Elections!

Elections were held for the Senate and President on March 27, 2008. Of the twelve citizens who ran for Senate, the seven who were elected were:

Cordova I [ 13 ]   [12.87%]
HEM [ 13 ]   [12.87%]
Lethen [ 13 ]   [12.87%]
Pez201 [ 13 ]   [12.87%]
Pineapleboy [ 11 ]   [10.89%]
Danoboy63 [ 12 ]   [11.88%]
NasalivesII [ 7 ]   [6.93%]

In the Presidential elections, Nlhp and Cordova ran on the Active Civilian Party ticket, Pez201 and Lethen ran on the Blue Conservative Party ticket, Peaceful Llamas and Sunny ran on behalf of the Coalition of Progressive Socialists, and Verteger ran with an undecided running mate on the Independent ticket. The votes were:

Nlph/Cordova I (The Active Civilian Party) [ 9 ]
Pez201/Lethen (The Conservative Blue Party) [ 6 ]
Peaceful Llamas/Sunny (The Coalition of Progressive Socialists) [ 1 ]
Verteger/Undecided (The Independent Faction) [ 1 ]

The Cabinet that was quickly approved by the Senate is comprised of Nlhp and Cordova I as President and Vice President, HEM returning as Grand Admiral, Lethen reprising his role of Foreign Minister that he last held many terms ago, and Pineapleboy serving as a joint Culture Minister with Pez201. Danoboy63 and NasalivesII are also serving as joint Immigration Ministers.

Steady Recruitment, World Recognition Leads to Population Boom!

With a steady stream of recruitment over this past new term from many different regional members, not only has President Nlhp baffled former President Lethen, who couldn't get anyone to recruit no matter how he tried, but he has helped the region grow by almost 40 nations. The region was also featured on Today's Featured Region earlier this week, helping added almost 10 new nations. Whether or not this population boom will last is yet to be seen.

...But All Is Not Well.

This past week, however, has seen a malaise of sorts. While the Regional Message Board has been more active due to government-endorsed debates, the forums have been less active than usual although they are recovering. Some have attributed this brief malaise to the fact that HEM has to study for state-wide tests, NasalivesII's vacation to Miami, and the general busy nature of this past week. Regardless, the Cabinet has been consistently active, which is always a good sign.

E.P.A. a P.O.C.?

Discussions have begun over the future of the Europeian Public Assembly. While others applaud this assembly for being a good compliment to the Senate, others have grown tired of its inactivity and have cited that this is the second time a project of this nature has failed, the first time being the City Council. Talks have been going on about abolishing the EPA and instating some sort of bi-cameral legislature system, some people even suggesting a House of Lords to compliment the Senate. However, that is yet to be seen, as such decisions are not easy ones.

Laws Under Debate!

There are currently two bills under debate in the Senate. The first, the Activity of Government Officials Repeal, would repeal a bill that previously passed the Senate and set down guidelines about the Senate's power to remove government officials. Opposition to the bill argue that the bill only recommends removals, and cannot be enforced; thus, its bureaucracy. Supporters of the bill claim that it works against inactive government officials and that the Senate's weight will be all that is needed to make ministers and superiors decide to fire an inactive employee if they already have not done so.

The second bill, the Intelligence Act, completely re-establishes and re-structures the Europeian Intelligence Agency. However, there is hot debate over whether or not the Senate should have some sort of oversight so the EIA cannot do whatever it wishes without being impeded. Those who are against government oversight claim that an oversight committee could compromise security and slow things down, while those who ssupport government oversight claim that such a thing prevents the EIA and its Director from abusing its power.

Overtaken? Overtaken! Not Overtaken!

More than once since the last update, HEM has passed Lethen in post count and vice versa. Just today, Lethen passed HEM after HEM passed Lethen this morning. Will someone ever win? Unless one of them quits NS or dies, its doubtful.
