Yeah! Another Metallica fan! Though how you pick Nothing Else Matters as your favorite I will never know.

Well, you know, it all depends on what day you ask me.  Today, it's Nothing Else Matters.  Tomorrow, it'll be a different one.  But Metallica is one of the necessary food groups essential to life.   ;)

"Sankaritar" by Ultra Bra:

Tulin eilen kuusta
Apollo 12
matka oli raskas
vaikka aluksessa
vallitsi painoton tila

Mutta kotiin tullessaan
reipas astronautti
haluaa nähdä heilansa

Tulin eilen lännestä
kultakuume menossa
reissu oli hurja
koska jälkeeni
jäi kasa kuolleita

Mutta kotiin tullessaan
hurja paimenlikka
haluaa nähdä heilansa

Tartu ranteisiini
purista lujempaa
tee kaulaan merkki
anna ymmärtää
että voit minut alistaa

Saavuin tulevaisuudesta
2040
siellä oli rankkaa
ohjelmoituna
suojelin viattomia

Mutta kotiin tullessaan
notkea konenainen
haluaa nähdä heilansa

Literal translation - does not go with the melody, of course. The title translates to "Heroine."

Came from the moon yesterday
Apollo 12
the trip was heavy
even though the ship
was in a weightless state

But coming home
the energetic astronaut
wants to see her man

I came from the West yesterday
gold fever is high
the trip was wild
because I left behind me
a pile of dead

But coming home
the wild cowgirl
wants to see her man

Grab my wrists
squeeze harder
make a mark on my neck
let it be understood
that you can dominate me

I arrived from the future
2040
it was tough out there
programmed
I protected the innocent

But coming home
the flexible machinewoman
wants to see her man

Then his message gathers meaning and it spreads across the land
The rewarding of his pain is the following of the man
But ignorance is everywhere and people have their way
Success is an enemy to the losers of the day
In the shadows of the churches, who knows what they pray
For blood is the language of the band.

The Spanish bulls are beaten; the crowd is soon beguiled,
The matador is beautiful, a symphony of style
Excitement is ecstatic, passion places bets
Gracefully he bows to ovations that he gets
But the hands that are applauding are slippery with sweat
And saliva is falling from their smiles

So dance dance dance
Teach us to be true
Come dance dance dance
’cause we love you

Thus is part of it.

We must have been separated at birth.

Make his fight on the hill in the early day
Constant chill deep inside
Shouting gun, on they run through the endless grey
On the fight, for they are right, yes, by whos to say?
For a hill men would kill, why? they do not know
Suffered wounds test there their pride
Men of five, still alive through the raging glow
Gone insane from the pain that they surely know
[chorus:]
For whom the bell tolls
Time marches on
For whom the bell tolls

Take a look to the sky just before you die
It is the last time you will
Blackened roar massive roar fills the crumbling sky
Shattered goal fills his soul with a ruthless cry
Stranger now, are his eyes, to this mystery
He hears the silence so loud
Crack of dawn, all is gone except the will to be
Now they will see what will be, blinded eyes to see
[chorus]

"The Mary Ellen Carter" By Stan Rogers

Rise again, rise again
That her name not be lost to the knowledge of men.
All those who loved her best and were with her to the end
Will make the Mary Ellen Carter rise again!

She went down last October in a pouring, driving rain.
The skipper he’d been drinking and the mate he felt no pain.
Too close to Three Mile Rock and she was dealt her mortal blow
And the Marry Ellen Carter settled low.
There was just us five aboard her when she finally was awash.
We'd worked like hell to save her, all headless of the cost.
And the groan she gave as she went down, it caused us to proclaim
That the Mary Ellen Carter’d rise again!

Well, the owners wrote her off, not a nickel would they spend.
"She gave twenty years of service, boys, then met her sorry end.
But insurance paid the loss to us, so let her rest below",
Then, they laughed at us and said we’d had to go.
But we talked of her all winter, some days around the clock,
For she's worth a quarter million, afloating at the dock.
And with every jar that hit the bar we swore we would remain
And make the Mary Ellen Carter rise again!

Rise again, rise again
That her name not be lost to the knowledge of men.
All those who loved her best and were with her to the end
Will make the Mary Ellen Carter rise again!

