Cat and Mouse in the Snow
« on: July 23, 2012, 01:52:56 AM »
It was a cold afternoon in the mountainous nation of Letonna. A hard wind blew against the men and women of the 7th Battalion, whistling past their shouldered rifles and steel helmets. This would be their 3rd week in the cold, chasing armed rebels throughout the mountains of eastern region of The Empire of Letonna(EOL). Morale was low amongst the troops and officers of the 7th. They had been playing cat and mouse with the rebel  gorillas; leftovers from an earlier more violent political upheaval in Letonna for many years now. Frostbitten extremities, constant danger of attack, and unrelentless blizzards followed the troops.

Officially, these troops were deployed to “monitor unusual urban disturbances” in the villages to the north. Unofficially, there troops were part of a more hush-hush operation to stomp out the last traces of a failed rebellion. The rebellion had been a very unpopular event amongst the populace on both sides of the conflict, and it didn’t take long till public support warranted a peace agreement.  A public surrender was officially held roughly a decade ago. For the most part unknown to the populace, the Ministry of War has been funneling supplies and government resources into the stomping out of these rebels once and for all.

Moving further north, always keeping a watchful gave on the tree line and possible hidden cover spots for waiting gorillas, the men approach the Empires most eastern town of Halfer. A primary mining and mineral processing hub in the area, it is the last major Imperial stronghold before reaching the border with The Kingdom of Southern Mcmasterdonia. Gradually making advances towards Halfer, the battalion keep a look out for possible hidden rebel weapon cashes as well as suspicious people mingling about.

The ministry of War gave the Battalion colonel strict orders to forbid the rebels the chance to flee into the Kingdom of Southern Mcmasterdonia. However, with his troops slowly succumbing to the elements, he will have to take shelter in the warm refuse of Halfer, and hope the bureaucrats in the Ministry of war won’t be too harsh in discipline…

Ushbarn Castle sat  on the east of the Isengard Mountains that divided the Empire of Letonna from Southern McMasterdonia. Queen Matilda was in the throne room, looking out across the castle's grounds. The winter was bitter, and the cold deadly to outlanders.

*Ahem* your majesty, General Transissimo is here to speak to you

"Very, well. Send him in."

"Your majesty. Grave news I'm afraid, our scouts tell us that the rebels from EOL are attempting to make it across our border, they are being closely followed by a battalion of the Letonnan imperial army

"This is just outrageous. We cannot allow these rebels to come here, they will only seek to create more instability in the region."

"But your majesty, the imperial army is following them it would be...

"Silence General, and do not interrupt me again. We cannot allow the Letonnan Army to violate our nation sovereignty. I will not allow a single man cross our border, do you understand me general?"

"Yes your majesty it will be done".

"Excellent. Now leave me in peace, i have much to attend to"

General Transissimo turned and quickly left the throne room, typing a number into his phone quickly.

"Bring the defense towers online, and deploy the Princess Royals Battalion to the border. No man, woman or child is to cross our border and violate our Queens sovereignty. Take no prisoners, leave no survivors".

"The entire battalion, General?"

"Yes the entire battallion"

Within minutes, defence towers in the moutains had come online and the army on the move.

Southern McMasterdonia was ready to defend its sovereignty

After a few hours of a warm military barracks and a hot meal, the men of the 7th battalion set out. Although the border between Letonna and Mcmasterdonia was close, and some of the mountain peaks of the other side were within view, it could still be a few hours march till reaching the official border town of the east, St. Maxton. The troops marched in formation, preceded by scouts a half kilometer ahead. To their shock, they saw suspicious movement far off in the distance on the Mountains and hill tops in Mcmasterdonian land. The Commanding colonels first objective had been to crush any rebel fighters and restore order to the subject of the Empire. But the second has been to stop any people, military oriented or not from illegally crossing the border.

Although never officially have a full out war, conflict or crisis with any neighboring countries, The Empire of Letonna had never had good relations with The Kingdom of Southern Mcmasterdonia(KSM) or any of its neighbors or nearby countries. The region currently known as The Empire of Letonna has harbored a very expansionary and aggressive view for many periods of history, often intimidating countries of old.  With the establishment of The New Order in the Empire, and the ascendance of the latest Emperor, The Empire has placed a focus on diplomacy and international friendship with select nations. The Kingdom to the east has not yet been in to many diplomatic negotiations, and Mining and territory disputes of the past harbor a bitter distrust amongst people in the regions on both sides.

