"Hey what th.."

The pirate went down. Everybody began running around, looking for cover. They fired at almost anything that moved, and every shadow. Yet, they still fought.

"Eat this, fucker!"

A pirate threw a pipe bomb into a squad, killing almost all of them. The man who was left looked around. He didnt look for long, before a round killed him.

"Come on, show these fucktards whats its like to mess with the Black Water boys!"

Machine gun fire then began pouring out of the windows into the paratroopers. The few RPG held there fire, in case of bigger threats. The pirates would heave pipe bombs, and, if that didn't work, they would just throw a Molotov and let them burn to death. But, the paratroopers manged to enter the outskrits of town. At least, before they were bunred to death by a trail of gasloine left behind.

"Ha ha! look! Thoese fuckers are heading back!"

"Thats shows them right!"

The pirates cheered, but they knew they will come back. they knew.

The paratroopers dropped in a mile behind the village, actually.  Yes, I know I didn't write that, but I never did say where the paratroopers were landing...and the point was to get them behind your lines, not on top of them.  I haven't sent in marines.  I'm pounding you with cannons from my corvettes, starting at the shore and moving up (making sure not to hit the paratroopers coming in from behind).  And I've got hundreds upon hundreds of marines ready for when I do send them in, so I doubt one pipe bomb would send them scurrying for cover.

In light of increase worries from our government regarding the rampart crime elements in your country, we are requesting that or two nations set up a joint cooperative provision to neutralize these ruffians. We will support your government with our military and State Police as needed. We look forward to your reply.

OOC: Okay, fair enough, but you've still ignored the fact that your pirates will have seen a solid five minutes at least of off-shore cannon fire before any enemy troops arrive.  And your boats will be the first things to go.

Eko stared out into the dark sky, watching as the village burned in a hazy glow of flames. The smell of burnt wood and roof tiles drifted into his nostril, a smell that he mostly saw in the raids of the free towns. But never in Drella...

"Captain, what do we do!" screams out a panic crewman. "Our cocaine stash is in that village, how will we get it?"
"Nothing, we can do nothing against the new Navy!" he replied. "All we can do is run and hope to fight another day."

Eko walked to the bow of his 25 meter former crab boat, the Exile. On each side of the dirty wooden deck was a pair of 60mm swivel guns. Eko ordered a couple of men to load one of them as he passed. "Get this one armed right away, if the Cunters come, we'll need to fight for our lives."

At the bow of the ship, inside the small cramped cockpit, he started up the engine, check a map chart taped to the frontal glass. With the villages being taken by the Navy, the only place to go was Ambergris Cove, a small sea inlet with a hidden cavern where the old buccaneers use to hideout in.  Even today, it was a secret refuge for most of the area's experienced pirates to keep their money and valuables in. The respected Old Keeper watched over the place, keeping it well stock with donated supplies and equipment to repair ships. It was probably the only stable element of order in their world, meager and archaic as it seems by Eko's standards.

Eko's first mate, Valian, entered the cockpit with a AK-47 slung onto his right shoulder.
"Where are we going?" he asked impatiently.
"To Ambergris, getting out of here before those corvettes we heard about sees us. The draft of the cove should keep them out of our way until we can formulate a plan against these Cunters."
"Formulate? With who? You expect the gangs to bind together for this crisis? If they can get over their problem with each other!"
Eko gave a annoyed look. "I know I haven't been in the business for long, but I know from experience that ruffians will join together once something bugs them enough. The only chance we got against the mainlanders is to unify."
Valian gave out a sigh. "UNIFY? What civy bullshit! We should just leave for the Continent, we be out of the Navy's reach and free to continue our business! Why do you worry about the others so much? They are self-center people like me and you, there is no such thing as a "Pirate Nation" Eko. Get that through your head, and throw away all that bullshit you got from home."

Valian exited the cockpit without a word, leaving Eko alone and grieving again about home...his former home. He hated when people reminded him of his past. But Valian was right, he couldn't put his past away...he couldn't let go of Loyan. Deep inside of him, he wanted the Islands to be like Loyan, with government, honest working men, and roads. But that was impossible, he can't just take this place and turn it to Loyan. And Loyan...that was a place he could never return to...better to heed with Valian's suggestion and bury his past. He was a pirate now, a man without deed or loyalties, a criminal who stole and pillaged.