All spring, now, we’ve been with her on a barge lent by a friend.
Three dives a day in a hard hat suit and twice I’ve had the bends.
Thank God it’s only sixty feet and the currents her are slow
Or I’d never have the strength to go below.
But we’ve patched her rents, stopped her vents,
Dogged hatch and porthole down
Put cables to her fore and aft and girded her around
And tomorrow, noon, we hit the air, and then take up the strain
And watch the Mary Ellen Carter rise again!

Rise again, rise again
That her name not be lost to the knowledge of men.
All those who loved her best and were with her to the end
Will make the Mary Ellen Carter rise again!

For we couldn’t leave her there, you see, to crumble into scale.
She’d save our lives so many times, living through the gale,
And the laughing, drunken rats who left her to a sorry grave,
They won’t be laughing in another day.
And you, to whom adversity has dealt that final blow
With smiling bastards lying to you everywhere you go
Turn to, and put out all your strength of arm and heart and brain
And, like the Mary Ellen Carter, rise again!

Rise again, rise again
Though your heart it be broken and life about to end
No matter what you've lost, be it a home, a love, a friend
Like the Mary Ellen Carter, rise again!

Rise again, rise again
Though your heart it be broken or life about to end
No matter what you've lost, be it a home, a love, a friend
Like the Mary Ellen Carter, rise again!

We must have been separated at birth.
Mom gave you all the fur.

Here's today's, playing on my stereo now.

New blood joins this earth
and quickly he's subdued
through constant pain disgrace
the young boy learns their rules

with time the child draws in
this whipping boy done wrong
deprived of all his thoughts
the young man struggles on and on he's known
a vow unto his own
that never from this day
his will they'll take away

what I've felt
what I've known
never shined through in what I've shown
never be
never see
won't see what might have been

what I've felt
what I've known
never shined through in what I've shown
never free
never me
so I dub thee unforgiven

they dedicate their lives
to running all of his
he tries to please them all
this bitter man he is
throughout his life the same
he's battled constantly
this fight he cannot win
a tired man they see no longer cares
the old man then prepares
to die regretfully
that old man here is me

what I've felt
what I've known
never shined through in what I've shown
never be
never see
won't see what might have been

what I've felt
what I've known
never shined through in what I've shown
never free
never me
so I dub thee unforgiven

you labeled me
I'll label you
so I dub thee unforgiven

Blue Hawaiian by Pavement

A welcome to my friends:
This house is a home and a home's where I belong
Where the feelings are warm and the foundations are strong
If my soul has a shape, well, then it is an ellipse
And this slap is a gift
Cause your cheeks have lost their lustre
You know, your cheeks have lost their lustre
You know, your cheeks have lost their lustre
You know, your cheeks have lost their lustre, lustre, lustre, lustre
Take it back - send return out of time
Tape machine needs to be aligned

Aloha means goodbye, and also hello - its in how you inflect
Put the bark in the dog, and you've got a guardian
When the capitals s, it is followed by a t - and its probably me
And the tones are grouped in clusters
You know, the tones are grouped in clusters
Well the tones are grouped in clusters
You know the tones are grouped in clusters, clusters, clusters, clusters
Take it back - kiss me into the past
Lately never gonna last

Here's to all Metallica lovers (I saw a couple, might be more) : Dyers Eve.

Dear mother
Dear father
What is this hell you have put me through
Believer
Deceiver
Day in day out live my life through you
Pushed onto me what's wrong or right
Hidden from this thing that they call life

Dear mother
Dear father
Every thought I'd think you'd disapprove
Curator
Dictator
Always censoring my every move
Children are seen but are not heard
Tear out everything inspired

Innocence
Torn from me without your shelter
Barred reality
I'm living blindly

Dear mother
Dear father
Time has frozen still what's left to be
Hear nothing
Say nothing
Cannot face the fact I think for me
No guarantee, it's life as is
But damn you for not giving me my chance

Dear mother
Dear father
You've clipped my wings before I learnt to fly
Unspoiled
Unspoken
I've outgrown that f*cking lullaby
Same thing I've always heard from you
Do as I say not as I do

Innocence
Torn from me without your shelter
Barred reality
I'm living blindly

I'm in hell without you
Cannot cope without you two
Shocked at the world that I see
Innocent victim please rescue me

Dear mother
Dear father
Hidden in your world you've made for me
I'm seething
I'm bleeding
Ripping wounds in me that never heal
Undying spite I feel for you
Living out this hell you always knew
Freedom is to be able to go in any direction... So take the uncertain path.

