The evil in Avana
« on: September 07, 2007, 12:59:10 PM »
Avana is the biggest Saletsian island and home to various ethnic groups. Unlike most of Saletsia, Avana is is not as modern and not as urbanized. The Hadevi have chosen to stick to their traditions. Though in some Hadevi cities and towns progress cannot be ignored.
The Hadevi were not only the biggest ethnic group on Avana but also the group responsible for the island's security. The large, old-fashioned Hadevi legion is considered to be a good place for Saletsians to start a military career. Some say: Once you were in the Hadevi legion, you are prepared for anything that may happen in Saletsia. The Hadevi are also known to be a very loyal people: loyal to the motherland.

On a rainy day in a Hadevi legion camp in the Western part of Adana a legionnaire comes in the office:
"General, a patrol unit of 6 mounted men has not come back yet."
"Since when?"
"They have been gone for 5 days now."
"There was a storm..their horses must have had some problems."
"Still 5 days are too much, general."
The general thought  a bit.
"You're right. Where have they gone to?"
"I sent them to the Vaduha areas."
The general stopped doing his paperwork and got even more ineterested. He looked up: "Vaduha, you say?"
"Yes sir...Vaduha."
After saying so, the young lieutenant noticed the nervosness of the old general which became apparent: "Are you okay, sir?"
"Of course...of course..."
"And?" the soldier asked.
"And what?" The general seemed to be absent and lost in deep thoughts.
"What ám I to do?"
"Well, you will have to send someone to look for them."
"Yes sir, of course."
"Make sure you send a larger unit."
"What for, sir?"
"It may be better..."
Puzzled by the general's comment, the lieutenant saluted and went out of the office and the building and mounting his horse riding back to his smaller camp.

There he assigned a group of 20 men to look for their missing comrades. The men immediately got their sabers, revolvers and bolt-action rifles and mounted their horses heading for the Vaduha areas of the West...deep in Avana's jungles.

"Hey Arturo, how coming you're coming with us? You're just a kid."
"No, I'm not! I'm already 19 and have been in the legion for 7 years now! The legion is my home!"
"Ah little Arturo...," said Pedro.
"Pedro, leave him alone," demanded Shavon. He was 35 years old being the oldest in the group and the highest ranking legionnaire.
Pedro laughed and went silent.
Then Arturo turned to the others: "You have any idea where the other guys may be?"
Shavon did not answer...
"Vaduha is all you need to know, little boy." answered another legionnaire.
"How come I've never heard of that place?"
"Because no one ever leaves the territory of the Vaduha...at least not alive."
"Oh come on! Fairy-tales."
"It is said that if you ever speak about what happened to Shagaza 18 years ago.."
"Shut up!" Shavon interrupted the speaking legionnaire. But then Arturo got interested after hearing the name Shagaza:
"Shagaza? That's where I'm supposed to be from...well I was to little when I was given to the legion to remember."
The legionnaire's face turned sad: "Given to the legion, you say?"
Shagaza turned his horse and approached the legionnaire: "If you don't shut up immediately, I will cut your head off!"
After that the legionnaire was silent. Arturo though still was thinking about what the man said.

After half a day's ride the group finally reached the jungle. There was a path leading into dense vegetation at whose start stands a wood carving depicting what seemed to be a winged creature with a monster's head and skulls to its feet.
Arturo felt uneasy at the sight of the statue: "What is that?"
Pedro answered: "That is Havesh, the god of the Vaduha. They have their own religion...an evil religion if you ask me."
Arturo looked closer at the statue and noticed something red: "Look guys! Is that blood?"
Pedro got off his horse to check it. "It's already dry...but seems to be blood. Maybe the Vaduha killed a pig and sacrificed it to Havesh...who knows."
"Nasty."
The group went on and entered the Vaduha territory.

The SAR team was now deep in the dense jungle still following the only path into the center of the Vaduha areas. It became darker and darker. Along the path they could see the chopped pieces of animals. On some poles, the skulls of goats.
"What do they o that for?", asked Arturo.
"I have no idea. These people are savages...and a bit creepy if you ask me," answered Pedro.

