The Oasis
« on: June 14, 2007, 10:39:35 PM »
As the sun rose from the East, heat followed light in their eternal chase. Soon, the chill of the night was but a memory and Kash'ra Sah Fah'seir, an old leotaur stumbled out of his hut that he had built next to a relatively large stone barrier that blocked wind from blowing the sand to the oasis. Standing eight feet tall, the leotaur flexed and stretched in front of his habitation. His golden fur was mostly clean and his mane was thick, but scars riddled his body.

Kneeling with his four legs to drink from the small lake, he suddenly stopped and sniffed the air. Looking around him, he bared his teeth in a smile before rising up and walking into the water. Visitors were coming, so he might as well be clean to greet them. He wondered absently who it would be this time. Yet another recruiter who would not believe he had been retired.

Flavius Hanotepelus and Furio Hertarian stopped their horses side-by-side. They were wearing light, steel chainmail armor coated in silver, with a cloth, forest green hauberk covering their chest and upper legs. Their horses, tired of dehydration, were to be exchanged for camels at the nearest camp. But here was some water, for them all.

"Look at that, Flavius. Pff. A cat-man." Furio loosened his gorget and dismounted his horse. Flavius did the same.

"Oh, and he made a litter-box for himself too. ...Flavius?"

"Quiet, Furio. You know as well as I do we're not at home in Shanium anymore. Who knows, maybe these cat-men have a 'litter-box' twice the size of the Empire."

"Alright Flavius, whatever you say."

The horses quickly bent down to drink from the oasis, and the men filled up their water jugs.

Rune Dyken rode up to the oasis, thirty and needing water. He wore light leather Armour on his chest, and he had a mixture of hardened Leather and some bits of plate Armour for him legs. He had only a few pecies of mail for his arms, and a small shirt made out of Fur. He looked at the others, eyeing them as he let his horse drink. He kept his Quiver and Bow on his back, as s he always has done. But this time, he also had his Xiphos and his Gladius ready, in case of things got a littile out of hand. He filled up his canteen and he decied to make camp here tonight. He began pulling out his tent cloth and began to make camp thinking When will the guys leave?

Looking at the three visitors patiently in the pond for quite a long time, Kash'ra finally spoke out in a booming voice, "Welcome travellers," strangely enough the leotaur seemed to be speaking the mother tongue of each of the men who heard him. "I am Kash'ra Sah Fah'seir, what brings you to this humble oasis of peace?" As he said the last word, a glowing symbol appeared on each of the palm trees. Smiling to himself, Kash'ra looked at each of the men in turn, waiting for one of them to speak.

"I live here, this is my home. You are humans, is that true? Not many of you find their way here, this close to the Shifting Sands," the leotaur scratched his mane and turned to the third man. "You are not with these two? Judging by your clothes, you are not. Interesting variety."

Otto stumbled through the sand. He cursed the sun, its heat making him hot and tired. Standing about 5’11” and dressed in a fine regal blue robe, he staggered up a large sand dune, rising to see an oasis below. Reaching deep into his dusty satchel, he consulted a tattered piece of leather that marginally resembled a map. Nodding in satisfaction, he resumed to navigate his way down the dune.

The sun climbed ever higher into the sky, slowly and relentlessly following the pattern set out in ages long past.  The universe was ordered and precise, however chaotic it appeared at times to the tiny beings experiencing such small slices of time.

This, at least, was what crossed through the mind of one of the tiny beings as the camel it rode plodded over the top of a dune to bring a much-sought oasis into sight.  Clad in the loose-fitting robes and head-coverings favored by those living in the desert, one would almost assume he was native to the area... that is, until he came close enough to be seen clearly through the heat-produced haze lying perpetually above the sands of mid-day.  His fair skin and the lock of red hair that had escaped his headband betrayed his ancestry, though not as much as his child-like height and slanted green eyes.

He was a lowland elf from the dense forests far to the north-east.  His serene countenance barely concealed the mischievous streak that was so odd for his kind.  Long ago he had learned to let wisdom show through quite thoroughly before revealing his jovial nature, lest his fellows think him daft.

Strange, he thought, I would not have expected to see so many travelers about these desolate parts.  I quite fancied I would find myself alone in this oasis, apart from its usual inhabitants.  All the oases in this desert have some sort of creature settled in them, seeing as they're the only places offering water and shelter from the sun and wind.

Looking down on the others gathered about or approaching the pool, he sighed mentally and continued downward.

Ah, well.  Fate has brought more bizarre turns that this, I suppose.

Rune stood up and noticed that several other people were going to join this Little gathering

Who are they? Friends? Enemy's?

Rune began to pull out his bow and set his sights for the small figure on the camel

"HEY! WHO ARE YOU SHORTY?!"

"I don't think you want to do that, Dyken. Be civil." said Flavius, one hand on the hilt of his sword.

Rune grumbled as he put his bow away

"Well, then you talk to the shorty, and see what he wants!"

Finally reaching the bottom of the dune, Otto briskly walked passed the others gathered, quickly dusting off his robe in annoyance.

This damned sand gets everywhere.

He ignored the water in the oasis; summoning the cool fluid was easy enough, and he really did not want to have to talk to one of the assorted beings. Except one. He stopped at the edge of the oasis and closed his eyes briefly in concentration. He then resumed to lightly walk on the waters surface, in the direction of the one he had come to know as Kash'ra Sah Fah'seir.
