I may be sketchy on this, but he wrote Fear and Loathing in LV and created Gonza or Gonzo (can't remember) journalism. The cover of the movie adaptation of FLLV is a warped image of a persons upper torso, so that's where I think you get the avatar, as I don't know of any other images associated with him which have that specific art style.

Gonzo is a type of journalism that throws facts into a fictional story.

Just plain Gonzo is where the author is mixed into the story. The only example you would know would probably be Lemony Snicket's "A Series of Unfortunate Events".