An hour has past, and the sun was low in the sky. Colonel Stanford consulted with his scouts and officers about peculiar sightings within the last hour of marching. From their reports, it appeared that a group of between 150-250 armed rebel freedom fighters moved eastward towards the boarder. Of even more interest, a large military defense force consisting of artillery, heavy infantry and suspected Calvary had set up on a ridge and the valley that divided the two nations. Perplexed by what to do, and conflicted by the Ministry of Wars strict orders to not instigate conflict with the Mcmasterdonians, the Colonel paced in a large arc, followed by the gaze of his officers.

“Captain,” The Colonel said, dazing off into the mountains, his breath visible in the cold.
“Uh, Yes sir!” The Captain said.
“Gather your men, make haste and try to cut off the advancement right at the border, we can’t have a single foot cross that line, understood?”
      “Understood”
And with a salute, he was off. Distant barking of orders could be heard. The Colonel turned to his officer of frontline communications
“you! Contact the ministry of Relations, tell them to have an ambassador wire the KSM and defuse the situation if he can.”

And with another swift salute, he was off. The colonel let out a heavy sigh, and turned eastward and remained still and silent, with his steel faced officers and scouts behind him…

This is exactly the thing that we should be worrying about. our interests in Parvusia are far too important to allow any conflict to jeopardize them. You all know very well that our [redacted] over there is crucial. We must tell OGAs and HIH about what's going on and let them decide we can't keep this a [redacted] issue forever.

A small boy, barely 5 years of age pants heavily as he runs, slipping as he goes on the wet snow. His mother calls out his name Alvendrer! Wait!

The EOL military not far behind them, he is not going to stop running for anything. He makes it up the hill and begins the slippery descent down the mountain.

A strange noise of churning metal echoes through the mountain

Alvendrer throws his hands over his ears, and trips, the pitch of the noise so loud it stunned him. In a second, a blast rings out around the valley, and the boy's small limp body collapses into the snow.

His mother screams, but the tower does not discriminate, it does not hold back. It blasts at her as well, hitting her straight in the chest, and knocking her down the mountain. Thus, the first of the rebels fell.

In the palace, Queen Matilda sits at the long oak table as she dines with the nobles and war lords of Southern Mcmasterdonia. These were her people, her lands, entrusted to her by her father Emperor Johnslo XI. She will do anything to defend them, commit the worst atrocities against invading people, whatever is necessary to protect the hold. She would not have her Father see her as weak.

*A small but portly man enters the dining room, and bows deeply to the Queen*

"Your majesty, the Ambassador from the Empire of Letonna is here to see you."
"Fine. I will meet him in the drawing room"
"Very well" says the butler, and he bows to the Queen again and leaves the room quickly.
"Lords and Ladies of the hold, I must go and attend to a vital matter of our national sovereignty. Continue to dine, and I will return shortly my friends"

*Lords and Ladies Stand, as the Queen leaves the room*

"Your Majesty, it is good to see you in fine health"
"Cut the pleasantries Mr Ambassador, what do you want?"
"I have come to assure you your majesty, that EOL does not intend to impinge on Southern Mcmasterdonia's sovereignty we only..."
"Even if you did, I would not allow it. Not a single soul is to cross our border, the penalty will be severe and irreversible"
"Your Majesty, we understand, our military will not under any circumstance cross the border into Southern McMasterdonia"
"Then our time here is over. Jones, see the Ambassador out"
"Yes your majesty, follow me Mr Ambassador"

The sun was low in the sky. Unnerved by the whispers overheard between officers, the men marched on through the snow eastward. Suddenly, only a short distance in front of the men, around the official EOL/KSM line, screams followed by the crackle of cannon fire broke the silence. The men immediately drew their rifles, and hunched down. Looking into the mountains, the flashes of the Mcmasterdonian cannons could be seen, but they weren’t aiming at the soldiers. A short jog down the sparsely road revealed a massacre of rebel forces, surprised and unexpecting of a Mcmasterdonian attack. The soldiers took cover near the border behind some large snow banks and stray trees. It would appear they failed to stop the rebel forces in time from causing an international situation. Unsure what to do, and awaiting orders from the battalion commander, all they could do was sit and watch the mcmasterdonian forces fire relentlessly into the valley.

