Title: Llanydern opens its doors to foreign commerce (trade conference)
Post by: LLANYDERN on March 26, 2007, 07:40:40 PM
OOC: If you want in PM me and I'll make it seem natural for you to come in (i.e. my people will discuss you or mention that your delegates should be arriving soon etc etc)

IC: "Well Jenat (Salnin Jenat council member for public order and defense) is everything in hand the delegates for the trade discussions are arriving tomorrow and I don't want the order to be a problem."
Salnin Jenat her new dress uniform (hah she thought when have the police troops ever had a dress uniform they've made it up special for the foreign bigwigs even came up with a dress eyepatch specially for her, it itched) "They have been making a ruckus about the the new rules on abortion and the reforms to the marriage laws" she replied to the small bald man sitting behind the desk carefully pruning the potted plant in front of him.
"Yes but what is new Jenat haven't I always told you look for what is new then you may find a better..."
"way of of answering the old" she finished "they have started to blame the foreigners saying that without them we wouldn't have these sinful ideas."
"Ah something new, and truth be told they are half right. We have these ideas all the time, some good some bad but often we do not use them as it will be difficult for us.  The order have always made it difficult but now we are stronger then them and so difficult thoughts are now not so difficult" muttered the old man half to himself.
"We'll manage we must for who else is there" the young soldier replied as she left.....

OOC: this is it for the night as I have lots of work to do before lectures tomorrow.

IC: "Are preparations for our guests ready?" asked the little bald man carefully shuffling paperwork on his immaculate desk.
"Everything we can be ready for we are ready for, we've got our people waiting for them with transport to the conference venue and the routes lined by uniformed and undercover officers, nothing can go wrong Chairman"
"My young man" the venerable gentleman addressed the young police command officer "when you think nothing can go wrong expect the worst.  Now we wait for our guests to arrive, I look forward to discussion with Uichi Ryu and C.L. especially, we must court our neighbors."

the uichi ryan osprey touched down with a perfect landing at a small field designated by the Llanydern govornment. out of the osprey stepped a rather hagard looking man. (see below)
he stepped out with an air of contained violence with an XM8 rifle strapped around his shoulder. he looked at his watch impatiently...

The young police officer ran up to the Osprey his hand on his peaked cap "I'm afraid sir that is illegal for non-citizens to carry weapons without license from the civil authorities, a license for a pistol or light automatic was issued but a rifle is not covered. If you wish to keep the weapon on your welcomed visit to our nation then we can wait and have the appropriate license approved.  However" he said breaking into a smile "I'm sure you will find your security more then adequate.  May I apologize for any inconvenience caused, but as an officer charged with upholding the law I must do my duty by it"

OOC: Sorry about this but to be in character for this rp I have to do this, I was expecting unarmed diplomats maybe a couple of body guards.  Hopefully this will not cause an incedent.

A few hundred miles away, right at the southwest borders of Llanydern, an out of place caravan of brown weary cows appear at a shabby, rusted down border guard post. Two wide-eyed guards slinging FAL rifles stared at the Oriental man standing in front of them.

He was dress in a beige robe studded with copper buttons and wearing a wide hemp straw hat that protected his rice white face from the sun. His clothing and body were battered with dust and dirt, as was others in his group. The man glanced down at the rifles, and then back up to look at both guards.

"Hey,...you guys got any water?" he said, giving them a friendly smile.

One of the guards showed the rest of the caravan to the place the horses used for patrols were watered, the other guard wearing the mottled uniform of the border guard threw the strange man his canteen.
"Not normal to have people come up to patrol centers, least not unless they have less then peaceful intent in their heads.  But then you don't really look like a local, more like some of the guys we have from the coast, which if you are your sure far from home.  Fancy telling the tail of it?" he rambled leaning on his rifle propped against a rock scanning the horizon.

Julia Annius prepared herself for the trade conference. She was an Agent of the Nerdic Food Importation Company, and had lived in this nation since they signed on as a partnership with Nerdic. It was an alright land she picked up the language (nerdic agents are all people skilled at linguistics and law). Gathering her stuff she walked towards the door to head to her transportation.

ooc:Where is this conference being held, and who does Julia work closest with, or what group. This is so she acts appropriately.
Julia is a rather bland looking woman, but very professional. physically she looks like the people from southern France

"Well I'll be doggone..." said the border guard. "An emissary coming all the way out here...and you're telling me you walk all the way here?!?"

