Best video game music
« on: October 04, 2007, 05:46:26 AM »
Does this topic belong on the Music board or the Video Game board?  Hmm.

The obvious guy to mention first is Nobuo Uematsu, who's composed a lot of great stuff for Square-Enix.  One of my other favorites is ZUN, the guy who single-handedly creates the Touhou Project series of games.  All sorts of influences go into his music, both western and eastern, and he has an excellent sense of how to fit a piece to suit the mood of its stage and the soundtrack as a whole to its game.

Lots of the Mega Man games on the NES had great soundtracks.  The sounds they could get out of that box...

I love the FF music, every so often if I'm bored while walking somewhere I'll hum the chocobo song and it seems to make the walk go faster =]

Zelda also had great music as did DDR  ;)

Harry Gregson-Williams (an Academy Award-winning composer) composed the amazing score for the Metal Gear Solid series.  I remember when MGS 2 was the first PS2 game I played on my PS2.  The intro, and the score for said intro, left my mouth agape.  The music is unbelievable.  Check it out.

I'll post it here later, but for now, go to downloads.khinsider.com/browse/game-soundtracks, look under Metal Gear, and download the Metal Gear Solid 2 theme.  I'll wait.

Zelda definitely has one of the best themes ever. Also Mario Bros. but discredited by not continuing to develop the same theme. EA Games normally have good tradition of good soundtracks, specially Medal of Honor.

Morrowind had good music but Oblivion makes much more sense, the soundtrack for Oblivion outruns most of other RP imo, very leveled with Final Fantasy (I was a big collector of FF media when i was younger, not really a player). But doesn't have expressive characterized theme, that can be a good thing for a type of game like that, but not very successful with several sequels, can you remember any TES music? Can you remember Zelda theme? if you can't, find it, listen, and you will sing it for half an hour in your head. Well maybe not that long... :h:

Tomb Raider also had good music, even their last game had great soundtrack...very entertaining but not very artistic. Happens in most of the games nowadays.

I stick with classics, Zelda gets my prize.

Has anyone here heard of either Video Games Live! or Play! A Video Game Symphony?  Both are events where a city symphony plays classic video game scores (and some new, possibly unreleased tracks as well; for example, I heard Lair and The Darkness when I went to Play! in August, which was before those games had been released).

I can personally vouch that Play! is exquisite and international; after the stop in San Jose, the show was traveling to Stockholm, Sweden.  If it ever comes near you (wherever you may be), you should definitely check it out.

There is also the Dear Friends! concert that is very similar to Play! and Live!, but it consists solely of music from the Final Fantasy series (and Nobuo Uematsu attends most of the concerts, apparently).

The Shin Megami Tensei games usually have good music, especially Nocturne.  Other than that, nothing that hasn't already been mentioned springs to mind just now.  Nobuo Uematsu's work, of course, I agree on.  FF, Zelda, Illusion of Gaia... all had good soundtracks.

I've been playing Persona 3 for a while now, and it's obvious that they put a lot of time and effort into the soundtrack.  Great stuff.

The Tetris and Dr Mario songs were pretty good, as was the intro for bubble bobble. From time to time I'll find myself humming those when I'm on a walk, if I'm rushing my walk it switches to the chocobo song  :)

Morrowind's soundtrack is eternally better than Oblivion's. Oblivion's is slow and too quiet. It could lull you to sleep. Morrowind had high crescendos, deep valleys, and is done wonderfully. I've actually replaced Oblivion's music with Morrowind's because I really can't stand it.