"Accept it..." Eko whispered into the air. He pushed the throttle, accelerating the Exile to a decent speed against the wind. Above them, sky began swelling with storm clouds. Rain and gale, that will be a blessing for a change...

Kuandu rushed forward into the fray, diving for cover.  The chaos had already begun by the time he'd gotten there.  He was a part of the second wave.  The first had swarmed into the city and surrounded all exits in just a little more than an hour.  They had been stopped short by the barricades.  The second wave hit just minutes after Seth made his offer; total amnesty for any pirate willing to join the ranks of the Cantrian army.  Five minutes after the initial offer, which the pirates had ignored most likely because they'd be shot in the back on their way over, the second wave arrived and continued the attack.  Now they were working on finding or making ways around the barricades, crashing through the flimsy slums to make new alleyways around them.  This was where the real war was.  In these tight quarters, Kuandu could lob a grenade and could guarantee that at least four people would be killed.  The only problem was that the Cantrians and the pirates were so close together it was impossible to hit one side without hitting the other.
Kuandu fired his assault rifle relentlessly into a pirate attempting to run for cover, lobbed a grenade over the heads of the pirates, hoping another squad of Cantrians didn't end up getting hit, and ducked back behind the rubble he had been using for cover.  A grenade from the pirates landed three feet from him.  He ran from his cover and hit the ground as the grenade went off.  Bullets flew over his head.  He had no cover!  He crawled behind a collapsed slum and lay as flat as he could.  The slum barely shielded him while he was lying on his back.  He either had to remain prone or else risk being shot while trying to find more cover...He chose to remain prone, and lobbed another grenade towards the pirates, hoping that they could push them back and then he'd be able to find real cover.  This was a war, now.  No more shocked, scared, and surprised pirates being decimated in advance by off-shore bombardment.  I'd better not die in this war after surviving the last one. Kuandu thought.

(OOC: Barakarin, do you plan on posting a legitimate response to my attack?  Your last one ignored completely the fact that I've been shooting at you from offshore for a while prior to beginning the actual attack.)

(click to show/hide)

"Captain, we're hitting low shoals! Four meters to the seabed and rising!" yelled out a crewman as he heaved the heavy lead sounder out from the water. The ship had slowed to two knots as they neared their destination. On their starboard, the cliffs of Ambergris Cove can be seen in the distance, storm wash splashing onto their red rock face.

A big wave hits the side of the ship and everyone on board loses their step as the Exile rocked violently. "Sea's getting pretty rough Captain!" a crewman yelled out. "It's not safe to navigate through the cove in this storm! We'll strike a shoal and sink!"

"I appreciate your advisory Jackson, but we'll die at the hands of this storm if we don't find shelter!" Eko screamed back. As the wind began to pick up in speed and ferocity, it became difficult to hear. Soon, the rain began to pour in plum size droplets. "Everyone below deck. now!" yelled out Valian.

While the crew hurried through the hatch to the bottom deck, Eko struggled to get back to his cockpit to steer the boat. The waves came increasingly violent, splashing sea foam and wash against the glass of the cockpit. Eko took control of the steering wheel and pushed the throttle. He scanned the map chart on the glass, attempting to get his bearings. The Exile rolled in every direction as the wind and waves thrash against it. Sea sickness soon took Eko.

Keep it together...23 degrees....3 meter draught here in...dammit! Where am I?"

Visibility was completely erased by the hail of rain and waves. There was little light with the sun blocked out by the storm, all Eko could see was a murky horizon and a haze of darkness through the wet glass. He might as well be half blind, getting into the cove was hard enough for him without a storm rocking him and his boat like a baby rattle. A sense of utter panic took Eko.

"Pull yourself together...it's just like driving the old car...nothing to it but steering and throttle...yeah..."

He will have to go through with by pure instinct, instinct he wasn't sure he had. He rotated the wheel at random, hoping to visualize the shoals as he comes across them. The boat made progress, and the waves began to lessen the further he got within the cove inlet. Eko held his breath as the Exile passed within the wind barrier of the cliffs. The wind began to die slowly, but the boat continue to tumble in the waves.