"Yes, we left one month ago from our city of Li Yai," Gen Wai reply. He and his group had been walking westward for fourty-one days and nights, crossing the expanse of wilderness between the Chinese Loyalist State and Llanydern.

"You chose a hell of a trail to track through, I assumed that most nations fly in with their fancy Ospreys or some other piece of junk that I can't afford with my paycheck," said the guard. He took a long drink from his canteen, the water leaking onto his brushy cheeks and falling onto the ground in droplets.

"Our country is too poor for these things you speak of,...I dare say that your paycheck might be more than mine..." Genwai said as he washed his dirty hands with the canteen water. "For most parts, we had a smooth trip...just some issues with water."

The second guard was in a similar state of disbelief. "Dam, couldn't you have a least drove here in your car?" he blankly asked. The ambassador looked at him uneasily.

"I...never seen an automobile in my life", he silently said. Both guard stared blankly at his answer. "There are no cars in DCL, most people move by ox or horse. Even if I had a car, there's no gas to run it."

The three of them join in laughter. The ambassador's attendants looked from outside, musing over their employer's companionship with foreigners. When the laughter stopped, they return to filling their water cans.

"Well Ambassador, we better get you to that conference," the older guard said.

"Are we close to the capital?"

"Only if you have wings and can fly at the speed of sound," the guard reply. He took up his rifle and slung it onto his back. "Come on, let me show you my pickup."

The young ambassador busted out a gleeful smile. "You mean...you have a truck here?"

"Sure do", the old guard grinned.

The guard led Gen Wai to a spot behind the stable. He removed the green canvas covering the old battered pickup truck. The ambassador's eyes shot out wide in pure disbelief and awe.

"We don't drive this around much, we only got two tanks of gas in the whole place. Better to use horses to move around here." He took out a pair of brass keys. "Usually, I'm not allow to leave my place of duty, but for you Mr. Ambassador, I'm sure headquarters won't tear apart my ass for this violation." He signals the other guard, "Chuck, stay here and watch the others! Make sure Baker's team doesn't come back here and starting shooting at them or the cows." The guard pull open the door to the driver's side and slided in. "Come on, we got a couple of hours of driving ahead of us."

The ambassador stood still, looking down at the chipped hood of the truck.

"Well, what you waiting for?"

The ambassador looks up at him blankly.

"How do I get in?" he asks.

Opening the door "you jump in the cab with me, any of yours with a need to be coming best scram into the back there, mind they don't mess with the cannon" he warned pointing towards the heavy machine gun mounted over the cab "its old and a mite finikity and we don't want accidents now."

"I'll get you to thranner they'll take care of what to do then, probably put you on the train or something, maybe even put on one of those new helios for you" then speaking to the truck as he tried to start it "gets thou going thou lazy baggage, hast thy no sense" and at that the engine started "all aboard whos going, we've got a fair ways to go"

Nerdic, she'd be working with the council for foreign food stuffs (I'm going to start writing all these down) and the conference is being held in the council building in Aberystwyth which is the administrative hub of my nation. It'll be in the council room (the room in which council meetings are held) where there is provision for private communication between attendees and translation services, this trade conference will be headed by the chairman of the council who's name/title is Evoleerf Xab Erretnorb but is mainly called chairman by all.  He is a small man bald except for the odd wisps of grey hair and is very old, he wears tinted glasses and in his full regalia of office has been described (and would admit this freely) that he looks rather like a monkey in a dress, he is also slightly hard of hearing (though only it seems when it is convenient for him not to have heard what you said).

Ferika Wix had never flown in the 25 years of her life. It was a nonsense, everybody knew those vehicles were safe, and there were those statistics about the probability to crash a plane being significantly lower than the chances to have a car accident, but she was scared of flying and nothing was going to change that.

She had tried to change the mind of Wise Matju and arrange a voyage on a ship, but the member of the Committee of the Wise was a hard-nosed man and insisted that she would travel by plane to the trade conference. The young ambassador, whose job was only two days old, could do nothing but obey.

So there she was, the only passenger in the Golden Dragon diplomatic plane, crossing the clouds in a sky that matched both her dress and her eyes. In front of her, an open laptop showing a wordprocessor on the screen, with a few ideas she had written down during the flight. If she had only had the time to prepare something for the conference... But she had been sent there with the aim of listening, rather than speaking, as she had been told when she was hired; perhaps her second pair of ears, a birthday present by her father, had helped her job application to be accepted.

Once more, she looked through the window. Behind the pale reflex of gold-framed white face, she could see and endless white carpet of clouds, as a field of cotton. She checked her watch; they should be already there.

