Integrating Donaubund into Taijitu!
« on: April 02, 2015, 12:35:07 PM »
Hello! So, I've thrown together this here as a rough start for integrating the Donaubund into Taijitu. I have carefully tried to avoid anything that steps on toes/dips too deeply into the shared universe here, not because I don't want to - but because I want your feedback! Specifically, Donaubund is very diverse, and I have the following questions:

  • Where on Taijitu would I want to put an 'old world' nation that has been having severe trouble modernizing, despite a largely hopeful political clime? It's somewhat isolated by mountains and a very, very ominous forest to the SW; land borders would mostly be in the SE, where the terrain gives way to plains and floodplains. I also ask because...
  • Which established cultures, languages, and religions would I then be bordering? Due to the way things work in Donaubund, this is a very important question - I imagine there would be migration of at least a noticeable sort, and as such imagine that at least one or two cultures would be amongst the Protect Language scheme the country has.
  • I basically just used the templates I saw around the wiki; I know, it doesn't look very pretty, aha. Any feedback on how to format things better, would much appreciated. I want to make the Donaubund Tourist Centre a place so pretty you'll want to visit, of course!  ;D
  • How would I go about creating a 'navbox'? Since I think for religion, language, other nerdy things etc it would be best to have separate pages. Yeah?

Thanks, and I'm really excited about this - so much so that uh, I should be... Getting to sleep, criminy...

First of all, welcome to Taijitu!

I don't know much about where mountains or plains speciifcally are - that's more St Oz's realm, as he's the cartographer - but I can briefly give you an overview of some temperate areas and their cultures.

Phoenixia, in the southwest, has the countries of New Delfos and La Llanura Libre. Delfos is somewhat Old World in flavor but he'd be able to tell you more about his nation specifically. La Llanura Libre is somewhat Latin American inspired; it's a former Myrorian colony that waged a war of independence. Again, he'd be able to tell you more but from what I've gathered it's a mostly-democratic nation in modern times with some corruption problems.

Northern Cefnor, near the middle of the map, is the other major active temperate area. Cefnor is the enormous gulf surrounded on nearly all sides by land. Starting at the top and going clockwise:

Rykkovaa is a fascist dictatorship that's rather Soviet Bloc - not communist, but not 'what if Nazi Germany won the war' either. Corruption and state bureaucracy is the norm. It's very cold, mostly in the Arctic Circle, and characterized by fjords and taiga in the south and tundra in the north.

Myroria is an elective monarchy characterized by bitter, partisan politics and large expanses of rural taiga. In modern times it transitions mostly-peacefully to a democratic constitutional monarchy. It has close ties to Letonna and Eluvatar. It's developed along the coasts, but the rural interior suffers from a crippling lack of infrastructure and a constantly-flowing brain drain.

Letonna is an absolute monarchy characterized by bureaucracy and a government that brutally stamps out any opposition - especially from minorities. In modern times, it too begins to transition to democracy, trying to come to terms with its history at the same time. Its large nation has a variety of climates, changing from taiga and steppe as you move south to more temperate climes.

Bustos is a nation run as a megacorporation ruled by the Bustos family. Essentially feudalistic, the incredibly wealthy Bustos family owns all land in the country and rents it out to the highest bidder. As far as I know, its climate is pretty temperate.

St. Oz is a communist theocracy that's the world's only matriarchy. Much like women in most other nations before the 1960s-80s, men in Ozia are second class citizens and don't have the right to vote until the 1970s. It functions mostly as a republic, but is a single-party state I think. In modern times, its economic strength makes it similar to China. The north of Ozia and its border with Myroria is very mountainous. The rest of its climate is somewhat of a mystery to me, but if I had to guess I'd say the southwestern coast is Mediterranean.

Eluvatar is a constitutional monarchy sans monarch. Its king disappeared in the 1700s and since then a complex legal fiction arose to justify his lack of successor because reasons. It has close ties with Rykkovaa and Myroria. It's democratic and pretty much a modern Western country. Due to its size, Eluvatar's climate ranges widely as well from the south to the north.