The Exile zig-zag two hundred meters into the cove, and Eko eased on the steering. He searched for landmarks. He sighted a familiar tower of rock sticking out from the water; Ambergris Tower. Eko checked his chart against the bearing of the Ambergris Tower.

"Tower...shoals...got it!....Two meter draught...two point five...three meters is...here!"

To get into the cave, Eko will have to snake through several narrow areas of deeper shoals. It was a twisting maze that called for no mistakes and a single meter off can result in a puncture hull...Perhaps the weather wasn't such a blessing after all.

"Slight left...a little right...hard left!....nice and easy through here...left! left!....ease on the throttle..."

A huge freak wave came up from portside, rocketing the boat to its right and towards a shallow layer of shoals. Eko leans hard on the steering wheel to compensate...but it was too late. The sound of steel grinding against rock resonated through the boat, follow by a low metallic pop.

"FUCK!" he screamed out. Eko turns the wheel with all his might, barely saving his boat from getting stuck onto the shoal. From below him, screams of his crew could be heard. He realized right away that the hit with the shoal had ripped a leak. No doubt they were taking water...

Suddenly, a white light sparked out form the darkness of the rain. It held still despite the turbulent wind outside, which meant only one thing. It was coming from the cave! With new rigour, Eko continued to guide his sinking boat through the passage.

"Just a little more....a little more...easy...easy...."

The beam of a floodlight shot through the glass, blinding Eko for a moment. Within a few minutes, the Exile drifted into the large cavern of Ambergris Cove. On the catwalks of the cavern walls, men scurried about. Eko heard the sound of grappling hooks hitting his deck. He walks outside to see himself being surrounded by dirty looking men. The smell of tobacco and rum stained the air. A familiar voice spoke out from the crowd, calling for Eko.

"Eko! you crazy Bastard!"
"Wayne? Am I glad to see you..."

The fire was growing louder and louder. More and More pirates were getting killed, and they were being pushed back. The few RPG-7s that had ammo left begin to set up near a old car, ready to attack the outsiders. Well, at least try. The Pirates Ak-47's were firing wildly, just trying to stop the Incoming soldiers. Some pirates were lucky, and found a good shooting postion. Others, they were being cut down. the drugs were starting to fail them. They began to run as fast as they could to the better defended area. As when they were fighting, they were getting cut down. There was ntohing they could do for the sying expect give them some weed, and leave them. Some of the Underbosses tried to get there men to stay and fight, but, it wouldnt work. They ran, hoping, they would be safe from the bullets. But, they werent. Yet.

Seth had put up his headquarters in one of the inland villages that had been rapidly occupied on the way to Drella.  Several miles inland, the village was tiny, maybe twenty buildings.  Fortunately, it hadn't been occupied by any militants.  As planned, the second wave had arrived and, through strength of numbers, superior tactics and training, and a massive advantage in equipment, begun slowly claiming ground in the massive slums of the city.  And in a few days, when the artillery shells and missiles from A-10s started raining down on them, the pirates would surely reconsider his offer.  Given a choice between the army and death, who would choose death?

Kuandu turned the barrel of the heavy machine gun towards the oncoming pirates and opened fire.  He didn't know how so many of them had gotten together in one spot, but he guessed it was some kind of regrouping checkpoint.  Moments after he unleashed his hail of bullets, a rocket-propelled grenade shrieked out from the other side of the street, crashing into the midst of the pirates.  The pirates fled from the fire of the M60, diving for cover behind the barricade which, ten seconds ago, they had abandoned in favor of their bold but idiotic charge.  Kuandu followed them back to their hiding spots, killing as many as he could.  Another RPG flew into a slum building with a solid half-dozen pirates hiding in it.  The building went up in flames, as did the pirates.  Several of them fled into the street, some burning, some not.  Kuandu began shooting down the ones not on fire.

All the living pirates were now behind the barricade.  Xien appeared at Kuandus side as he began taking more careful shots at the pirates who were sticking heads and limbs out of their hiding spots to return fire.  "Kuandu, we're leaving!" he shouted over the din of the machine gun, the assault rifles, and the grenades.