She was about to go to the cabin and ask the pilot when the plane suddenly stopped in the air and vertically descended. The ambassador abruptly removed her eyes from the window and covered her face with her long fingered hands, in an exaggerated attempt to prevent her eyes to glimpse anything. The descent lasted a few minutes, but it was like an eternity for her. Finally, she felt the relieving stillness of the plane, engines off.

"So Antonio Largiou is going to be at this conference?" Henry Adams asked Alexander Wallis as their plane was en route to the Llanydern capital.

"That's what I've heard."

Henry Adams, President of the Mercantilist Brewing Co., Secretary of Commerce Alexander Wallis, and Ambassador William Jackson, were cutting up in the back of the plane enjoying the first test cigars of the Mercantilist Brewing Co.'s newest tobacco line Loyalist Standard, and sharing a glass of Old Mercantilism whiskey. Adams had brought boxes of Mercantilism Standard cigars as well as a case of Old Mercantilism bottles to hand out to the delegates.

"Good, good, good. I'm really interested in Nerdic's business model. I like where they're going with it," Adams said. "Anyway, what do ya'll think of this new tobacco."

"Tastes the same," Jackson said.

Adams, clearly displeased asked Wallis.

"What do you think Alexander?"

Wallis took a long puff.

"Yeah, about the same."

"Well damn it, don't go spreading that around."

They had left Decartes earlier that day after meeting with President Washington and were scheduled to land in a few hours.

"Hey! there's no smoking back here," Gregory Defensor, President of the Easteros Merchant Co. said as he emerged from the front of the plane and lit up a cigar sitting down next to Adams as they all shared a laugh.

"What do you think of these cigars Greg?" Adams asked.

Defensor took a puff.

"Tastes the same."

Jackson and Wallis chuckled. This was the Merchant delegation.

OC: I can't seem to figure out the personality of the guard, is he using a southerner's accent? And what's a thranny?

The metal frame of the pickup vibrates violently as it cuts across the rough terrain of the countryside. The cab is fill with the noise of the loud rumbling, follow by spiffs and coughs of the engine. The ambassadors peers out the window at the tranquil scenery of rich green pastures and lush meadows. Strange trees dotted the landscape. All seem quiet and peaceful, a sharp contrast to the shaking of the pickup truck.

The ambassador has chosen to ride alone with the guard, leaving his attendants back in the border patrol post. They had no role in the diplomatic trade conference that he was to attend, plus most of them were reluctant to ride on the mechanical beast. They did not know what they were missing, he thought.

To the ambassador, the truck had been nothing less but exhilarating. He was amazed with everything about the wonderful machine, the sound of the engine, the leather seat, the horn and radio, and the sheer speed and power that seem to make this frame of metal come alive. The truck matched an horse in speed, but its stride was much more graceful. It was alot for a man of Gen's background to take in, it was one of those experience a person remembers for the rest of his life.

The weather was supposedly hot and humid, but the breeze that rushed from the open windows kept the interior of the vehicle comfortably cool. It was the closest thing to an AC that the old truck could afford. The young ambassador turns to the old guard.

"Where is this "thranny" your taking me?" he asked.

The Uichi Ryan looked at the soldier with a chillingly neutral stare. he responded with a voice that was like gravel, "i'll wait for a license. i don't go anywhere unarmed, and its always good to have another ready warrior around. right kid?" he then lit a black cigarette that came out of a pack with a jolly roger displayed across the front.

Livia Drusilla Arrived at the building, and walked in. She knew where she was going, she had recieved a tour when she first arrived, she spoke into an attachment in her ear (blue-tooth)."This is Agent Livia Drusilla of Llanydern, please connect me to the department of foreign relations. Thanks."

Her folders shuffled around in her hands, her laptop case at her waist "Hello, this is Agent Livia Drusilla, may i talk to VP of Foreign Affairs. Thank you."

She keeps walking looking about to make sure she doesn't walk into anyone "Hello Mam, I am here to inquire if anyone else will be coming to this conference or will I be playing Double roles of insure the happiness of our partner and representing Nerdic."

she gets near her end goal

"Yes, thank you mam"

She touches her ear piece and ends the conversations, and arrives at the conference room.

OOC: CL he's not southern he's speaking with a kind of collection of accents molded together (he's been on border watch a long time so as the borders have expanded he's picked up bits of the new accents) think a mixture of Geordie, Scottish and Welsh borders.  Thranner is a place, its the nearest permanent settlement and also the location of the local command post (where you are at now is a way station for patrols along the border (think like a small post for about 20 men with supplies for any who need it)).

