I'm currently reading The Sunborn by Gregory Benford (science fiction), A Different Universe by Robert Laughlin (popular science), and The Mind's I by everyone.

Books I return to again and again are Dune by Frank Herbert and The Stranger by Albert Camus (this last for the same reason that I pick at a sore tooth.)

I'm re-reading the Harry Potter series right now - the literary equivalent of comfort food.  Next up I'm going to go back over Dostoevsky's Notes From Underground, but it's light reading only for the time being.

One of my favorites would be Speaker for the Dead by Orson Scott Card; I'd almost name it my all-time favorite, but I'm emotionally attached to too many novels for that.

Dostoevsky is another one of my favorites.  There's a lot of great Russian literature, maybe because the country's been through so much misery.

I'd also recommend Nikolai Gogol's Dead Souls, a very dark comedy.  The only bad thing about the novel is that Gogol wasn't happy with the manuscript and set fire to the second part of it, so there's no ending.  What's left is still worth reading, though.

As for my favorites, I'll have to go by genre.

High Fantasy- Lord of the Rings
Low/Realistic Fantasy- A Song of Ice and Fire, by George R. R. Martin
War/Action- Brotherhood of War, by WEB Griffin
Comedy- Tim Dorsey's Serge Storm novels

I agree, Gogol has a strange kind of writing, but i just love his plays and short stories. My favourite one is The Nose, so if you get the chance, read it:) . Also from the Russian literature, try to read Puskin.

My favorite might be Moby-Dick by Herman Melville.  His writing style is painful to read for some people, but I like it.

I'm reading The Gulag Archipelago by Alexander Solzhenitsyn right now.  It's interesting, well-written and depressing.
I love Melville
have you read Benito Cereno-it is best if you have read his journals also I love that short story....
My favorite and don't hold it against me  :(...Is Hamlet.....I love the Insanity he portrays and the revenge he gets....he also has some of the best lines in any book I've ever read....and I also like Ivanhoe as close second ....and third is Canterbury Tales ,all pop culture dribble ,I know but I love it so!!!! ;D
"The threat is more powerful than its execution"-Emmanuel Lasker
"My vengeance is awake and she is a falcon that slumbers not till fully gorged"-Ivanhoe
"Come, the croaking raven doth bellow for revenge"-Hamlet
"It is always better to sacrifice your opponents men"-Savielly Tartakower
"Those who forget the past are comdemned to repeat it"-George Santayana
"In every enterprise consider where you would come out"-Publilius Syrus
"Cowards die many times before their deaths; The valiant never taste of death but once"-Julius Caesar

I love to read. I've just finished The Time Traveller's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger, it was surprisingly good actually.

My favourite books of all time is more difficult, like Allama I'm too attached to novels to name any single one my favourite. The first ones that spring to mind are To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier.