A short ways behind the ‘front line’ his men had formed, Colonel Stanford had just received word from the Ministry of Relations that negotiations had failed, and the stance tward his troops was unknown.  Although no shots had been fired at his men yet, it was pretty clear they knew he was hear. The Mcmasterdonian army had brought much more firepower needed than to deal with some ill equipped rebels and civilian companions. The Colonel turned toward one of his scouts

“Prepare an officer and some escorts to try to cross the boarder and seek the commanding officer over there, I want to know why there are this close without official permission from our military command.”
A swift salute and he was gone. A scout, and officer and a few troops in a jeep quickly drove down the slushy road towards the border crossing of St. Maxton.  A gut feel told the Colonel he would never see them again. He turned towards another officer standing behind him
“Set up defensive trenches and fox holes. I want out light cannons pointed towards their positions and machine gunners and snipers ready at a seconds notice incase our envoy comes under fire.
More salutes and barking orders after.  This was going to turn into a career maker, or a widow maker for many of these soldiers. Taking one final look at the Mcmasterdonian position, he turned to his awaiting ride to the front line and marched away…

The small Jeep moved across the slippery mixture of snow and gravel as it crossed the border crossing into McMasterdonia. They were greeted by the high pitch crunch of churning metal.

"CAPTAIN LOOK"
The Captain turned to look and saw a fully armed and ready Mcmasterdonian Defence Tower
"Oh Fuck"

The tower blasted at the side of the jeep, knocking it over and perilously close to the edge of a very steep drop. Looking out from underneath the jeep, Captain Royden had only little time to pray for his wife, likely sitting at home in front of a warm fire.

The Tower fired again this time knocking the Jeep right off the edge, and down the 500m drop to the ground below.

Now late into the Saturday Evening, the Queen fast asleep in bed, was awoken by 3 hard knocks on her bedroom door.

"Your Majesty, General Tullius here to see you"

"Come in General, what is it at this late hour?"

"Sorry to disturb you, milady. But we have just received word that EOL troops have crossed our border, the defence towers did as they should. They are all dead."

"This is outrageous, I directly said to their ambassador that I would not have them step one foot over our border. If they had anything important to say, why not send a message. We must get in contact with EOL military command immediately. They have a lot of explaining to do"

Quote
Att: General of the Empire of Letonna Military
At approximately 9:23 this evening, EOL forces deployed across the KSM border. In direct violation of the Kingdom of Southern McMasterdonia's military. In accordance with discussions with the EOL ambassador all military personnel that passed our border were killed on sight, by Mcmasterdonian defence towers.
Her majesty, Queen Matilda of Southern McMasterdonia will not tolerate any violations of our national sovereignty. Should you wish to communicate with our military team, send your ambassador who will be offered the full protection of diplomatic immunity that is expected.
We are prepared to deploy all military forces to defend our lands and our Queen. We offer you a big "please explain" and hope that this conflict does not deteriorate further.
Our defence towers and military women will deal with any rebels that cross our borders, your military has no authority and is not welcome in these lands.

Signed
General Tullius
Commander of Her majesties Imperial Army

The cold sea air blew bitterly in the cold months. The Federal Republic of Cozulul is usually not known for such cold weather, however the changing air currents made for a cold season.  Out of the twelve provinces of the Republic, each one sent forth a member that they elect to be part of the Federal Council.  The Federal Council is in charge of everything and anything in the Federal Republic of Cozulul.

The Federal Council had urgently been called in to speak of matters that may ruin their esteemed nation that they had worked so hard to perfect. One of the many spies of the Federal Republic of Cozulul had heard news about a rebel armada being chased by the 7th battalion of The Empire of Letonna. Even though the spies had heard the armada was moving southeast into The Southern Kingdom of Mcmasterdonia, the Federal Republic knew they could not risk the danger that these punitive rebels could have on the high class society of The Federal Republics citizens.

Sorry, I didn't realize my mistake... I mean't to say....:

As a Precautionary step, the Federal Council ordered the deployment of a total of 690 ships to guard the sea of Soseliba to the North of The Empire of Letonna. The Federal Council also ordered the deployment of 500 soldiers from each Province to guard the border between The Federal Republic of Cozulul and The Empire of Letonna.