"We can't let the pirates take this alley!"  Kuandu shouted back.

"Two squads of marines just got here and entrenched themselves!  They'll hold the street, we're going to find a way around that barricade!"  Kuandu nodded, then beckoned for Daoxin, about five feet in front of him.  Daoxin ran back to where Kuandu was hiding.

"It's time to go!" Kuandu said.  Kuandu picked up the gun and slung it over his shoulder next to his AK-47.  The two of them began a careful retreat down the street, constantly running between one point of cover and the next to avoid the constant hail of bullets and the pirates' RPG-7s until, about two minutes later, they were a hundred feet down the street with the rest of their squad.  "Where's Mei and Hanshu?" Kuandu asked.

"They were taken out by an RPG on the way here." Sakura responded.  She was one of the few women in the Cantrian army.  Unlike men, women were not required to serve a year in the army, and generally there were not very many volunteers among them.  Sakura was an exception.

"Where's the alternate route going to be?" Yuan asked.  He was the second in command of the squad.

"Down that alley," Xien responded, "And through two or three slum buildings.  We should come out about twenty feet behind the barricades.  Let's go!"  The squad headed down the alley.  They and another squad of paratroopers had cleared it a half-hour ago, only to find it was a deadend.  Perhaps the fight for it wasn't in vain after all.  The squad rushed down the alley and began crashing through the slums.  They'd bash down a wall, take cover, check the other side for pirates through all the chinks in the shoddily built structures, and then, finding it clear, they'd crash through the wall again.  Then, with just one wall between them and clear space, they heard voices on the other said.

"What was that?"

"Just one of these godforsaken slums falling in on itself, what'd you expect from a warzone?"

"No, there's someone in there, I know it!"  The squad found cover.  A burst of AK-47 fire filled the slum.

"There, you happy?  Whatever was in there, they're dead now.  Can we kill the real Imperials now?"  Xien gave a signal.  As one, the six remaining members of the squad layed into the enemy with their AK-47s.  It's a pity, Kuandu thought, With the wall of the slum in the way, we can't see the looks on their faces.  The slum wall collapsed; the pirates who hadn't been shot had already found cover.  There weren't very many, and they were all in the bar.  Now that Kuandu could see outside the slums, he could see that they'd made a couldesac around a bar.  To the left of the squad was the barricade they'd been going around.  The squad moved ahead, while Kuandu and Daoxin stayed behind, Kuandu setting up the machine gun while Daoxin pulled the remains of the slums together to make some cover.  The squad found some cover behind some small barricades the dead pirates had been hiding behind.  The barricades were facing the street.  Apparently, the pirates hadn't been expecting an attack from the slums.

Kuandu opened fire on the bar.  The windows shattered, splaying glass out on the floor inside.  The walls were thin, and the bullets from the machine gun ripped through them like cardboard.  The pirates tipped over tables inside and, using them as cover, returned fire.  Sakura began sniping out the pirates from the cover of her barricade.  The pirates hurled a molotov cocktail through the window and consumed one of the barricades in fire.  Yentei, the medic, ran from it screaming and was quickly gunned down by the vengeful pirates.  Kuandu continued spraying them with his machine gun, moving it back and forth.  Stray bullets struck bottles of vodka at the bar behind the pirates, creating a tiny fireball which immediately burned out, sometimes leaving the glass remnants of the bottle burning.  The bar seemed unusually heavily fortified...and the number of pirates behind it seemed to be growing.  But Kuandu could tell there wasn't enough room for a back door.  Where were the pirates coming from?

The few pirates still alive in front of the bar moved behind it, and Xien, Yuan, and Sakura moved into the building, taking cover behind the tables that, moments before, had been sheltering the pirates.  Kuandu grabbed the machine gun and rushed forward with it, Daoxin right behind him.  Kuandu set up the machine gun behind one of the barricades while Daoxin rushed ahead to join his comrades.  Xien tossed a grenade inside the bar.  The pirates rushed out, straight into Kuandu's machine gun.  The pirates were scattered all either killed or wounded.  The squad rushed behind the bar and began firing downward.  The pirates had been coming up through a trapdoor!

