Space Colonization - Vote
« on: February 10, 2007, 06:20:55 PM »
I voted for primitive space colony without mining because I consider it a compromise between my original suggestion and the suggestions during discussion.. I consider a primitive space colony post-modern, not future, tech.

My reasons:

NASA plans to do it by 2020, and they could by 2010 with better funding most likely.
It creates interesting RP.
Most scientists consider it an inevitable step in human progress.
It's not crazy, unimaginable, sci-fi tech.
Japan plans to do it by 2030.
The Russian Energia Corporation says they can do it by 2040.
It's not a huge leap to go from putting a man on the moon to making some buildings on it.

For now i have to vote no. Can i see schematics of how this thing is built? How does it work? Costs? How do you get it up there? Cite the statements you gave.

Unfortunately, there are no available images of space colony schematics, so I will detail how it will be built:

1. Several cargo craft are sent to Selene carrying:
a. A main hall
b. Three small experiment modules
c. Barracks.

All of them are made of prefabricated metal sides that are stacked upon each other for the trip there.

2. It is made for experiments and study of moon rocks.

3. The whole thing will cost about 75 billion Kolonialreich marks.

4. By using cargo ships such as the Ares III, and getting the crew there on an Ares IV and Orion CEV (NASA's successor to the space shuttle, which are going through large scale testing phases now)

5. I got all of those statements from Wikipedia, most of them from "Colonization of the Moon".

I'm still not sure if my vote counts anymore... BUT:
No space colonization, and allow futuristic tech here on Taijitu.
I don't think it'd be fair for some to have space accessibility and others not. It's kind of like one becoming Alvar Hanso. (Monopolist <_<)

I voted that a primitive colony be allowed.

But I'm not suggesting that I be the only one with space colonies, Tallmann. This was made to see if I would be allowed a space colony, and, by proxy, if others would too.

The fact is that, realistically, that would work. However, the completely unrealistic part would be the labor to put up the actual buildings, followed by the probability of failure (Which is high. If so much as ONE screw is loose, everyone is dead). Also, due to gravitation, the chance of a meteroite strike on your colony is extremely high, and the loss of life and materials p/capita would be devastating. Im sticking with no because it's far too risky to try at current tech levels, at least in High Evermore, and our economy is Strong.

Now, you've got a point about the screw. Yes, unless it is constructed extremely carefully, everyone is dead. However, I could also weld the sides together instead of screwing them together; it's more work in the short term, but you have no danger of welds getting loose. And actually, a meteorite hasn't hit the moon in quite some time, and the colony itself only stretches about five kilometers. The chance of a meteorite hitting it is worth the small risk; especially if it is constructed properly it is completely safe against micrometeorites and pebbles. The chance of a large, dangerous meteorite hitting it is quite low. This isn't to say it could never happen, but there's not a good chance it will.

In each case, I´m for it. I´m too for post-modern techs, as long they don´t give you a big advantage.

Erm...as I can remember, PAs were allowed for me and The Empire (King Rat), except for that I still use them in current times, but mine are not too strong and I have only ca. 100 of them....

Theres also one problem with welding. When you weld a metal together you need flux or else nitrogen and other gasses will get into the weld and cause it to become brittle and eventually shatter, and using flux in low gravity would be nearly impossibly (Flux is essentially sand). In an atmospheric condition such as that of a moon (Selene as well) the pressure on a weld could cause tremendous and explosive decompression if it shattered. Again, This time the explosive decompression would probably destroy over 80% of your colony due to shrapnel puncturing nearby buildings and the pressure of the oxygen being sucked into space would probably destroy (essentially it would be like turning on a vacuum next to a card house) anything directly next to it. IMO, the best plan is to spot weld it from the inside and use bolts on the outside. Takes more time and labor but it will make it work better :D

Ok, then I'll do that and adjust the cost to 50,000,500,000 KRM for the construction.

Wow, I thought most people would vote for the "primitive space colony" than any other selection.
