Perfectly Fine

“Why the hell do we need soldiers anyway?”

“I don’t know…hostile jellyfish?”

“Don’t fuck with me”

“Sorry sir”

Captain Nilsson watched as his first mate shuffled off towards the portside of the ship. No funding and no talent makes jack a dull boy he thought to himself. Every year he lost a few more talented marine biologists and got a few more First Mate Coen’s. The gin bottle was almost empty, drained of every last drop.

“Second Mate Baxter, how’s that storm shaping up?”

“Oh, its no problem sir, it’s very minor. It shouldn’t interfere with our reef survey”

“Good, good…. Baxter? Do I look drunk to you?”

“Erm…no sir, not at all”

Nilsson stared over at the seas under the storm, the grey waves gently rolling into the distance. It’ll be fine he thought to himself. Perfectly fine.

*****

“Damnit the whole ships going down!”

“Corporal Hartsock! Get in the lifeboat! Now! Now!”

“Where’s Baxter? Where the fuck is he?”

“Man over board!”

“Shit! Hold on this is gonna be rough!”

“We need to go back! There are men in the water!”

“To hell with that, just keep rowing, I can see land!”

As we understand it TS Saunders went down near Yeltsin Reef at 19:32 today. As far as we are concerened, it doesn't get reported due to the embarrasment our nation could suffer. Cancel any attempts to find survivors. We are watching the society's actions closely.

The black was starting to overwhelm him again. He felt himself fading in and out of consciousness, he felt like he was going to die.

“Wake up Corporal, wake up!”

Someone hit him in the jaw, the pain shooting into his brain. His eyes started to open, slowly.

“Sarge, that didn’t really seem necessary…”
Hartsock’s eyes flickered open, he felt himself being dragged to his feet by the other men. His squad.

“Sarge, where the…”

He looked around. He didn’t recognise any of it, the barren grey stretching into the distance and the cold.

“Here we’ve got some warm clothes, put ‘em on quickly.”

“And we found the guns!”

“Shut the fuck up Bagley”

“Sorry sir”

He pulled on the furs that the men had found. Bagley handed him on of the 45’s and some clips. He stretched his legs, getting the circulation back into them. His head kind off hurt and his ears were ringing, but he’d live.

“So who else made it?”

“Just the soldiers. There’s me, Pvt Bagley, Pvt Corrison and there’s Pvt Zielinsk scouting the area, but that’s it.”

“And we got to slaughter some Reindeer!”

They all stared at Bagley, giving him one of those looks that said “psycho”. Sarge started off to find Zielinsk. The rest followed.

"Where are we?"

No one answered.

Zielinsk’s corpse was gently being blown from side to side in the wind. Corrison, the closest thing they had to a medic, was examining the dark red gashes along his naked flesh. There were bits of him missing around the thighs and arms. The teeth marks were still visible along his back. He’d been hung up from the greying almost dead tree; his lips had gone purple along with the rest of his body.

“Who did it sir?”

“Cannibals, definitely. I don’t know nothing about any of the natives in this area. It looks likes he gave them one hell of a fight though.”

They glanced at the spent cartridges littering the permafrost. There was a trail of blood leading into the distance. Without a word, they set off following the trail.

*****

They crawled over the hill overlooking the village. It was a small, primitive village, mostly tents made from furs and animal dung. They could make out the inhabitants shuffling around. They were clad in animal furs. They were squat and had a vague yellowness to their skin. Hartsock and Corrison were almost around behind the main camp. Sarge and Bagley were going to try a forward assault to drive off as many natives as possible, Hartsock and Corrison were going to sneak attack any that stayed. The natives were tearing chunks out of some unidentified piece of meat, the pulpy redish mass dripping onto the floor.

“Okay, let’s do this!”

Sarge and Bagley charged up to the front of the camp, guns blazing. Some of the natives dropped instantly, others limped off. The rest stayed and charged at Sarge and Bagley, spears drawn. They fired wildly into the writing mass of natives. They fell upon them, screams echoing across the hill.

“Fuck this!”

Corrison was over the hill, carefully aiming at each native and dropping him with a headshot. The ones that weren’t dead scattered, a few were attempting to drag away comrades and paying for it with a bullet to the head. Bagley and Sarge were dead, multiple spears jabbed into the guts and long vertical slashes across their faces.

“Fuck it, we need to go! Now!”

“Shut it Corrison, can you hear that?”

There was a faint crackling coming from one of the tents.