"Thranner" corrected his companion "its the nearest thing to civilization we've got out here, it's got admin and supply and more importantly a squawk box that can reach wheres it's useful" gesturing to the radio.  "They'll be able to sort you out, well good like.  Beautiful country ain it plan to gets me some land with me pay off when I retires, during the war I was in the mountains and saw enough to make me never wanna leave the flat again." In the distance a small but ugly town nestled in the shadow of the mountains....

OOC: no worries its fine I know sometimes I'm not on here that often (what with work) sometimes it can't be helped.

The officer's smile disappeared and in overly pronounced tones he replied "you'll notice sir that I am a decorated veteran of the civil war, I fought for 15 years, I was at the storming of Verdat and the cleansing of the pain houses.  Now I'm an easy going sort but my advice for you is do not talk to our commander like this for she is not.  If you'll excuse me I have matters to attend to, when your license arrives my men will escort you to the nearest train station and then from there to the council chambers.  Good day to you sir!" and with that he turned about and angrily stomped off.

OOC:I'm not planning on having anything else happening so if you want to skip to the capital to meet the chairman that would be good, if you want to do the journey then the ground your going over is flat and boring to begin with before going into the forested hills, the trains are old fashioned but new and are steam powered, the mountains are forested but the higher portions are quite bleak, you'll see ruined medieval fortifications dotted about and also major mining operations going on, the capital is small (think about 20-30k people) and on the shore of a large freshwater lake (long but not wide its in a valley), its quite pretty with a mixture of various styles, on the hill is a group of buildings with a small (but highly noticeable) bell tower (the bell is not enclosed its basically just somewhere for the bell to be its rung from the ground, every so often the bell is rung and it echoes across the town.

Happy to be on the ground again, Ferika closed her laptop, checked her crown-shaped hairstyle on a nearby mirror and left the plane. The landing track was almost empty, there was only another plane appart from hers, and a policeman arguing with a marine with an XM8 rifle. One hundred meters farther or so, there was a building, presumably where the trade conference was going to be hold, so she calmly walked there and asked the first uniformed man she found by the doors.

"Excuse me, sir", she said in a soft voice, "I am an attendant to the trade conference. Could you tell me how to get to the room where it is to be hold?"

you have made a mistake here, the conference is in my capital which is many miles away from the air field.  Secondly I asked people to PM me if they wanted to be involved so that I could introduce them.  Some haven't but they've done it in such a way as to not cause problems (see mercantilist states and nerdic), so if you leave it open its fine but pm is still prefered, please edit it.

"Well here we are Ambassador", said the old guard as they stop near a large concrete compound in the middle of town. Several machine guns bristle from the walls and windows. It had the smell of oily food,...then again so did the rest of the town. From the gate, three guards walked up to the pickup. Two were carrying FAL rifles, but one was carrying a bulky looking sub-machine gun.

"What's your business here?" the one with the sub-machine gun asks. His face was much more batter and mature looking than the other two, a sign of senior-ship was evident. "I have an emmisar-ee from the Domin-ion of...what was it again...o ya...Chinees Loyar-list," the old guard replies. "The fellow's late for some bat-shit conference back in Aberystwyth."

The gate guard's impression was blank. He simply reply,"I need to see your papers, Mr. Ambassador."

The ambassador reaches into his satchel and pulls out a stack of typed paper held together with a clip. He hands the stack to the gate guard. He watch patiently as the man flicker through the pages with his course fingers. He looks up at Gen, than back at the papers. Finally, he hands the stack back to Gen.

"Everything seems legitimate, please come with us Mr.Wai." The gate guard opens the passenger door for the ambassador. Gen slides out to touch his feet with ground, it felt stiff from the hours of sitting in the truck.

Before being escorted away, the ambassadors turns back toward the old guard. He gives him one last smile at the man. "I never got your name", Gen said. The old guard looks at him for a few seconds before grinning. "T-he name's Billy,...Billy Irkin", he answers.

In the horizon, the ember sun begins to set...

After such a terrible flight, the train travel was a pleasant trip and the landscape had old castles, like in the tales Ferika had been told in her childhood, so she kept all the time looking through the window.

So she finally left the train. The capital was nicely small, and she felt tempted to go to the council building on foot, but se finally got a taxi which lifted her to the building after several suspicious curves. She paid the driver and walked to the entrance.