South Prioza- L’Iutol
This cover was Senya Funda, social security number 321-323-8-7824, black hair and deep navy blue eyes as typical Ozians look, and her complexion was fairer than most, for what she explains as Myrorian ancestry. However, the real Senya had maroon eyes, and instead of having Myrorian ancestry she just stayed inside too long due to work. This new assignment was a big break in her career at STIA, the Ozian intelligence agency. She was excited about this new cover about three months ago when she first assumed it, but now the job consumed her and dumped her as feces in a cesspool somewhere. Despite some pressure from her superiors, she decided not to become a mole of the target she was supposed to infiltrate, a Staii direship sponsored weapons and drug cartel. Instead she became competition, and she did so well for herself that she was noticed, receiving one of the famous “Let’s Chat” messages from her competition. Staii did one of two things with small times like her, integrated them or killed them. In reality she was flipping a coin here.

To the surprise of Senya, they let her choose the spot for the meeting. Instead of an area full of the most activity, she chose a wine bar by the beach with more subtle activity. Of the tourists the ones who were the most likely to understand any words that might be said were the people who listed on their resumes that they were strongly proficient in Ozian because they could order a beer with no trouble. Senya realized after sitting herself down at a table overlooking the white sandy beach of Prioza that her town outfit of a white blouse, jeans, and thick-rimmed glasses greatly contrasted with the tourists and other clients who looked ready to go to the beach.

The sun was as bright as ever with clear skies all around. It was a great day for relaxing and swimming for many tourists. As she waited for her informant she took more notes on the clients of the wine bar. Two tables from her, a couple and their three children, candidly speaking the subtle accent of Myrorian Inglish,  were experiencing their first “legitimate” Ozian cuisine. Senya couldn’t help but smirk when one of the children tried the flat bread, his voice yelping an “EW!” after he spat it out onto his plate. A waitress came over with an ashtray and a menu, then spoke cheerfully in Ozian to her, “Welcome to Zelde’s! What will you have this afternoon?”

Senya responded in almost too natural Inglish, “some table wine and a plate of Zimmel please (a multi-olive mash with vegetables).”

The waitress made an even faker smile and responded in broken Inglish “Naturally friend.”

Senya removed a short rectangular zuavka cigar from her blouse pocket, then scratched herself a light with complimentary restaurant matches. The Myrorian family took notice of this as thick blue smoke rose up to through the ceiling of purposefully neglected roof boards.  She sighed when she discovered that the cigar was too dry, and so put her mouth generously around the cigar so that her mouth tasted more of the sweet zuavka leaf to try to counteract its dry unpleasantness.

Another woman, obviously of Ozian descent, brushed by her in cargo shorts, a black tanktop, and a fish tattoo reaching across her shoulders. She took a seat at Senay’s table, her maroon eyes staring at her the whole time with dirty Ozian spilling out of her mouth, “Since ya look like those lost and innocent Christian women over-sucking phallic objects trying to get more than a 5 second orgasm. You must have a dry cigar, do not worry. I brought two," when she looked in her pockets she only pulled out one, "just kidding, only one."

“Oh well... How’d you know to look for me?”

"You’ve got a pretty mainland accent there, and I saw a mug shot of you before I got here, Senya Funda. Such a common name, and no matronymic. You’re a bastard child aren’t you? Your mother dumped her mistake on your father?” She chuckled something but noticed that Senya only seemed to roll her eye at her. The woman collected herself after some awkward chuckling and remarked, “Sorry. I’m Derya Burcula Sidik.”

“Ni-“

The waitress barged in with a bottle of wine and a glass with a plate of the olive mash, bread, and vegetables. She put down the glass as Senay was about to speak and poured one glass for her. “Here’s your wine and zimmel miss, “ then she noticed her new company, “Oh! You never said you were going to be accompanied by others. I’ll get an extra glass for your table wine.”

“Th-“

Now Derya interuped her, “So I’m going to make this simple, you have three choices, step out, join, or die. I’d recommend join, because we need some people like you.”

Senya blinked, was undercover work usually this easy? “I-…”

“Three hundred fifty untaxed g’s a year with travel expenses paid. You also have private health insurance, gym membership, and a great opportunity to open yourself culturally in a new country. Also you will have to learn a new language. Any questions?”

