two weeks later
Hida Reyon and his sister Victan were walking on the many busy streets of downtown Na Sui. Today, they were taking a well deserved leisure day in the rowdy metropolis after exams; doing some shopping and meeting up with some friends. Victan insisted on walking around with their hands held, and Hida could do nothing but agree. While they were all in their late teens, Hida didn't mind sparing some dignity for his sister.
"Hida, the new Elimia album just came out! After lunch, let's go pick up a copy!" said Victan excitedly. Hida shoke his head and grin. "We got forty dollars from dad and mom to spend, I'm not blowing half of it on some coarse voiced singer with no talent."
"You take that back!" Elimia burst out, nearly pushing his startled brother into traffic. "Wo! Alright, we'll get it, no need to kill me over it..." Hida said after recovering. "Heaven, you can't treat your older brother like, I might sell you to a old man for it." Victan stuck out her tongue. They both laughed out.
Suddenly a voice calls out to them. "You two are looking jolly, as expected from Yui Lan High's #1 Super-Siblings." A short boy in a blue stripe shirt and baggy pants walked out in front of them and gave the two a over-the-top smile.
"Saji! When did you come back from training? You left right after exams!" Hida exclaimed, then gave Saji a friendly push to the shoulder. Victan gave Saji a tight hug, nearly choking the stick-thin sixteen year old.
"Ah, Victan! You're ruining my hair!"
"Heh, sorry!" Victan pranced behind his brother and giggled. Saji fixed up his gray slicky hairdo and answered, "Militia training was canceled, for me at least. The older recruits went for jungle training in Vai Shan. Us 18-belows couldn't go...most of us didn't seem to mind."
"I can tell why," Hida chuckled out. "Me and Vick are going for lunch at the Apple House, you in?"
"Sure, not that I got anything better to do." Saji replied.
The three chatted and laughed as they made their way down 49th Main Street. It was the afternoon, and the whole street was packed with office workers and weekend shoppers making their way to the Peach Orchard District; where Na Sui City's largest restaurants and food courts were located. The smell of food soon revealed itself as they crossed the last intersection to the Apple House, a fast food joint at the edge of Peach Orchard's main square. It was already packed, but the waitress managed to find a table at the back corner of restaurant. The trio sat down and placed their orders.
"A pinaka salad for me please," said Victan.
"Salad again?" Hadi remarked.
"I need to watch my weight!"
Hadi shoke his head in disapproval. "A sixteen year old shouldn't be on a diet; she'll have a Songhai Fillet with wedges instead."
"Brother!"
"Listen to your brother," Saji added. "No man likes a girl without some meat on her body, parts of it at least."
"Saji, make another joke like that and you're getting a beat down..."
"Haha, i was joking around...right Victan?"
"I want a salad!"
"Ah, alright...get her ~"
A loud hissing interrupted them. The other patrons noticed as well, and searched for the source of the noise. "What was that?" said Saji. Victan replied, "I don't know, a giant pop bottle being open?"
The waitress was clueless as well. "Please excuse me, I'll check with the manager about the noise," she said. "Please wait here, I'll be back soon to take your order!" She gave a quick smile and took off.
"I don't like this, something is wrong..." said Saji as he got up from his seat and began sniffing the area. Within seconds, he broke down on his knee and clasped his mouth and nose. "Ah, what's that smell! It's burning my lungs..." he murmured out. Soon enough, the other patrons noticed the smell as well and clasped face. Saji struggled up, Hadi ran over to help his friend up. "Saji! What's wrong!" His friend panted and began breathing heavily.
"It's......it's gas! Don't breath it in! Hadi....acchh!!" Saji clasped his chest, wincing in pain. Utter confusion ran through Hadi's mind. What the hell was going on? Moments later, the other patrons began to feel the effects of the gas as well. The air they breathed in began to inflame their nostrils and burn into their lungs. Hadi gasped as he was hit by the effects, pulling his shirt over his nose to escape the gas. Panic struck him, he wheeled around to check on his sister.
Victan was coughing heavily, her cheeks and face deep red. Her fingers clenched tight on her shirt, her eyes wide as she struggled to breath.
"Victan!" Hadi yelled out. He rushed to his sister's side. "Brother!...acch!" she gasped out. She tipped over on her seat, Hadi barely managed to catch her before she fell off.
"Hang in there...ach...I'll get you out of here!" He struggled to get her sister up on his shoulders. The effect of the gas was getting to him as well, the burning in his lungs increased gradually. With a dying Victan on his back, he grunted forward towards the exit, coughing regularly as the burning soon got to his brain. The manager, who had also realize the gas, held the door open while covering his mouth with a paper napkin. "Get her out of here! Call the police! Get some help!"
Hadi fell on the sidewalk, the weight of Victan's body over him. Onlookers looked in shock, stopping to help. A lady in office blouse came over and rolled a sub-conscious Victan off his back. "Oh Heaven! What happened here?" she asked out. Hadi coughed, "..Gas...ack...gas attack...ach..ach."
Lady gasped in terror. She took a look at Victan and realize the reality of the situation. "Hang in there kid. Someone call emergency! There's been a gas attack!" Without a moment to lose, the lady turned Victan on her back and began performing CPR. Hadi watched in horror as Victan's eyes began to close. He could hear her breathing get softer and weaker...despite the attempts of the lady. Hadi struggled up on his knee, the pain in his lungs still present. Taking a deep breath of fresh air, he moved over to his dying sister.
"Victan! Open your eyes! It's me!"
"Stand back kid!"
"Victan! Wake up!....Wake up!!!" he screamed out. Tears flooded out from his eyes, dripping onto Victan's now pale face.
The lady pushed him aside, and he fell flat on the sidewalk pavement. "Stay where you are!" the lady screamed out. She went back to resuscitating a lifeless Victan, her eyes drenched with tears as well. Hadi recovered from the push and watched the lady's unsuccessful attempts, breaking into uncontrollable crying as he realized his baby sister was dying in front of him.
In the corner of his eyes, he saw passersby rushing into the Apple House to carry gassed patrons out from the death zone inside. He saw one of them carry out a stubby boy with blood botched on his blue shirt, laying the limp body on the sidewalk. He recognized the boy...it was Saji. The lips of his mouth were dripping with blood, his eyes stared lifelessly up to the clear sky.
In the background of cries and yells from hysteric rescuers and conscious victims, the siren of emergency vehicles rang out over the Peach Orchard. In the distance, more screams and yells came from the other corners of the district. The entire place had transformed into a disaster zone....
