No, this is not a topic about Chinese Loyalist, although, at some time, he has been assimilated to the concept...this is a topic about sports, more exactly about football (the European kind), precisely about the strongest on-going competition at club-level being played at present in the world: The Champions League. And as we've had this this topic before, in the past, I have thought of reviving it, especially since my favorite team, Steaua Bucharest, has advanced last night to the third round of the qualifiers after a match of 'blood and sweat'. I know that some of you will enjoy talking about it again, for those who will not, say as Moma Khab does:...you're such guys... ;) :P

Steaua recover to send down Zagłębie
Wednesday 8 August 2007

by Paul-Daniel Zaharia from Steaua Stadium

FC Steaua Bucuresti edged closer to their second successive appearance in the group stage by coming from behind to secure a 3-1 aggregate win against Polish side Zagłębie Lubin.

Comeback
European champions in 1986, Steaua ended a ten-year wait to grace the UEFA Champions League proper last season and are one round away from repeating the feat after earning a third qualifying round tie against FC BATE Borisov. They had to work for their victory in Bucharest, however: Michał Stasiak levelled the aggregate scores on the half-hour before goals from Banel Nicolita and substitute Dorel Zaharia saw Steaua through.

Zapata mistake
Zagłębie had begun brightly and a minute after Manuel Arboleda was denied by the upright, Stasiak made it 1-1 on aggregate as he pounced on a goalkeeping error by Robinson Zapata. Parity was short-lived, though. Nicolita's free-kick crept inside the post for the equaliser, yet Steaua did not have it all their own way. Zapata was given plenty of opportunities to make amends for his mistake in the second half, denying Michał Goliński and Rui Miguel, while at the other end Adrian Neaga struck the crossbar. Zaharia finally sealed the win eight minutes from time to the relief of the home crowd.

err....thanks but no thanks.  :P I know you are seeking revenge for EURO 2000, on the other hand Steaua got so lucky with the draw for the final 3rd qualifying round, where they get to play Bate Borisov, the 2006 champions of Belarus, which is probably the easiest opponent they could have hoped for...so, ok. Bring on Chelsea!  :D

you know how modern football is, we can never know, the slightest weak team can win any king one. Can't believe we lost to Lyon last time, although Benfica wasn't playing that good.

Well anyway, i have bad experience with renewed teams, Benfica sold Simão Sabrosa (our best player) and bought a bunch of Latin Americans, from Argentina and Mexico i think...There was a good testing game a week or so ago, we won against one of our strongest rivals in Portugal (Sporting Clube Portugal). We can never know what this new team can do, so expect to be surprised in CL.

Forgot to ask, What do you think of Tiago? I like his way in both Lyon and Portuguese team, although not very experienced yet, but great player imo.

no matter how much i try not to fall on the vice, football is the mega male culture where women have limited access of understanding. An European male must at least support and watch their own nation's football games. The most skeptic won't fail a match of England - Portugal :p

Women have limited access of understanding?  Surely you jest.  Is there some gene that we're missing that would prevent us from being able to comprehend such a manly sport?  Or perhaps we just lack those particular brain cells?

Pardon me while I go knit something.  I'm a girl, you know.  We just can't understand such complicated things as sports.

football is not complicated  guys kicking on a ball? never said that.

Nuno Markle (Antena 3 - Portuguese radio) said to a girl: "Never stop playing football, female football is great to have a big laugh."
I hope i don't have to say he's humorist, nor i have to explain how i totally agree with him, or how women are aliens in football. Can't i stereotype and joke for a while?

Never said women can't understand sports...they are even better than men at...curling for example. Men couldn't clean the floor that much! :trout:

Oooooooh.  My pick...someone from Europe will beat someone else from Europe for the title.
"I believe every single person is extraordinary. The tragedy is that we
have a society where too many people never get to fulfill that
extraordinary potential. My view – the liberal view – is that
government’s job is to help them to do it. Not to tell people how to
live their lives. But to make their choices possible, to release their
potential, no matter who they are. The way to do that is to take power away from those who hoard it. To challenge vested interests. To break down privilege. To clear out the bottlenecks in our society that block opportunity and block progress. And so give everyone a chance to live the life they want." - Nick Clegg, Leader of the Liberal Democrats and Deputy Prime Minister of the United Kingdom