“Do I get to keep my life too?”

She snickered, “for now.”

Senya made a forced smile, then took a large gulp of her wine, “I see, what exactly am I doing?”

“We’re pursuing an old market that may have reopened.”

“Quit being vague, what for?”

Derya tapped her cheek, “Not entirely sure, but I believe it’s mostly arms, food, and medicine. I’m sure you’ll find other opportunities.”

Derya kept an unblinking gaze at Senya who arched her eyebrows, “And this is for…?”

“The Letonna black markets. My boss is convinced that another rebel uprising will consume the country again. We’ve lost contact with several of our old partners, and your job is to reestablish contacts and conduct business in the region.”
Senya tapped off a long ash from her cigar, “And if I refuse?”

“Look girlie, you’re small time. You sold some submachine guns to some punks and gave them some better deals than we did. You don’t understand the politics of doing such things, and you’re probably in the mindset that this market is competitive. It’s not. We rule this island’s streets and cops, and you don’t. We may not kill you, but you could get thrown in jail for a very long time. Besides, if you do a good job, maybe my boss will let you work somewhere less shitty.”

Senya sighed, establishing more of her ruse, “anyone specific I should be finding?”
The Myrorian family got up to escape the cloud of zuavka smoke. Derya answered her question, “since when do we differentiate which guns go to which gangs? They demand, we supply.”

Senya raised her eyebrows and took a deep puff of her zuavka to calm her nerves. After a moment of silence she asked, “When do I start?”

“Today,” Derya pushed a manila envelope to her, “Don’t worry about your lease, we already took care of it.”

The phrase ‘took care of it’ always made an unsettling feeling for Senya, and she wouldn’t be surprised if the landlord had a blue and purple face when she turned in her keys.

Derya rose up and dumped the rest of her portion of wine down without a wince, “Be at the West Docks at 10pm. Wear something comfortable.”

Senya sighed watching her leave. She finished off her glass of wine and fished out cash for the bill. She stood up and watched the shore from the bar while finishing off her cigar, then muttered, “I’ll miss you.” She tossed away the cigar then and glared at where it landed, "Fuck you."

It was earley morning, and the sun was just peaking over the Capitol of Letonna City. The Ministers and Prime minister had just finished their meeting in the conference room. Amongst the usual discussions including but not limited to black market growth, coalition citizens, and international relations, there had been a very serious discussion regarding the aggressive actions of The Empire of Letonnas neighbors: The Kingdom of Southern Mcmasterdonia and The Federal Republic of Cozulul. The Emperor only said “Deal with this as would see fit”, and so they did.
The Minister of War had just arrived back in his office, and summoned the nation’s top generals and admirals.
“This is a dark day for Letonna” The minister said to the summoned brass.
“It would appear that our neighbors to the north and east are provoking war without reasonable cause. Although we have had troubled relations, especially with KSM, we have never seen anything like this before. To respond to this increased aggression, I am ordering all military personnel into standby, and having General Graf and General Braftford take immediate action. Braftford will head east with his army and set up a defensive blockade in the Isengard mountains while Graf will do what he can to scare away with FRC’s away from their border. I don’t want any crossing of the border or any unwarranted killing of their military. However, observe, defend, and report back, understood?”
“Yes sir’s” and salutes all around; and the men and women were off. After finally stomping out(for the most part) a rebellion, war seamed on the horizon. After everyone had left, The minister of war took on a sour expression and turned towards a large window behind his desk overlooking uptown Imperial city. He knew there was no way the nation was prepared for war on two different fronts. Hopefully we could scare and bluff the others into submission.

Meanwhile in the Isenguard mountains.

After seeing the jeep explode just after crossing the border, Colonel Stanford had ordered all his men to take aim and remain on standby in defensive formation in their defensive positions. No movement could be clearly observed in the pitch dark night, but now that the sun was peaking over the east, it was clear more defensively positioned forces had arrived and were facing the Letoneese line. Word from the capital confirmed that military support was to arrive within the next couple hours.
Letting a rather large sigh, the Colonel said to himself aloud:
“I don’t think this is about rebels and petty border disputes anymore…”

The troops had been out in the cold wind and snow for months. The dedication of the troops was clear, they would sit in there trenches until the cold hands of death took them away. Loyalty to the Queen and the nation, came before all else.