Kuandu checked his left, in the direction of the street.  The pirates at the barricade about five hundred feet from him were mostly dead or wounded, and apparently hadn't noticed the battle in the bar.  He started pouring bullets into them.  It took them a few seconds to figure out where the enemy fire was coming from, but one of them located Kuandu and pointed.  Fortunately, the barricade Kuandu was hiding behind had been placed specifically to protect against an attack from the direction of the barricade.  Unfortunately, it wasn't capable of protecting him from rocket propelled grenades, one of which passed barely a foot over his head as he ducked behind the barricade.  Kuandu poked his eyes back above the barricade and shot down the pirate holding the RPG before he could fire again.  Kuandu grabbed his machine gun and sprinted into the building.  He set up the machine gun again in the window of the bar, and began firing into the pirates.  They found cover and returned fire, but didn't charge him.  Behind them Kuandu could see the marines making an attack in the rear, a good deal more than the two squads they'd originally left there.

Suddenly, Kuandu's back was hit by a wave of heat.  One of the pirates in the tunnel below the bar had tossed a match up.  In the crossfire, the bar floor had been covered with vodka from shattered bottles.  The fire only lasted a split second, but it covered the entire area behind the bar.  The squad leaped out from behind it, using their arms to protect their faces from the intense heat.  Daoxins uniform caught on fire, and he dropped to the ground and began rolling to put it out.  Fortunately, the bar was between him and the pirates, otherwords he would've been filled with holes.

Sakura and Yuan both tossed grenades towards the bar.

The marines had overtaken the barricade.  The pirates had laid down their weapons.  Kuandu rushed over to the bar.  The pirates weren't shooting anymore.  Daoxin didn't look like he was burned, just his uniform.  The five of them hopped over the bar and stared down into the pit.  There appeared to be some lights down there, but a few gun shots were heard from the depths of the tunnel and they went off.  The pit looked even less inviting now that it was a seemingly black abyss.  "Okay," Xien asked, "Any volunteers?"  No one stepped forward.  "Alright then.  Kuandu, you go first."  I get the feeling Xien doesn't like me. Kuandu thought just before he jumped in.

Eko sipped on the rusty mug of coffee. He flinched a bit from the heavy taste. He was use to drinking fine tea, not this shit water of foreigners. He turned to a hole in the cave room. Looking down, he saw workers of Ambergris welding in the hole in the Exile.

"She'll be finish by the hour," remarked Wayne." That was a big leak you cracked, Ten more minutes and you would had hit the shoal and gotten stuck. Won't that been a pretty story?"

"Thanks for the refit, I'll make it up to you with my next catch. You still take lobsters right?"

Wayne chuckled heartily. "Don't think your gonna make much of a catch these days in these waters my old friend...Not with the Cantrian Navy in strength. I got word of the attacks by the government, looks like us pirates are in a pinch."

Wayne smartly grinned. Eko grinned back.

For the last five years of his exile, Wayne was the only person on a island of con-men and cutthroats that he could trust sincerely. Ever since they met and escaped together from the White Crab Gang, they became true friends in a business where trust and honesty were scarcer than gold and diamonds.

"Don't worry about the bill, the Old Keeper likes you, he's not gonna ask your to pay for some minor emergency repairs."

Eko grinned. "That's good to hear....so, does the Old Keeper have anything to say about this mess?"

"Nothing much. The Ambergris crew are gonna stay here for a few more weeks, wait for survivors to come pick up their deposits. Ambergris is a tight spot, should hold up to any Navy assault. Then, me and the Keeper are gonna head for the Odori Islands...maybe turn civy and open a store. Anything really, just need to get away from that blasted new Navy."

Eko frowned. "...Your not gonna stay and fight?"

"Fight? Fight for what, a island of shit hole towns and a few bar wenches? Hah!"

"But this..this is your home..."

"A ship is a pirate's home, not some worthless stretch of ground. This isn't Loyan my friend, it's a shit hole. We can find more shit holes elsewhere. What am I saying...your a land lubber...you won't understand the idea of a floating home."

"I guess I don't...." Eko dropped the mug on the table, and headed out the room. Wayne followed behind.