I skipped some inactive nations scattered along the same area there. If I had to guess, I'd say south of Oz might be your best bet. Or maybe ask Oz to replace Slavnayaboda with your nation, as they haven't been active in a while. Phoenixia might also be a good choice - maybe near Delfos, between it and La Llanura Libre.

"I assure you -- I will be quite content to be a mere mortal again, dedicated to my own amusements."

This is map of the outdated (yet still relevant) taijitu climate map with places that have the characteristics you're asking for

http://forum.taijitu.org/planning-room/official-map-thread-(request-thread-and-rules)/ Then here's the link to the map thread with links to the map and other relevant guidelines.

The place most geographically like what you're describing is that northwestern tip here, but it sounds like you asked to be around some cultures. I have to remove Elara/Zimmerwald so their territory is up for grabs, but being next to eluvatar is being next to a first world state. Contrarily, if you're next to St. Oz/Letonna/Bustos, that's more of a modernizing world-type of place, at least for St. Oz.

As for the other places, they're all circled off, but otherwise isolated out there, unless that's what you're looking for :D.

First of all nice Wiki and well thought out nation. Nice to have a less than completely literate nation among us :D (seriously). Now for the questions.
  • I believe Oz has given a far greater answer to this than I could have.
  • This will be entirely dependant on where you choose to be on the Map.
  • I can definitely help with wiki coding, anything you wish it to do in particular? Though this is best worked at while we are both online at the same time and chatting in real time. We often collaborate on this sort of thing in the IRC.
  • I can create the template for you if you wish so that you may edit it at a later date.
Any other questions feel free to ask me or any of our Citizen-Guides.

Just wanted to say welcome.   :drunks:

Perhaps a link to your wiki?  I like reading nations' FBs.

Wow - so much fantastic response. I'm going to try to get to all of this before I finish up, if I don't respond to you entirely; know I'll be back later to discuss things further.

- Myroria:

Thank you for the warm welcome and the information! You've really just made me want to go on a greater look in the wiki, as everything sounds pretty fascinating. Also - any time I hear a phrase like '...had to create a complex legal fiction 'because reasons' I know I'm in the right place! I can provide more details later - but you've given me a lot of food for thought.

- St Oz:

Thank you for the topographical assist! I'm actually fine being an isolated power; I just want to figure out whom the closest (if any) powers would be, both to avoid stepping on toes, and figuring out extraneous minorities to add into Donaubund. The northwest tip looks perfect, as I can imagine the terrain means even if I was technically surrounded by sea, only a few sections would be ideal for a warm-water port. I'd be glad to chat details with you later!

- al' Khem: Thankee, thankee! I've always had a soft spot for the Habsburgs, and wanted to explore the idea of something similar for some time. I've got more to add to the literacy discussion in more detail later; suffice to say, I like making my characters suffer... Even when by 'characters' we mean nations, aha! When I'm off work, I would be glad to chat via private message or IRC, though you may have to wait for my courage to grow a bit for that to happen, ehehe. The short list is:

  • A navbox, which I imagine is just a wiki template?
  • Actually getting image links to work; do I need to upload them to the wiki proper?
  • General advice on 'prettification'; my sense of style is somewhat... Lacking. Code shortcuts and advice of any kind appreciated!

Again, thanks!

- Bustos: Aha, I was beat to the punch - but thank you so much for the warm welcome, and I'm glad to see another monarchy as well; however the style of such may... Differ (I'm looking forward to catching up on your/all the FB this weekend!)

I think that's all for now; and just with minutes to spare, perfect. I'll see you all later, and thank you for the assistance. More to come, and hopefully be made more sensible as the weekend continues.

More than happy for such chatting :D
  • Yes it is just a template. By comparing the code between mine, Myrorias and Eluvatars. These are based off the Template:Navbox Example Nation.
  • Yes you need to upload the file and use the file extension via the wiki.
  • My style doesn't particularly fit to standard wiki protocols but instead to my own aesthetic principles. Teaching that kind of style would take years. However wiki styling and shortcuts are easy. I recommend copying/pasting from others and playing with your code to get a feel for it. Remember the preview button is your friend.

I hope that helps :D
