I am running an unofficial poll on what the rules of ##taijitu should be.

I am still open to rule suggestions to add to this poll.

Cyber sex should be allowed. It's a natural way for people to get to know themselves and others.

While I like the word, "Asshat," it won't be getting my vote.  :-P

Okay I'm leaving out 'common sense' because those who have it use it, and those who don't will argue the definition til the cows come home.  Let's face it, if we all -had- common sense, we wouldn't have been going through what we did over the last several days.

The number one problem in my book is the RANTING / FIGHTING.  You all know I'm there a -lot-.  And I've seen a number of people driven from the room in aggravation.  It wasn't over single offensive remarks.  It wasn't over swearing.  It was always over rants and arguments lasting an hour or more.  That's what's doing us the most damage in there.  Heck, I've come close to taking a vacation from the channel myself over it.

Ya but, asking people to pipe down a complaint over blatant racism (a lá "black people should be hung") so that the channel can be shiny and happy and filled with magical unicorns is not okay in my book.  When I see something like that, I will speak up, and I will not pipe down until it's taken care of.  The magical sparkly unicorns can wait for that.

Someone's expectation of a peaceful irc channel should not take precedence over someone else's right to a racism-free space.

I don't think there should be too many fixed rules.  No spamming, maybe.  If someone wants to be a jerk in the IRC channel they won't get anywhere anyway.

I'd vote for 'No being an asshat' if we could choose more options.

Let's not bring the entire 2 hour long fight over here now.  That's not what we're discussing here.

The ONLY thing we're discussing here is what rules we should make for our IRC -here and now- in order to prevent such things from happening again.  If you're not happy with the options presented, then post your suggestion for a different one.

Asshat is another one like Common Sense.  It's too broad and everyone will decide on their own interpretation, which will conflict.

I'm the Asshat, but the point that Elu missed was that I explicitly said that he should not allow anyone to propose a rule like that that prevents Asshattery.

Alright, we have some temporary rules set up.

Now, what about those who refuse to identify themselves?  There have been several instances of that lately, and SD doesn't allow them to be voiced if they won't change their nick to something recognizable.  So, are we going to decide whether that should be a rule or not?

Also, for those who have ops, what will be the procedure when someone is breaking a rule?  Warn first, then kick, then ban/kick if they keep on?

We also need to define whether one op can override the other.  I've seen one person -v someone or kick/ban them, and then someone else in the room reverses it.

Rules are never going to work unless all the ops are enforcing them.  And they can't just override each other at a whim.  I've even seen ops wars happen, when one with ops kicks another with ops, who then returns and kicks the other one back.  All fine if it's done as a joke, but sometimes it's done in seriousness because they're ticked off.  That cannot happen.

We also need to stop giving out ops to everybody and their brother.  The only ones who SHOULD have ops are those who are responsible in IRC.  Not those who continually cause problems in it, and certainly not those who are irresponsible with ops.

Comments, anyone?
