80's Cartoons
« on: September 27, 2007, 06:00:47 AM »
Anyone else remember the old cartoons of the 80's like the Smurfs, Transformers, Voltron, Inspector Gadget, GI Joe and Dungeons and Dragons.

How do you feel that the nature of cartoons has changed in the last 20/30 years? Has the medium of children's animation improved, has it just become more of a sinister method of marketing or is it fading?

nice topic, congratz. Here we didn't had much American cartoons, mainly European, very sweet and sensitive. Smurfs came in collective books and not cartoons, Transformers Voltrons D&D never came, and GI Joe came late, originated a GI Joe mass, with toys and all. But still not very popular. Inspector Gadget was probably the only cartoon of all those that actually came into Portuguese TV and stayed there for a while, but came late and disappeared some time after.

Through my infancy the most popular kid shows were:
Power Rangers (god damn, i think we still have those, never ending power ranger series)
Dragon Ball (started to loose interest after Z series, GT was aimed for kids and i was growing up,still one of the most popular even in GT series)

what have changed...well i came to life in late 80's but cartoon industry grown slowly in the beginning of the 90's, still came to watch the evolution, now the majority of cartoons aim for masses and specialized in consumerism and actually loose all the moral value. 80s and 90s cartoons tried to teach us something, what does new cartoons, specially manga/anime, what do they teach? have the best machine to defeat your enemies? what enemies? oh bad boys...they are bad because they want to hurt people...or steal Pokemon...right...

You can see the evolution in what i know about american cartoons too. You have mickey mouse and some others teaching moral values, and you end up having tons of cartoons teaching that if you con more or better you will win over your enemies...enemies? there's always very bad boys. Bugs Bunny fighting the hunter in a fine example, very entertaining but...where does it go?

Here Smurfs are called Estrumpfes, i actually have large collection passed from my mother, she even had figures, but i think i lost some...

I know what you mean about the moral message being dumbed down. Like all the environmental cartons

The Smogies
Captain Planet
Toxic Crusaders
Bucky O'Hare
and so on...

Bucky O'Hare was loaded with morals, in the first episode when the human kid is trying to decide whether or not to help Bucky fight the Toad army (which was actually run by a large computer which used ToadTV to hypnotize the toads into buying - and I quote directly from the show - "Poorly Made, Overpriced useless consumer goods" and enslaving the aniverse (the animals universe) to produce those goods) the following conversation occurs:

Mom: What's the matter? Aren't you enjoying your veggie burger?
Kid: Mom, I have to help someone but it might be risky, I'm not sure if I should do it
Mom: Well some things are so important they have to be done, like making sure the whales survive or stopping nuclear power plants.

Now that's a moral stance for a cartoon to take. Unlike today's cartoons which mostly seem to be based in malls where kids walk around working in the malls to buy stuff in the same mall.

I also liked how in the old environmental cartoons the villains went around polluting, for the sheer joy of polluting.

Interesting side note about the smogies, it was the only cartoon to be named after the villains of the series.

As for anime, it really does just seem to be about fighting everything. Or teaming up with friends (one of whom usually wears googels on their forehead, but rarely over their eyes) to fight things... usually in a swirly background with generic techno music. What really annoys me are the card game based cartoons in which they spend 5 minutes talking about why they laid down the card that they did...

I think the ability to make an animated series on a single computer is probably to blame, back when you had to have Korean slaves draw the cartoons frame by frame you had to be more picky. Plus you got to see a lot more art errors, especially in GI Joe, there's scenes in episodes where the same person will be in both the foreground talking, and in the background standing around.  :D Catching art errors in old cartoons was half the fun.

Captain Planet, he's our hero
Gonna take pollution down to zero

He's our powers magnified
And he's fighting on the planet's side

Captain Planet, he's our hero
Gonna take pollution down to zero

Gonna help him put asunder
Bad guys who like to loot and plunder

We're the Planeteers
You can be one too
'Cause saving our planet is the thing to do!

Looting and polluting is not the way
Hear what Captain Planet has to say!

The Power is Yours!

P.S. Inspector Gadget was the best show ever made.  Penny should have gotten credit for everything; I think an entire generation of women are still bitter about what they saw happen in a cartoon as little girls.  ^_^

TMNT was an awesome show.

As for inspector gadget, did anyone else notice that every single episode worked on the same dynamics as a mad-lib? I think they must have written a single script and then just spent the rest of the time filling in the blanks.

Gadget, Penny and Brain are headed to [place] when the Chief disguised as a [noun] contacts Gadget and informs him that [over elaborate crime] is happening at [second place]. Gadget crumples the note exploding the chief and leaves Penny and Brain to investigate the crime.

Penny: "We have to follow Uncle Gadget"
Gadget arrives at [second place] and meets a MAD agent disguised as [someone appropriate to second place] and suspects nothing.
Gadget meets brain disguised as [noun] and thinks he is a MAD agent.
Gadget chases Brain and is captured and put in [over elaborate death trap] by the actual MAD agent.
Penny uses her laptop computer to hack the system and rescues Gadget and foil MAD
Chief shows up give credit to Gadget and Dr Claw escapes.
"I'll get you next time Gadget.... NEXT TIME!"

Gadget, Penny and Brain inform kids about [obvious safety tip that even the most retarded child already knows]

Something evil's watching over you
Comin' from the sky above
And there's nothing you can do
Prepare to strike
There'll be no place to run
When your caught within the grip
Of the evil Megatron
Transformers
More than meets the eye
Transformers
Robots in Disguise

Strong enough to break the bravest heart
So we have to pull together
We can't stay worlds apart
To stand divided we will surely fall
Until our darkest hour
When the light will save us all
Transformers
More than meets the eye
Transformers
Robots in Disguise
Transformers
Autobots wage their battle to destroy the Evil forces of the Decepticons

It's judgment day and now we've made our stand
And now the powers of darkness
Have been driven from our land
The Battle's over but the war has just begun
And this way it will remain 'til the day when all are one
Transformers
More than meets the eye
Transformers
Robots in Disguise
Transformers
Autobots wage their battle to destroy the Evil forces of the Decepticons
Transformers

Transformers PWNS all. Thanks for playing :P

All of the cartoons mentioned were great. However you all missed one.

Ducktales, anyone?
