WA Resolution (GA) at vote: On Genetically Modified Foods
« on: July 18, 2011, 08:41:13 AM »

GENERAL ASSEMBLY RESOLUTION AT VOTE
On Genetically Modified Foods

A resolution to reduce barriers to free trade and commerce.

Category: Free Trade
Strength: Mild
Proposed by: Mahaj WA Seat
Description:

The World Assembly
RECOGNIZING the existence and development of genetically modified foods,

AWARE that nations have different opinions on Genetically Modified Foods,

DEFINES Genetically Modified Foods as food or food products that have the genome of the organism directly manipulated through the process of genetic engineering via the introduction of foreign DNA or synthetic genes into the organism of interest,

DECLARES that all genetically modified foods crossing international borders be clearly labeled as being genetically modified,

CONVINCED that through proper labeling of genetically modified foods, less confusion will occur about the GM status of different foods, enabling trade to be quicker and more efficient,

DECLARES that this resolution applies to foods both genetically modified and foods genetically engineered,

CREATES the GM Foods Database as a gathering of genetically modified foods related information,

ENCOURAGES nations to contribute to this database,

STRONGLY URGES nations to abstain from imposing additional restrictions than in this Act on the import or export of genetically modified foods over natural food.

Vote.

----------------------------------------------

I myself agree - it is the minimum required to have GMO's labelled correctly and allow consumers to buy them or not by personal choice.

Very Anti-GMO personally, the capacity for cross contamination is a very real threat that when combined with a global trend towards homogenization of crops and the gene-pools there of leaves all at risk for massive problems. I am thoroughly against this measure due to its pressures to force countries into accepting trade of GMO's within their borders. Its nice to have them labeled as they truly are but the resolution should have more protections for those nations seeking a complete ban on GMO's.

Well except for that last paragraph that is quite bothersome, I don't see how it does press acceptance of GMO. I mean we cannot deny the fact that GMO food is already out there and some countries want it. In this respect, it is better that it be labelled in a specific way and that there be a data-base available so that in case of mischief, transparency is at hand. But, on the other hand, I'd support a ban anytime. I believe this is a resolution that qualifies under 'better this than nothing' and that it will need amendments.

EDIT: 1 day 10 hours left.

EDIT: 2 voted FOR. Thanks for voting in the poll.
