Taco's Guide to making legible sentences:
Greetings class, and thanks for coming out! Today we're going to look at a horrible sentence and work on a way to clean it up. Now take a look at this sentence here:
no your wrong! it hurts only thing your downloding in into if it has viruses.Alrighty, so who can find the first problem? That's right, sentences start with a capital, so let's fix that first!
No your wrong! It hurts only thing your downloding in into if it has viruses.Next we'll fix the spelling so all the most obvious errors are fixed:
No your wrong! It hurts only thing your downloading in into if it has viruses. Now then, sentences have something called a "subject" this is what the sentence is talking about, in the example the subject is "it", not exactly very clear, is it now?
No your wrong! Illegal music downloading hurts only thing your downloading in into if it has viruses. Now we'll add some clarity to the "hurts only thing your downloading in into" part... and "in into" can go and we can organize this a lot better while we're at it:
No your wrong! Illegal music downloading only hurts the device your downloading the files into, if they have viruses.Handy little tip:
"Your" is a possessive (
Are you taking your bike to the store?)
"You're" actually means "You are", writters are lazy and will take any shortcut they can. (
You're going to die alone you realize?)
So we'll (we will, not "well") fix that too
No you're wrong! Illegal music downloading only hurts the device you're downloading the files into, if they have viruses. Then finally we'll fix up the punctuation:
No, you're wrong! Illegal music downloading only hurts the device you're downloading the files into, if they have viruses. Our new sentence is quite different, but much easier to read. Wouldn't you agree? Let's put them side by side for a comparison.
No, you're wrong! Illegal music downloading only hurts the device you're downloading the files into, if they have viruses.
versus
no your wrong! it hurts only thing your downloding in into if it has viruses.
*bell rings* Alright, class dismissed.