"Excuse me", she said to the first person she met inside, "Could you tell me how to get to the council room? I am going to the trade conference, chaired by...", she rolled her eyes for a few seconds, trying to remember, "Evoleerf Xab Erretnorb".

The delegates from the various nations slowly arrived the delegates from Nerdic and Kalvskar arriving together and talking energetically about root vegetables, the four members from the Mercantilist States began "networking" as they insisted on calling it while Richard Black sat and morosely smoked through his pack of cigars.   They then waited wandering around talking among themselves until unnoticed by most a small Asian man with a slightly travel worn appearance arrived, after he had entered a door to the left of the central lectern opened and an old man supported by a young woman wearing a uniform very similar to the police troops who had been unobtrusively there since they had entered Llanydern.  He is small and bald with wire rimmed spectacles and is wearing the rather plain robes of the civil service, she is taller (though still quite small) with an eye patch and her uniform has a red arm band which is stained and freyed, she has several medals.  Upon gaining the lectern the man begins "Welcome favored guests I am Evoleerf Xab Erretnorb and I won't go into why we are here as I do not want to insult your intelligence, shall we begin?"

Gen Wai felt uneasy being surrounded by the sheer number of foreigners in his presence. He could see the many of the prominent delegates were dressed in formal wear that was unfamiliar to him. His robes stood right out in this crowd of suits and uniforms. The strong aroma of burnt incense coming from one of the delegates did not help to ease his nervousness.

He was immediate relieve when little bald elder with rimmed spectacles entered with an uniformed lady...with an eye patch?...the women of this country sure dress strange, he thought. That began the start of the conference. The bald elder greeted the guests, and then implied the start of the meeting.

"Very well, though I would like to finish for today by 5 so that we may all have a chance to prepare for the formal dinner tonight" the old man muttered before stumping off to talk to general Wai "its nice to see I'm not the only one in robes, I've never seen the advantage of these... suits I believe their called, with robes no one can see what you are carrying which" as he drew out a hip flask he smiled at the general before taking a gulp "is always useful.  Ah I see that Largiou fellow has turned up so we may start".

Having stumped back to the podium, Evoleerf began "Now as you I'm sure know, we have recently come out of a messy, very messy civil war and we are getting ourselves back on our feet.  And I feel we are doing quite well, however we feel that through trade with the wider world we can do better, as well as do better by those nations that wish to do well by us.  We are not a rich nation in money, but we are in minerals and in the hardworking ingenious people who make up our population.  If you are in need we will help you as much as we are able, and we hope the same will be felt in return, this is the Llanydern way.  Our technology has stalled, there was little or no development during the civil war and if we are to join the greater world then this must change.  We offer you minerals and lumber and petrochemicals, what we ask for is machinery, experts, professors, doctors, educational materials and medical equipment.  We ask for tools and advice and in return you will be paid, and paid well, we also offer free trading licenses to your nations in gratitude (though we expect the same the other way around of course)." with his speech over he sat down and waited a faint smile playing on his lips....

Without knowing, Gen Wai was the first one to step up. All eyes were on the man from the Loyalist State, the fate of his country's mission on his shoulder.

"As the representative of the humble Dominion of Chinese Loyalist, we would be most honour to open our borders to Llandydern trade." He recites what he had been practicing for the the past three months. "We hope that our two nations may share a bond of friendship and openness, to facilitate both the economic and political well-being of our countries, for the good of the state and people."

A mottle of silent applause came and went. The old man simply nod in acknowledgment. Gen smiles, then takes his seat. His nerves had calm....

His little speech was merely an anecdote to what he had came to do. He had much to do for his country. The mines at Ni Yai needed foreigners with technology to exploit. Acquiring weapon systems was also a high priority. The old man spoke of the backwardness to his country...simply ironic when comparing the difference in advancement with the DCL and Llandydern. They could manufacture cars and firearms, while Loyalists are still riding animals and weaving clothes by hands. Yes the clothes...he had heard that these foreigners could weave a hundred foot of cotton in mere minutes with just one machine. Perhaps later, he would sample the local clothing of this country...

Antonio stood, the agent next to him sat silently his secretary writing down everything that was said. "We at nerdic have already partnered with your fine nation, our business family brings the vast masses of food and harvest the world over to your nation. We also have plans to build a vast transport rail system connecting both seas your nation rests on. This rail system will bring much foreign investment and involvement to your nation. Nerdic will also  be glad to aid by way of our Agent already part of your system who sits next to me. She will aid you by way of our vast contacts and resources to bring foreign trade and technology into your nation."

