El Laberinto del fauno
2006 - Guillermo del Toro
also known as:
Pan's Labyrinth

Guillermo del Toro has proven to be ranked high on my favorites.
For those who don't know, the Spanish 'lowlands', also known as Basque region, has some legends very similar to Ireland about fairies and stuff.  We all had Celtic inheritance, but amasingly there are very different kinds of it. Anyway, i can quote from imdb:
Quote
In the fascist Spain of 1944, the bookish young stepdaughter of a sadistic army officer escapes into an eerie but captivating fantasy world.
Pity there's too much curses and violence in the movie or it could be interpreted by children. But it's an allegory, for everyone.

This movie is highly recommended for those who like allegories, also those who like fairy tales, with fairies and all.

Is is one of my favorites!  Bit of a warning though, there is way more graphic violence than one might expect even with the disclaimers. The best kind of fairy tale - darkly imaginative and discomforting.  Subtitled.  Director's comments are awesome.

Yes very good movie. It's a deep allegory and violence and curses are there to make a stand in opposition to the fairy tale. Don't worry, just dummies, no real blood.

The creatures and very mysterious, not like modern fairy tales where everyone is very pretty, the guy that eats children is amasing.

That's what Del Toro called him.  I also just love the fact that they tried to make this as much of a Mexican effort as possible.
