The Holy Empire of Pope Alexander VI
« on: May 23, 2007, 01:54:32 AM »
History: The Holy Empire of Pope Alexander VI is an expanded remnant of an old papal kingdom from the pontificate of His Holiness the Pope Alexander the Sixth. Remote, small, and fiercely devout, the nation grew slowly but prospered economically from the 16th Century to the modern age. From its founding in 1499 to 1852, the state of Pope Alexander VI remained a small republic, however, with the Wars of Expansion from 1852 to 1860, it acquired a good deal more territory, thus it was renamed the Holy Empire of Pope Alexander VI. From the 1860s to the present day, the Empire's relatively small yet extremely well-trained and well-equipped army has tenaciously defended the newly acquired territory from bigger outside powers. The most severe of these challenges came in 1903, when the powerful city-state of Carthagia invaded a territory held by the Empire, an island called Viancia. Outnumbered 5 to 1, the army of Pope Alexander VI fought bravely and miraculously defeated the Carthagians at the Battle of Viancia Head.
The battle remains one of the greatest triumphs in the Empire's history, and is a source of pride and hope for all citizens even today.

Government: The government of the Empire of Pope Alexander VI is a traditional democracy. Due to the nation's small size, there is no bicameral legislature, just a Senate composed of fifty delegates from across the nation. They vote on all legislative matters, and also vote for declaration of war and other things. The head of state is officially and traditionally the acting Pope of the Roman Catholic Church, however, due to His very busy jobs concerning the Church all across the world, the Vatican employs a head of state to act in place of the Pope, the Archbishop Emperor. Like a traditional president, the Archbishop Emperor is chief executive, has the power of veto, is the Commander-in-Chief of all military forces, and is the spiritual and moral leader of the people. However, he is not elected - the only elected position in the Empire is that of senator. The Archbishop Emperor is appointed by each Pope.