Hoping for someone else who likes folk/sea shanties.  Now, for "Witch of the Westmoreland" by Archie Fisher.

Pale was the wounded knight that bore the rowan shield
Loud and cruel were the raven's cries that feasted in the field
Saying "Beck water, cold and clear, will never clean your wounds
There's none but the witch of the Westmoreland can make thee hale and sound"

So turn, turn your stallion's head 'til his red mane flies in the wind
And the rider of the moon goes by and the bright star falls behind
And clear was the paling moon when his shadow passed him by
Below the hills were the brightest stars when he heard the owlet cry

Saying "Why do you ride this way, and wherefore came you here?"
"I seek the Witch of the Westmoreland that dwells by the winding mere"
And it's weary by the Ullswater and the misty brake fern way
And through the cleft in the Kirkstane Pass the winding water lay

He said "Lie down, me brindled hound and rest ye, me good grey hawk
And thee, my steed may graze thy fill for I must dismount and walk,
But come when you hear my horn and answer swift the call
For I fear ere the sun will rise this morn ye will serve me best of all"

And it's down to the water's brim he's born the rowan shield
And the goldenrod he has cast in to see what the lake might yield
And wet she rose from the lake, and fast and fleet went she
One half the form of a maiden fair with a jet black mare's body

And loud, long and shrill he blew til his steed was by his side
High overhead the grey hawk flew and swiftly he did ride
Saying "Course well, my brindled hound, and fetch me the jet black mare
Stoop and strike, my good grey hawk, and bring me the maiden fair"

She said "Pray, sheathe thy silvery sword. Lay down thy rowan shield
For I see by the briny blood that flows you've been wounded in the field"
She stood in a gown of the velvet blue, bound round with a silver chain
And she's kissed his pale lips once and twice and three times round again

And she's bound his wounds with the goldenrod, and fast in her arms he lay
And he has risen hale and sound with the sun high in the day
She said "Ride with your brindled hound at heel, and your good grey hawk in hand
There's none can harm the knight who's lain with the Witch of the Westmorland!"

've got a good woman at home who thinks I do no wrong
But sometimes lord, she just ain't always around
And you know that's when I fall, I can't help myself at all
And I get whiskey bent and hell bound

Play me some songs about a ramblin' man, put a cold one in my hand,
'cause you know I love to hear those guitar sounds
Don't you play 'I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry' cause I'll get all balled up
inside
And I'll get whiskey bent and hell bound

Sure enough about closing time, (I'm) about stoned out of my mind
And I end up with some honky-tonk special I found
Just as sure as the morning sun come, thinking of my sweet girl at home
And I need to get whiskey bent and hell bound

Play me some songs about a ramblin' man, put old Jim Beam in my hand
'cause you know I still love to get drunk and hear country sounds
But don't you play 'Your Cheatin' Heart' cause that'll tear me all apart
I'll get whiskey bent and hell bound

Yeah, old Hank's songs always make me feel low down

"The Giant", based on the ancient Scots and Irish legends of the giant Fionn mac Cumhaill, anglicized in the 18th century as "Fingal".  In these legends, the Giant went to sleep in ages past, in a cave below the great palace of Dubh Linh (modern Dublin), and will rise to defend Eire at her greatest hour of need. This song is by Stan Rogers, based on an idea some have developed that Fingal abandoned the anglicized Ireland, and now dwells in Nova Scotia, because, at the time, there were far more Gaelic speakers in Canada than in Scotland and Ireland combined.

Cold wind on the harbour and rain on the road,
Wet promise of winter brings recourse to coal,
There's fire in the blood and a fog on Bras d'Or,
The Giant will rise with the moon.

'Twas the same ancient fever in the Isles of the Blest
That our fathers brought with them when they went west
It's the blood of the Druids that never will rest
The Giant will rise with the moon.

So crash the glass down, move with the tide,
Good friends and old whiskey are burning inside,
Crash the glass down, Fingal will rise,
    With the moon.

In inclement weather the people are fey,
Three thousand year stories as the night slips away.
Remembering Fingal feels not far away,
The giant will rise with the moon

The wind's in the north, there'll be new moon tonight,
And we have no circle to dance in her sight.
Light a torch, bring a bottle and build the fire bright,
The Giant will rise with the moon.

So crash the glass down, move with the tide,
Good friends and old whiskey are burning inside.
Crash the glass down, Fingal will rise,
    With the moon.