It was difficult being Queen of such a dedicated nation, the Queen often found it difficult to sleep. Her father, the Emperor once told her that their people were like their family, he cared for each one, and worried for each one. The farmers, the teachers, the soldiers and the homeless. All were important, and all needed to be protected.

With this weighing on her heart, she had a diplomatic cable sent to the Emperor of Letonna himself

Quote from: ATT
Your majesty the Emperor of Letonna,

The military stand off between our two nations is unproductive. The winter is coming and many will die if this military show of power does not end. I invite you to discuss this with me personally, in the royal palace of Southern Mcmasterdonia.

The fate of your people is at stake, declining this invitation would be unwise.

Some months had past since The Federal Council ordered troops and ships to guard their perfecting nation against the rebels whom they thought would destroy them.

Newly elected Biryndra Ommos, the Federal Chancellor of The Federal Council, decided enough was enough, and the precautionary protection that the previous Chancellor had instilled was not worth the heartache to the families of the deployed.

This is her short speech she told the Council in order to dismiss small amounts of the deployed monthly:

"I am here today to discuss with all of you the tragic mistake that we have all made. That mistake is the deployment. The previous Chancellor, Tonranack Phurr, surely had reason to have our military be deployed. However, that was in the past, and the threat from the rebels of Letonna has subsided from our sight. I have created a plan to get all of the deployed back home or in the reserves, away from the so called "hostiles". Of course, this will not be an easy task, I presume it will take a couple of months, but after that we will be back in order and all will be well. So, I urge all of you to think this over and vote by next Saturday. Thank you for your time, I know it was not wasted."

The vote was 7-5, Biryndra's plan was passed and troops have been returning home as promised.

As for her thoughts on The Empire of Letonna, she has been pushing for contact between her and the Emperor for some time now, unable to get through. Maybe she was to late and The Emperor had forbid the contact between the two great nations. She knew that only time would tell....

It had been a few months since the ministers to the Emperor had all gathered for such a pressing discussion. There was still a very chilling cold war between the nations of The Southern Kingdom of Mcmasterdonia and The Empire of Letonna. Only a few deaths over the past few months, but many more were expected to fall victim to the incoming brutal winter.

These ministers were counselors to the Emperor himself, deciding what matters to handle personally, and what should warrant his attention. Earlier that day, diplomatic cables to the Kingdom to the east had actually sent over something other than military threats and warnings to retreat. It would appear that the queen herself wanted to meet the with Emperor regarding this war, and the imminent losses from the encroaching winter.
There was a moment of absolute silence amongst the councilors. Never before had a non-diplomatic leader, let along the emperor, been requested to leave the country for negotiations.
The silence was broken by the Minister of infrastructure “This is obviously a trap, Those McMasterdonians KNOW they can’t win in a war with us, so they are taking the cheap way out and going to kill our Emperor!”

“Now now I don’t know if we should jump to such assumptions just yet” chimed the Minister of international relations. “We don’t have any information, acquired or stolen, that leads to such desperations of dastardly deeds.”

“We should get their queen to come here! That way we can keep a close watch over here….through a rifle scope!" Chimed the Minister of Medicine.

Their bickering went on for a few minutes, and nobody seemed to notice a young man, looking to be about 30 with flowing black and red silken robes slowly walk into the room. He emotionlessly observed them for a few minutes before walking up to the large guilded round table, in-between the Ministers of Internal Postal service and Energy.

“it would appear to me that we are debating my next vacation, hm?”
Silence and ghostly stares from the ministers all around
“Well I was thinking of going to  the tropica beaches of Delfos for a little RnR, but seeing as Mcmasterdonia is closer, we will go there.”
Silence, sealed lips, and blank stares filled the room. The ministers never usually objected the Emperor, as it was hard to tell when he was actually in a happy joking mood, or if he was just baiting some to object to him. Either way, experience told them it was best to not talk when he was tell them what HE would do.

“And by the way, so save you man some time. I will also be doing the same with the leaders of Cozulul. I’d rather have somewhat good relations with our neighbors rather than cratered landscapes and grudges, understand?”
A single cautious nod from everyone and he was off. The next few days were setting up arrangements for the Emperor to travel to the Capitol of Southern McMasterdonia, and then after Cozulul to the west.
