In orbit above the Kingdom of England & Wales

The low hum of the turning of the hab modules returned from being drowned out by the clicking of buttons as the final shakedown was completed. The ship was only 7 days away from the sail date of the original Mayflower, but anniversaries meant nothing in the military doctrine of space. The Juneflower was to undock from the Celestium Space Station in a mere 3 hours, after the final ship carrying the co-captains arrived. For right now, only one co-captain was in the bridge. He did not need to pilot the ship, but he knew he would need to get used to these controls. He would be behind them 8 hours a day until he retired at 68.

His name was Jack Zalman, and this was his dream. To pilot the Juneflower. Since he first caught a glimpse of the circular Hab Module A on his way to Armstrong Base on the Moon, he knew. "I want to fly that", he said to the flight attendant next to him. And now he was.

He ran his hand over the stainless steel panel casing, and moved his finger to the right on the volume touchscreen. "Astronomy Domine" was playing. It was nearly 150 years old, but the mission planners still chose it as the mission's anthem. Flying to stars, looking at the lime and limpid green of a planet in Epsilon Eridani. On one screen in the cockpit was the first picture glimpsed of the planet: A montage of a nearly white, bluish, one-pixel image of a moving planet. It was taken by the Hubble Space Telescope, the penultimate montage it ever photographed before it was brought back down and put into the Smithsonian. Onboard was a much more powerful one, which allowed the viewing of green splotches on the blue. But the clearer images it brought never meant as much as that first one. The first clear image of a planet with liquid water.

Frelav looked out the window. He never did much with his life when he was a kid, but now he was in space. He smiled as he looked at the landmasses under him. He looked around, seeing no one. He went back looking at the window, thinking about when he first signed up. He was a last minute addition, hired to provide security on board the ship in case something happens. He had nowhere else to really do in life, besides hang out at the local bar, and box and the local gym, and run his local business. When he heard there was a spot at the last minute for a security guard, he joined. Finished looking at the window, Frelav walked down to his bunk and layed down.

This is going to be a long trip....

OOC: Frelav is understating it. :P

IC:

Juneflower was now somewhere over Mongolia. The UN logo on the door split in two as the cockpit door opened and the last co-captain walked in. When Juneflower was being built, the UN's space program formed mid-21st century was controlling it. Of course, after the Great Oil Crisis of 2103 and the withdrawl of the United States, the Kingdom of England and Wales, Israel, the Kingdom of Scotland, and the Middle East, the UN collapsed from underfunding. No one ever bothered to paint over the logo.

"We in position, Zalman?"

"Yep, just finished turning maneuvers. We're now facing Eridani, and our thrusters are pointed to Earth."

"Good." said the co-captain, as the rest remained silent. This one was to be operating the main thrusters, Zalman was to operate the turning rockets, and the rest minor details to keep the ship running.

"Engagin' thrusters...We're at 3%. Velocity is 899.377 kilometers per second."

Faster than any spacecraft to date. But this was 3 percent of its full power. Earth was disappearing into the background faster than one's eyes could believe. But no Gs in space meant no one felt anything, and since the spacecraft was still going too slow for the stars to appear to move, the only indication of movement was the soft blowing sound of the engines inside the spacecraft. As the Juneflower left Earth gravity, its thrusters were raised to 100% of its full power. Then, after about one day at that speed and with 98% of fuel remaining, the rockets were killed, and the ship was now going 10% the speed of light. The co-captains entered the hab modules, with the spacecraft now under control of the on-board computer.

January 3, 2110

Instead of a crystal ball falling to mark the new year, a pock-marked piece of iron did.

That day, a small, golf-ball sized piece of interstellar debris slammed into the one of four massive windows on the Juneflower's Hab Module A. It left an enormous crack along the side of the window, causing explosive decompression in 5 cabins that the window bordered. Since all furniture was bolted down, it just caused a big mess in them from things falling, but it seemed like a bad omen. Yes, a minor one; the window was quickly fixed by handimen in space suits, but, it just seemed to foretell that maybe there would be more problems, that could shatter the community on board...or bring it closer together.