Cold wind on the harbour and rain on the road,
Wet promise of winter brings recourse to coal,
There's fire in the blood and a fog on Bras d'Or,
The Giant will rise with the moon.

No Queen yet? -gasp- That must change!

"The Show Must Go On" - Queen

Empty spaces - what are we living for
Abandoned places - I guess we know the score
On and on, does anybody know what we are looking for

Another hero, another mindless crime
Behind the curtain, in the pantomime
Hold the line, does anybody want to take it anymore

The show must go on
The show must go on
Inside my heart is breaking
My make-up may be flaking
But my smile still stays on

Whatever happens, I'll leave it all to chance
Another heartache, another failed romance
On and on, does anybody know what we are living for

I guess I'm learning, I must be warmer now
I'll soon be turning, round the corner now
Outside the dawn is breaking
But inside in the dark I'm aching to be free

The show must go on
The show must go on
Inside my heart is breaking
My make-up may be flaking
But my smile still stays on

My soul is painted like the wings of butterflies
Fairy tales of yesterday will grow but never die
I can fly - my friends

The show must go on
The show must go on
I'll face it with a grin
I'm never giving in
On - with the show -

I'll drop the bill, I'll overkill
I have to find the will to carry on
On with the -
On with the show -
The show must go on

The Arrogant Worms' "The Last Saskatchewan Pirate"

Well I used to be a farmer, and I made a living fine,
I had a little stretch of land along the city line
But times went by and though I tried, the money wasn't there
And bankers came and took my land and told me "fair is fair"
I looked for every kind of job, the answer always no
"Hire you now?" they'd always laugh, "we just let twenty go!"
The government, they promised me a measly little sum
But I've got too much pride to end up just another bum.

Then I thought, who gives a damn if all the jobs are gone?
I'm gonna be a PIRATE, on the river Saskatchewan!!!

And it's a heave-ho, hi-ho, comin' down the plains
Stealin' wheat and barley and all the other grains
And It's a ho-hey, hi-hey farmers bar yer doors
When ya see the Jolly Roger on Regina's mighty shores

Well, you'd think the local farmers would know that I'm at large,
But just the other day I saw an unprotected barge
I snuck up right behind and they were none the wiser,
I rammed their ship and sank it and I stole their fertilizer!
Bridge outside of Moosejaw spans a mighty river!
Farmers cross in so much fear their stomachs are all aquiver!
Cause they know that Captain Jack is hiding in the bay
I'll jump the bridge and knock them cold and sail off with their hay!

And it's a heave-ho, hi-ho, comin' down the plains
Stealin' wheat and barley and all the other grains
And it's a ho-hey, hi-hey farmers bar yer doors
When ya see the Jolly Roger on Regina's mighty shores

Well, Mountie Bobby chased me, he was always at my throat
He followed on the shoreline cause he didn't own a boat
But the cutbacks were a coming and the Mountie lost his job
So now he's sailing with us, and we call him Salty Bob!
A swingin' sword, a skull and bones and pleasant company
I never pay my income tax and screw the GST (SCREW IT!!)
Sailing down to Saskatoon, the terror of the seas
If you wanna reach the co-op, boy, you gotta get by me!

And it's a heave-ho, hi-ho, comin' down the plains
Stealin' wheat and barley and all the other grains
And It's a ho-hey, hi-hey farmers bar yer doors
When ya see the Jolly Roger on Regina's mighty shores

Well, the Pirate life's appealing but you just don't find it here,
I hear down in Alberta there's a band of buccaneers
They roam the Athabaska from Smith to Fort McKay
And you're gonna loose your stetson if you have to pass their way!
Well, winter is a'comin' and a chill is in the breeze
My Pirate days are over once the river starts to freeze
But I'll be back in springtime but now I have to go
I hear there's lots of plundering down in New Mexico!

And it's a heave-ho, hi-ho, comin' down the plains
Stealin' wheat and barley and all the other grains
And it's a ho-hey, hi-hey farmers bar yer doors
When ya see the Jolly Roger on Regina's mighty shores

And it's a heave-ho, hi-ho, comin' down the plains
Stealin' wheat and barley and all the other grains
And it's a ho-hey, hi-hey farmers bar yer doors
When ya see the Jolly Roger on Regina's mighty shores

When ya see the Jolly Roger on Regina's mighty shores!