"So Wayne, you got anymore of those 60s?"
"What?"
"The small shells..."
"Oh those, you got to stop using Arm'y lingo."
"Sorry, habit. Do you have any?"
"We're out of the small ones, but I got twenty cases of RPGs."
"What kind?"
"How am I suppose to know! I wasn't in your army!"
"You're a pirate, you should know your weapons and munition..."
"Bloody fuck I should..."

The two skipped down the catwalk and stepped onto the dock, a flatten surface of rock overhang beside the water. Beside the dock was the Exile, it's hull sitting on a slope of wet sand and sludge where it was pulled up onto. Wayne walked up to a worker that was finishing up repair with his acetylene torch.

"Hows the repairs going John?"

"We're done..." John took off his shade googles and switched off the torch. "Took us hours looking for piece of scrap to fit the rip, but she'll mend nicely."

Eko nodded politely to John. "Thanks mate."

"No problem. Now if you excuse me, I got two more ships to repair. Both came in the initial attacks, hull fucking ripped in big holes and burnt marks."

"How big are the holes?"

"Uhh.....the size of your fist? Fucking nasty, heard an old chap got hit in the arms. Blew his whole lugger off."

"30mm explosive rounds...." Eko murmured.

"Where did the Navy get that? Ten months ago, they were still shooting us with pep neck rifles," blurted Wayne.

John answered, "Rumors be that the government is buying weapons from the mainlanders. Not just guns, big rockets too. Any pirate caught in a fight with the Navy will get a nasty thrashing, believe me. It's not like old times anymore..."

"No it isn't."

Morning broke, and the cave was bathed with the warm light of sunrise. Night watchmen came back in for rest and the morning shift rowed out into the cove in their cutters. From the distance, one could see countless dots of boats heading for the cave. No doubt, they were the lucky few that managed to escape the Navy. Above, the storm from last night had mostly clear, and it was gonna be clear day ahead.

After the first fire fight in the tunnels, which had lasted about two minutes before the pirates ran away, Kuandu and his squadmates didn't encounter any resistance.  Every few minutes they'd come across an exit to the surface.  They'd check for pirates and then, if they found some, they'd usually just chuck a grenade or two up there and then wait for them to come down into the sights of their AK-47s and the M60.  Sometimes they came down and were massacred.  Sometimes they were smart enough to stay up top.  They'd wait a few minutes after the last shot was fired and then they'd move on.  There weren't many pirates down in the tunnels, which surprised Kuandu.  Apparently they were all up top, either fighting the Cantrians or running from them.
After the first two or three hours in the tunnel, they heard the boom and felt the shake that meant the artillery had arrived, and started moving faster, hoping to get out of the are being bombarded before the tunnels collapsed.  Sometimes the tunnel collapsed behind them, blocking their exit, and sometimes it collapsed in front of them, forcing them to turn back and look for another route.  After another hour of navigating the labyrinth, they found a door at the end of a tunnel.  It looked like the entrance to a bunker of some kind.
Yuan stepped forward to open it.  Kuandu positioned the M60 to obliterate any hostiles inside.  The rest of the squad readied their AK-47s and found what cover they could in the barren tunnel.  Yuan had a grenade ready.
Yuan opened the door.  Kuandu opened fire.  Another machine gun turned its barrel from a door on the opposite side of the room and began firing back.  The squad opened fire, Yuan tossed his grenade in the direction of the machine gun nest, and then pulled out his AK-47, using the door as cover.  The guard was light and hadn't been expecting an attack from the tunnel.  The battle was over in a few minutes.
The squad stepped into the room.  It was a cellar, with stairs leading up to the surface.  Shelves of wine lined the walls and created corridors in the cellar.  Some pirates had heard the noise of the gun fight and were coming to investigate.  The squad took cover behind the wine shelves and got ready for another fight.  The pirates came in, just two at first, but after they were immediately gunned down, more came.  Before half the pirates had been able to enter the cellar, the building they were coming from was demolished by a bomb from one of the A-10s passing overhead.  A portion of the cellar collapsed.  The pirates were gunned down before they could recover from the shell shock.
Kuandu and his squad emerged in the remains of one of the manors that housed the wealthy Pirate Lords.  They were somewhere in the center of the city, then.  And the third wave had arrived, in force.  Drella wouldn't last long.