“Is, is that a radio!?!”

They scrambled through the opening in the tent, searching around and kicking over stacks of totems and furs. They found it, underneath a pile of maps and other things that must have washed up from the ship. It was crackling away faintly, probably almost out of power. They stared at it for a few moments before grabbing it and running back to the beach were they landed.

President Sielke sat in his darkened office. It was about midday when he received the phone call from the DGI director Kramer.

“Hello, Sielke speaking?”

“Its Kramer, the situation has developed”

“Oh, really? How so?”

“Around 15:40pm today we received a garbled radio message from some of the surviving crew from the TS Saunders, that went down off the Yeltsin Reef, near Inglo-Scotia. It seems the survivors from our ship have managed to survive the tundra.”

“Excellent! So now we have an even stronger reason to begin colonising that region. I’m impressed Kramer.”

“Yeah, we were going to use some crap about an anti-imperialist peacekeeping agenda in the region. With this we can just say it’s a rescue mission and an attempt at developing the region.”

“And the 1st division are ready to launch?”

“Ahuh, we’ve packed them aboard some research vessels, hopefully they’ll be landing on the shores soon.”

“And what do we know of the survivors?”

“All of them were soldiers. Apparently there were five of them but three were killed by natives, which will help bulk out our claims that the region needs to be bought under the control of a civilised nation.”

“Excellent. I hope to hear of a great victory.”

Sielke put the phone down. He breathed a sigh of relief and glanced at the map of Taijitu, observing the many places where other nations had begun to establish colonies, wondering how long it'd be before there was a nation trying to colonize the homeland.

“I can see two men on the shore. There wearing furs, they might be natives or they could be the guys; it’s kind of hard to tell. ”

“We’ll land and find out.”

General Waino walked away from the Lieutenant and glanced at the assembled soldiers milling about the deck below. They’d only bought half the division with them, just 5000 men. It’s all we’ll need he thought to himself. The report said they’d only be meeting minor resistance, and from a bunch of spear wielding natives at that. Everything would be perfectly fine.

*****

The soldiers were spread out scouting the villages. It was the tenth village they’d ‘liberated’ today. So far the only resistance they’d met was from one old guy who’d grabbed a spear and run screaming at the soldiers. He’d been dead before he hit the ground. They’d probably have the whole region taken over in a few days. He didn't want to stay though. The guys he’d seen who’d been stuck here were almost insane. Apparently they’d attacked a whole village of those spear throwing primitives with noting but pistols, clearly insane then.
The soldiers finished checking their way through the rest of the natives. He glanced at the bodies behind him, lined up and with a single bullet to the head. Not so resisting now he thought to himself. He was pretty sure the rest of the units were done mopping up by now. His breath stood out like mist against the air. Not long now, not at all.

*****
President Sielke disembarked from the ship, a gaggle of advisers and agents helping him onto the icy beach where the podium had been set up. There was an artic wind blowing in from the sea, chilling the assembled soldiers and explorers to the core. There was also an assembled crowd of natives, a mixture of chiefs and warriors garbed in animal furs. He walked up to the podium, using it to shield himself from the wind.

“Ladies and gentlemen, I’d first like to thank the efforts of our valiant soldiers for liberating this great land from its barbarous overlords. They have crushed all opposition from the savages and drove them into the seas.”

Sielke glanced at the natives, examining their faces. Worn, defeated, bloodied, humiliated. Beautiful he thought.

“This island we have captured will serve as a statement to the world and to these savages who now know the might of our nation.” Sielke smiled again; somehow it was icier than the beach itself. Behind him some soldiers were unfolding a map showing the recent conquest.

“We will use this colony, here by named Sielke Land in my honour, to generate labour, ‘volunteers’ for our armed forces, resources to increase Tarrotown’s prosperity and to spread our religious beliefs to a new continent. Truly a great day for our people.”

Sielke stepped away from podium expecting whoops of joy and admiration. All he got was a stony silence. You can’t win them all he thought as he was helped back up the boat, but at least he could try.

So I have to go through the RP council to get this confirmed, right?

OOC:  Saint Oz first said that's what we need to do but then changed that decision later on when trying to add on his own colony (of which I am not sure if he even RP'd it) to the resource list.

So far, Simple and I have proposed our expansion and colonization, respectively, to a vote for the RP Council (both are currently still in the voting process).  I personally agree with this line of thought.  Supremo along with Vark put their colonization in the discussion but never brought it to a vote.  Their claims were eventually added on the map.
