Saffron Revolution

I don't know if you've been following the news, but all that's on the BBC (The only trustable news source) is the protests in Myanmar/Burma. They've been going on since mid-August, but the Buddhist monks leading it have stepped up their demands, and now want the military junta in power to step down. The Junta started cracking down today, with I think 3 people killed, and several more injured. A Portuguese associate with the EU is calling for increased sanctions on Burma, and a French associate is calling for a boycott of the Beijing Olympic Games, in order to force China to rectify the situation in Burma (Right now it's just standing by).


Thoughts? Comments?

I've seen it a bit in the news also, but Iran's president has gotten a lot more attention than that.


How big are these protests compared to those in the past? I know this isn't the only time the junta has forcefully cracked down on protestors.

I've been watching this with keen interest since I first read about it in last week's The Economist. Certainly, it would be nice to think that this could work out and finally bring down the Junta, but history has taught be not be too optimistic about these things.

The biggest protest since the ones of I think 1987 or '88. Bigger, actually.

And of course Iran's president gets more attention. Do you watch American news?

Pragmia: Weren't they the ones that predicted that of the three possible outcomes (Peaceful dispersion of the protesters, junta steps down, protesters put down by force), the last would be the most likely?

I believe you are referring to Tiananmen Square, which took place in 1989.

Myro's right, there was a large protest in 88 that was put down by force. Some 3,000 people were killed I believe... Soldiers have already begun firing into crowds of protesters this time, but it could mean trouble for the junta if too many monks are killed.