Tyber Zann was a husky man that enjoyed his life. When he was growing up he was the average joe kid. He never was stellar or bottom rate. He was very reliable. He was a man that when he gave his word he would keep it. He was also a man that had a sharp tongue. He was an excellent trader. He was very well known for his business. He was able to get great deals and then sell it for a large profit. After spending many years on the ground he realized that it was time to get up to space. He then heard about how the Juneflower was looking for a crew. He jumped at the idea immediately. He filled out the thorough application. His position on the ship was undecided. What he put down were just his traits to see what the Captain needed. He waited eagerly to see what he would get.

OOC: sorry for not posting in original ooc thing. can i still be in it though.

Frelav woke up after a few hours nap, and looked at his watch

I was asleep that long?

Frelav rose from his bunk, only to hit his head on the bunk on top of him.

"AH god, that hurts...ow"

Frelav shook it off and wen tout of the bunk room. He walked down to the cockpit area, and looked inside. Nobody was in there, so Frelav walked inside. He looked over the controls, and then found a manual on how to work them. Frelav sat in the co-pilots seat, and begin reading it.

Got to do something to pass the time

Peter surveyed the med lab.  Here he was supposed to monitor the entire crew.  He waited for the rest of the medical staff to arrive as he looked over his notes.  Captain Zalmann, he noted, seemed to be in the best shape of his life, hopefully Peter could keep him that way.  Then there was Frelav Yuroniov.  Frelav seemed to be in good shape, but it would take a few days to fully check him, and clear him for the work he planned to do.  Space travel was strenuous, and he wasn't adjusting to the cramped quarters like he should be.  Tyber Zann was also an odd case.  Tyber was one of the 12 men on board who hadn't been given a job.  He was suited for all kinds of things, and the medical staff could use someone like him.  Peter might just put in a request to have him put on the med staff...

"Please put these on. Please put these on. Please put these on."

That's all anyone in the corridors near the cabins could hear. "These" were typical nuclear-light goggles. The Juneflower was about to reach the termination shock, where the solar winds slowed to sub-sonic speeds and hot hydrogen would light up like a nuclear bomb when something passed through. The Juneflower would be fine, but not putting the goggles on could result in blindness. The voice of one of the co-captains, not Zalmann, came onto the intercom.

"Hitting termination shock in approximately 20 seconds, please put the goggles the flight attendants have given you on lest you become blind. Ten, niner, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one, ze-"

The zero was interrupted by the violent shaking of the ships sides. Even through the goggles, it was like looking into the sun for a fraction of a second. The shaking subsided, and the co-captain came on the intercom again.

"Congratulations, we just left the solar system. You're lucky, because you'll never feel that again."

Champagne bottles uncorked across the ship, and teetotalers would have to step over crew members to get to their beds that night.

Frelav knocked on the Med Bay door.

"Hey guys, um, you wanted to clear me for work, and i had to come to the med day so...here i am."

Frelav leaned on the wall, waiting for the Doctor to tell him what to do. Frelav was somewhat fit, after all, being in the marines for 3 years, boxing for most of your life and being in jail for a year gives you some muscle. but, the rules sated that he had to be cleared.

"Alright Mr. Yuroniov.  You look to be in good shape, but our reports have said that you're not adjusting to space travel that well.  Is that true?"

Aleksei Pavel slowly pushed open the door to the command module.

"Hey, you're not supposed to go in there between 9:00 and 10:00. That's when we're predicting our future course." said Zalman, coming up behind him.

Aleksei elbowed him in the stomach. Zalman fell to the ground, and Aleksei pulled out a small pistol, pointing it at the co-captain in charge of the main thrusters.

"You sleepin' with my wife, bastard?!"

"I don't know what you're talking about - OH MY GOD! WHERE'D YOU GET THAT?!" said the co-captain, spinning around. Three gun shots rang out before Zalman could restrain him. The co-captain stumbled back and fell onto the panels, blood staining his white lab coat. Zalman jumped up and took Aleksei by the arms, as the other co-captains restrained him. Zalman let them handle it and walked to the co-captain, feeling for a pulse. Nothing.

"He's dead." walking to the phone, Jack called the med bay. They would take the co-captain to the morgue. After about an hour, Aleksei was taken to the police, where he stole a gun. Tomorrow they would need to bring in one of the reserve co-captains.

Frelav heard several shots, and stood up.

Sh*t

It was his job to make sure nobody gets hurt, and from the shots, somebody did. He put his hands on his head. He failed.
