The invasion of The Gordon Plains
« on: May 30, 2007, 10:28:00 AM »
Willis sat in the mud of his trench looking down into the rolling valley below. It was eight in the evening and already dark but his eyes had long since grown accustomed to the gloom. He looked round at his men in their own trenches spread along the hill, like the guide to some huge pair of shearers, ready to cut the landscape in two. His radio operator snoozed gently beside him. He picked up his rifle and peered through the CWS night sight into the valley not expecting to see much. He was right. Another boring night on the frontier. He jumped as his radio crackled into life. "Romeo25, Romeo25 this is Sunray, enemy on the border seen heading your way, Stand to arms and expect early contact, over!" There was nothing the radio operator could add as he opened his eyes with the flurry of movement from his commander. "Comrade Lieutenant, Whats happening?" He asked, but got a grunt as a reply, Willis stood up and shouted at the other men "STAND TO!!!". It was only seconds before the hill beside erupted into fire as the enemy's artillery covered their advance, he dropped into the trench, pulled the radio operator with him and hugged the floor as the high tonnage bombardment shredded those not quick enough to return to their trenches. It died down almost as quickly as it had begun, but Willis had to use all his muscles to force his nervous body up, he scanned the horizon with his CWS and saw them, an enemy approaching, but an enemy from where?......

Anyone else playing?

Suddenly the figures emerged from the morass of dark green that filled his scope, and he searched frantically for identifying marks on the uniform, but none were seen on him, or the hundreds of his companions that accompanied him
"Comrade Lieutenant!" Shouted the Radio operator "All positions requesting orders!"
"Tell them to wait..." Replied Willis "...until they get to the brook!" Indeed a shallow brook did cut a swath accross the valley from left to right, about two hundred yards from the tree-line, but easily enough distance for Willis's men to fire effectively. They waited nervously as the rumbling vehicles and tramping men approached. Still searching for an identifiable mark, but these men could be from anywhere. He waited and waited, and so did his men, it was customary for his troops to hold fire until the commander signalled the start of the fire-fight with a shot from his own individual weapon... He waited until he could distinguish the features of what looked like an enemy officers face... and slowly squeezed the trgger.

...It was if the Gates to the abyss had been opened and Lucifer had rised to play with them for the night, the outgoing fire was intense, the enemy ranks fell like swathes of corn under the sycle, men dropped never to move, and others dropped in agony, with only a cold night of pain and fear to look forwards to! They kept up a deliberate rate of fire, one shot every 6 seconds, most shot met their target, but the enemy was too many, and their artillery fire was too strong. Shells began raining on their trenches like a light rain, but still the fire was kept, he could hear his wounded comrades screaming over the radio, but he ignored it... when they got close, he scrambled from his trench and charged forwards screaming, his bayonet glinting with every muzzle flash that lit up the dark valley, many of his men followed, but many were cut down, he charged into one enemy, and thrust his bayonet deep into his stomach, then used his rifle to parry an attempt at him, he looked to left and right to try and survey the damage to his own force but was his on the cheek by the Butt of an AKM, he dropped to the floor.

...As he opened his eyes a burly hughe enemy Sergeant was stood above him, the firing had died down and to his dic-comfort he knew they had lost this phase... the Sergeant looked down at him.
"My name is Sergeant Viktor Dolminco from the army of......"

...But he never heard, because he's already passed out...