The moved on and then Pedro noticed a movement in the bushes.
"What the hell was that?!"
Shagaza turned round: "What's the matter?"
"I think there's someone in the bushes, captain."
"Off your horses, men!", Shagaza ordered.
The legionnaires got off their horses and readied their K98k carbines.
Shagaza turned to the nearest two legionnaires: "You two, go check the bushes!"
"Aye sir." The legionnaires carefully got into the bushes checking the area. The went further into the jungle as they could not see nor hear anything.
"Sir", yelled one legionnaire while turning around, "I think there's nothing in here. Might have been a hog."
Shagaza was relieved nothing bad happened. "Okay then, come back!" The others mounted their horses again while waiting for the two to come back.
"Hey we're gonna turn...", he then noticed his comrade was no longer there. "Hey Juanev, where the hell are you, man?" He yelled back to the others: "Captain, Juan--e-----ARGH!" His voice died out.
Shagaza got alarmed: "Off your horses! Move! Move!"
Everyone got off their horses and ran to the direction were they heard the cream from. After some moments they arrived at the place where they had heard their comrade before. The only thing they could find were the weapons and some blood.
Pedro go nervous: "What the fuck is this?! Who on earth could take away two grown up men that fast? And see! Blood!"
"Back to the horses!," ordered Shagaza.
They all went to the path. As they arrived though, the horses were dead. ´
Arturo got scared: "What are we gonna do now?"
Shagaza seemed nervous: "We got our orders. We will set up a camp over there. It's getting dark."
The troubled men did as they were told and set up their tents around a campfire. They also prepared some security measures around the camp. 3 legionnaire were to stay awake during the night.

The next morning Captain Shagaza got up first and was shocked as he saw none of the 3 guards.
"Everyone get up!" he shouted.
The legionnaires got up and looked around. Then Pedro spoke up: "What's the matter, sir?"
"Don't you notice something?"
Right after Shagaza asked the question, Arturo also noticed the other three were missing: "Where are Samuel, Vlot and Kanu?"
Everyone looked around though were not able to see anything until one found some blood leading deeper into the jungle.
"Pack your stuff, we're going in!"
"Yes sir."
Everyone packed their stuff and got ready. Two legionnaires went ahead of the others cutting a way through the bushes with their machetes.
Then after about an hour walking...
"What's that sound?" asked Arturo.
Shagaza listened: "Drums! Everyone get ready!"
The legionnaires gt their K98k carbines and went closer...the sound of the drums got louder and louder each step they took.
Then they could see what seemed to be a camp. The view was disturbing. They could see their comrades stuck on poles and bits of flesh being cut off by Vaduha women and put into pots. It seemes as though they served as meals. One legionnaire was still alive. It was surely on of the three guards.
"Fucking bastards! On position!" The legionnaires loaded the carbines and aimed at their targets.
An old-fashioned machine-gun was also readied.
A short look at Capt. Shagaza and:
"Fire!"
Everyone fired shot after shot, the machine-gun mowed down the enemy. Some warriors charged them but were stopped by heavy fire. Arturo saw the glaring eyes of Pedro when he tried to load his carbine.
He only feels hate for this tribe...To be honest, so do I.
After 8 minutes of killing there was no more ling Vaduha in sight.
Shagaza looked at them: "Okay let's go." They went to the poles where their comrades were. 3 men remained at the machine-gun.
Shagaza saw the heavily wounded legionnaire look to him...He was almost dead and full of pain...with his very last power, he lifted his head again and started talking: "Captain, end my suffering...."
Without hesitation, Shagaza pulled his pistol and shot his comrade.
Arturo was appalled: "Captain" What are you doing?! That's a crime!"
Shagaza bowed his head in honor of his fallen comrades then turned to Arturo: "Would you prefer having him suffer longer, little kid?!"
Arturo had never seen such anger on Shagaza's face.

Then the sound of something cutting through air... "Argh!" The legionnaires are alarmed as the corpses are hit by arrows. "Vaduha!" a legionnaire shouted just before being hit by another arrow in the head. The legionnaires could not see them and fired wildly into the woods.
"Let's get out of here!"
The ran to position from where they had come to find their 3 comrades who had stayed with their throats cut open.
Man after man fell while they were retreating. Some turned around every now and then to fire some shots. Eventually a Vaduha would appear right in front of them before being shot. Some charged with bolos coming right out of the woods or falling from above.
They could hear the drums again in the background: with very fast and loud beats. "Then they got to what seemed to be an old temple. The moving noises in the woods around them stopped.
Shagaza turned around again, only 9 of them were left.
"They stopped following us."
Then turned around again: "Seems to be a temple. Well men...we are going back."
Everyone was happy to hear that. The legionnaires went round the temple and moved on southwards in the direction of the base....
