Breaking News: Agricultural Crisis

What was thought to be regular crop failure has escalated into the largest agricultural crisis in Jutensan history.  Hundreds of rice farmers have witnessed the death of each and every plant in their paddies without being able to curb the destruction through any conventional means.  So far, government scientists have been unable to determine the cause, but believe it to be a "plant virus" that may be spread through the air.

Agricultural Crisis Update

In a shocking press release yesterday, Cheung Li issued a statement on behalf of Parliament asking for foreign aid in the research of the Sweeping Rice Virus (as it has commonly begun to be called).

"...we do not have the resources necessary to combat this plague on our own.  Therefore, we must enlist the aid of foreign powers to determine the nature of the virus and produce a cure.  I ask that any nation with the available scientific means to research this problem to aid us..."

This comes as quite a surprise to those citizens not expecting our borders to open to foreign powers for another several months, a date set to correspond with the completion of the Embassy Complex in the capitol.

The Jutensan nation holds its collective breath as delegations from foreign powers start to arrive, beginning with the experts from Gallipoli-China, who reportedly arrived by train some time this morning.  Parliament issued a statement saying they are "hopeful" in regards to the efforts to combat the Sweeping Rice Virus.

In other news, the temporary moratorium on certain food exports has sparked controversy in several small port cities known for international shipping.  We interviewed some of the locals to see what they had to say.

A young fisherwoman holds the microphone. "Well, we need the food here, don't we?  If we can't save the harvest we don't want to be sittin' around sayin' we wish we hadn't sold all our rice, right?"

A shabby-looking man stands resolutely in front of the camera. "I take rice out in my boat and sell it off-shore fer a livin' and I need to make my profits.  Screw those farmers; let them starve!  They should have kept a better watch on their crop!"

An old market tender stands with his arms folded. "I voted for the moratorium and I'm sticking to it.  I only sell my wares to Jutensans now, and you'll find it's the same in every market in town."

Our top story tonight is the outcome of today's referendum.  The people of Jutensa have voted to support the resolution to change the maximum number of terms to be held by a Parliament Speaker to one.  This resolution was proposed by Speaker Cheung himself.  Our field reporter asked him why he proposed legislation that would render him ineligible to become the Speaker again in the next election when he had already gained so much public support.  He had this to say:

Cheung Li is shown standing on the West Garden of the Parliament building, surrounded by cameras and microphones.  He speaks with quiet dignity, but it is clear how strongly he believes in what he says.  "Allowing a Speaker to serve multiple terms simply does not support the principles this country stands for.  If we allow one person to represent Jutensa to the world for long enough, he will gain importance for himself both at home and abroad and soon fail to be a mouthpiece for the people.  When one looks at the speaker, he should not see the man; he should see Jutensa."

Breaking News: Agricultural Crisis Update

The Ministry of Agriculture has just released a statement that is sure to spark great rejoicing both at home and abroad: a strain of rice has been developed that resists SRV with a success rate of nearly 100%!  This new strain will be distributed throughout the nation as it becomes available, in the hopes that it will completely replace our current form by next year.

No word has yet come in regards to a cure for the plague still gripping our land.

The long-awaited Embassy Complex in our nation's capitol is due to be finished in a matter of days and the date has been set for the ceremony to honor its opening.  One week from today delegations will arrive and be stationed in their new homes, said to be among the most beautifully furnished in the city.  Parliament Speaker Cheung Li sent a world-wide message abroad to the nations of Taijitu this afternoon, offering the opportunity for diplomatic partnerships.
