A Nomad's Life, The Simple Life
« on: December 13, 2007, 08:27:49 AM »
Jacob Asher was riding his beautiful bay mare alongside the long caravan that had been his home for the last few weeks. These people were traditional Ibrahimics. Some were descendants of the first Ibrahimics in Canada, and other are descended from Canadians. The people were dressed in simple robes. The women wore sashes with their robes, while the men wore long buttonless coats. Dogs, and sheep were walking next to the caravan. They had been moving all over the Central Plains that had been their home. Jacob scratched his small beard. He was of Canadian-descent becuase of his light skin, while the many of the traditional Ibrahimics had brown skin. His horse's name was Sara. Jacob looked over the caravan. His younger sister Sheba was walking with their father. Jacob's father was a tall, strong man with a long white beard. He was the High Priest of the tribe. He wore the traditional robe and coat of the men, but also wore a yellow and blue crown of willow branches and a large red sash. Sheba still hadn't turned ten so she still had to wear a scarf over her face and hair. She saw him and smiled.

He waved back. Sara gave off a low niegh. They had arrived at their destination. The Red River was the summer home of the tribe. The salmon would be going up the river and the grass was green. Good food for the tribe and the sheep. The caravan stopped. Jacob got off of Sara and tied her to a nearby tree. He went and helped a group of men unload the materials for a yurt. The men and women worked together to get the yurts up. That took them a few hours, but soon the yurts were up. Then the men went out to hunt for the evening's food. The women took out their harps and began to make beautiful, decorative carpets or looked for wild fruits and vegetables. Jacob however stayed behind. He was standing on a hill with his horse. He was waiting for someone. Another tribe would be living with them for the summer. But it was someone who was riding with the other tribe. Someone special.

Eva awoke to the rhythmic mantra of a wood wheeled passage over an old trail. Her hands were cold...in the middle of the night she'd dreamt of snow. To warm her fingers, and to ascertain that her treasure hadn't disappeared, she reached into her deerskin moccasin boots, happily relieved that her small beaded pouch was still there. Fiddling with the loop tie, she lifted the pouch out of her boot and clutched it over her heart.
She meditated in the early morning warmth listening attentively while her heart beat melted with that of her tribe's caravan. Then her belly grumbled. Hunger. Soon the group would park and rest awhile for breakfast. The idea of a soothing hot mug of infusion appealed to her senses.

Jacob had been waiting for them all day yesterday, but know he slept. His father, Benjamin woke him up. "Come, boy. No need to sleep for hours while others are working." Jacob grunted and reluctantly got up. He put his jacket over his robe. His moccasins were right at his feet. He put them on and walked outside. breakfast was being served. He loved that smell of the early morning dew and coffee. Sheba ran over to him with a group of other children. "Jacob, come have breakfast with us."

Jacob loved his sister. She reminded him so much of his mother whom she never knew. Jacob replied. "Sorry Sheba, Father wants me at the other table. I will come and visit though." He was too old to sit at the little kids, he got to sit with the adults. As he took his seat next to his father, Benjamin stood up. The others and Jacob closed their eyes and lowered their heads. "May God bless this meal in front of us. May He deliver our friends here to us safely. In that we pray, to God and the Holy Ghost."

They all nodded and started to eat the deer meat, hash-browns and eggs. Jacob slowly ate and he looked back at the kids as they laughed. He grabed a bunch of small fruits and walked over to them. Their fruit bowl was empty. So he picked it up and said. "Ok, when I put this down, there will be fruit." Sheba and the other kids giggled. He put it down and the fruit wasn't there. Instead the kids grabbed the bowl and all looked at it. While they were occupied, he pulled the fruit from the sleeves of his coat and showed it. "Told you the fruit would appear." The kids giggled. He gave them the fruit and left for his table.

Stepping out onto a green field of a sunny early summer morning, eased Eva's crossover from dreams to waking. The morning fire burned lowly in it's rock circle. Nearing it, the delicate perfume of ginger root and apples stewing perfumed the atmosphere.
She nodded humbly, offering her shy pleasant grin to her Elders that sat chatting in hushed voices near the pit. Slowly and delicately, she lifted one of the handcarved wooden mugs from the stack of them, and ladled herself some brew.
The Elders, had known her and lived beside her, and cared for her, of course, ever since she could remember-
-if only she could remember more, she pondered.

The Elders did not stir a bit when Eva walked off to find a suitable and peaceful sitting place where to sip her drink, brush her hair, and then tumble her few treasures for guidance and revelation.

The Jitsu tribe had been making the annual rotational trek from Great Bear Woods aross the Great Plains to the edge of the Red River for countless moons.
Their oral traditions required each adolescent to discover their totem at the age of 15. Two years earlier Eva had undertaken a month long retreat from the tribe and finally received her totem, the green spotted frog, in a dream...

A runaway prairie mouse waited confused at the river edge-he was on his way to the faraway land but didn't know how he could arrive there without crossing the river. Animated as a frog in her dream, it was Eva's destiny to assist the mouse.

Jitsu Elders understood the significance of Eva's totem, and yet they couldn't foresee how fate would reveal itself.

ooc: Ibrahimism is a monothestic religion similar to Judasim. The use of animal totems is considered pagan and only the Cree use animal totems. The Ibrahimics are are more similar to gypsies.

Jacob rode Sara all the way to the hunting grounds where they would be looking for either deer or antelope. The great herds of bison were still around, as well as the mustang herds. Sara was one of that breed. Jacob's rifle was in it's holder attacjed to the saddle. The saddle that he was using was a cross between the Inglish saddle and the American saddle. It had a smaller and taller horn than the American saddle, but was more comfortable, like the Inglish saddle. He looked contently. He enjoyed the outdoors. It had been a few moons since he had been to the cities. Regina was not that far from the settlement, but only the men went to go pick up supplies. Jacob was still seventeen, old enough to marry in Orthodox Ibrahimic tradition. But he was not a man yet. He still had to go through his dream quest and converse with God. God would show him his destiny.  Jacob found his quarry. A tall, strong antelope. He got off Sara and found a perfect spot to aim and shoot the antelope. He looked through the scope and carefully took aim. He aimed for the heart and fired....
