Beaconsfield Conference
« on: August 18, 2007, 06:08:43 PM »
The conference room was ready.
Cherry wood lined the walls and floor, while the celling was decorated with a scene of a naval battle from the Victorious Revolution.
The cherry-wood conference table was decorated with the appropriate flags; at the head a small Commonwealth flag indicated the two seats reserved for the Consul of Foreign Affairs, Erik Destler, and Lord Protector Stephen Crofts.
Myrorian, Canadian, and Confederate flags to the left and right of the Inglo-Scotian banner marked the seats for those delegates.
At the other end, two star-spangled banners crossed, the civilian flag of the DS, thirteen alternating red and white stripes arranged vertically and fifty blue stars on a white field crossed with the military flag of the DS, thirteen red and white alternating stripes arranged horizontally, with fifty white stars on a blue field.
Destler, wearing a Brigadier-General's uniform, sat back in his chair at the head of the table, and took a drag of his fag, finishing it.
Crofts would be here momentaraly. He was doing the stately thing, welcoming the guests. Destler was waiting back, going over the terms of surrender the PI alliance would force upon the Democratic States of America.

General Frank Worthington, the new Supreme Commander of the Western Front, arrived by plane. He was dressed in his ceremonial red uniform. He wore a cavalier breastplate and a shining cavalier helment. He was driven to the conference hall where the surrender of the Democratic States of America would begin. He looked over the losses of his front. Thousands of Canadians and Quebecois would never see their nation's tall mountains and green valleys. One name stuck out. General Nicholas Brock, the former Supreme Commander of the Western Front. he had led an assault against a Yankee position and even though the battle went to the Canadians, they still lost the General. They arrived at the conference hall. The General was escorted to the meeting hall. A man in the familiar Commonwealth black uniform was waiting for them. The General saluted and shook the man's hand. "Lord Protector Crofts, I am General Frank Worthington, Supreme Commander of the Western Front and Commander of the Canadian Armies in America."

Crofts, dressed in the uniform of a Commonwealth Army Field Marshal saluted the Canadian General with the Commonwealth salute.
"Perhaps not the best thing to do" he thought to himself, a moment to late. Since the Victorious Revolution the Commonwealth salute, a clenched right fist to the left shoulder, had more or less been adopted by anti-monarchist groups worldwide.
"Not that it matter" Crofts reassured himself, "we're all allies here."

Following General Worthington's more traditional salute the Lord Protector shook his hand.
"Welcome to Beaconsfield General, I hope our combined business here is taken care of in quick order. Allow me to introduce Captain General Forrest Basil, just returned from the American front."

"If you would be so kind as to make your way into the conference room, Consul Destler will see to it you're accommodated" Crofts said, following Basil and Worthington's introductions.

Fredrika III got out of the driver's seat of the luxury sedan that was waiting for her. No motorcades to clog up traffic, just an armored car and a bodyguard following on a motorcycle. None were needed in the militaristic Inglo-Scotia, and that was fine with her. No house, no abandoned building, no warehouse, no little antique tricket shop could hide a would-be assassin. Fredrika coughed as she got out of the car. Everybody here smoked. It wouldn't be hard to imagine if people gathered underground to smoke. That's why the manholes always had "fog" coming out of them, she'd say to herself. Entering the conference hall, she saw the representative from Canada was already there. Peace conferences were always so somber. Sometimes she wished an Ozian would just jump through a window to liven things up, but then she stopped herself, realizing she'd probably get shot. Well, here they were. A couple of hours of discussing peace with an irradiated representative, a man hidden behind a cloud of smoke, and someone who refused to accept "you all" makes no sense. Well, better with y'all Pax Imperium members than the DSA.