Black sat there listening carefully to the foreign buisness people. such aspirations in so many minds. he then very gruffly stated, "I was sent by the uichi ryan govornment to see what it is that your nation is seeking, and if you are seeking anything we can provide then we hsall be more than happy to provide it at affordable pricings. also i am here for my own buisness, black death cigarettes, as CEO i have full authority and i have decided that we want to set up our shops and perhaps some farms and factories here in this fine place."

So that's Richard Black, Henry Adams thought to himself as they took a seat near the back of the room. Adams pulled out a Mercantilist Standard cigar and put it in his mouth, drawing a dirty look from one of the Llanydern representatives. He then took it out of his mouth and put it back in his pocket.

As he looked around the room he recognized Antonio Largiou of the Nerdic Food Importation Company. He hadn't met the man, but had seen a number of pictures of him. And he was sharply dressed as usual. He also saw a man dressed in a robe, a rough looking fellow, and a pretty girl.

They waited to see how the meeting progressed. A Llanydern representative had told them as they entered the building that a formal dinner had been scheduled for 5 tonight.

OOC: Edited my previous post for continuity, I had skimmed the thread hastily before I posted and missed that you introduced my delegates as at the meeting already.

Henry Adams looked over at the Llanydern official who had given him the dirty look before who was apparently surprised by the minister's comments. Adams proceeded to light up his Mercantilist Standard cigar and offer one to the other delegates seated near him.

"This discussion of tobacco intrigues me. Allow me to introduce myself, I am Henry Adam of the Mercantilist Brewing Company," Adams said as he rose to speak. "We are a Mercantilist States based business with assets across Taijitu, and we are interested in expanding our business into Llanydern. We offer a variety of products including an assortment of brews and liquor, as well as tobacco products," directing his last comments towards the other delegates, catching the interest of Richard Black.

"We would like to establish a distribution center in this fine capital of yours; and we of course will limit our selection to only alcoholic products. Secondly, although tobacco is illegal, we wonder if you would allow for the cultivation of tobacco for export. We would use only local labor. Additionally, this Tanaga Weed very intriguing to me, and I would love to share a bowl with you and explore the possibilities of acquiring some sealand for its mass production and export. I believe that there may be a market across Taijitu for such a fine product."

Gregory Defensor of the Easteros Merchant Co. continued.

"I am Greg Defensor of the Easteros Merchant Company, and thank you again for hosting this conference. We own a construction business, among other industries, and we can assist in helping your nation develop infrastructure. Additionally, we operate a textile business and can establish a textile factory here. We would hire only local labor and purchase only fabrics grown in your nation (OOC: unsure of your resources, the resource list has gone MIA). Also, we have partial ownership of Merchant Oil and, although I would have to consult with the Board of Directors first, they would most likely be interested in establishing oil rigs here to help facilitate production and export."

Richard Black smiled at Henry Adams now here is a man worth talking to. he lit up a mercantalist cigar and offered Henry and Gregory a Black Death Cigarette each. Underneath the cigarette handed to Hery was a note reading:

we need to talk about future dealings between our companies
-Black- (insert jolly roger)

He then with  great pride said, "The Education Systems in Uichi Ryu are among the finest in Taijitu, we do have more teachers than we realy need. Perhaps we ould arrange for some of them to be contracted as teachers throughout the education system here as well as placing in a system that will suit your nation better. Actualy i need to know if education here is privatised or provided. If it is allowed my company would be more than happy to build some private institutions of higher learning. Does any of this appeal to you?"

OOC: As Tananga weed is not on my resource list I was just adding it in to add flavor for my nation.  Wool is the main textile in my nation.

IC: "Well gentlemen your offers are most welcome, firstly to mister Black all education is delivered by the state, though at the moment the Holy Orders offer some education however this is being discouraged.  Education is split into the civil service colleges, medical colleges and technical colleges, there is also the University of Aberystwyth which specializes in law, international politics, Biology and Physics.  To mister Adams and mister Defensor it is perhaps best I explain how our industry works, it is on a sharing system between the workers and the body of the other owner, which at the moment is the state.  Mostly we are asking for machinery to update factories that already exist."

OOC: well you don't necessarily have to have it listed on your resource list as a narcotic, since you established it as a seaweed. And I like the flavor  ;), hence why I'd like to "seafarm" it.

IC:

Hmm...I thought this was a trade conference, Ambassador William Jackson thought to himself. He glanced over at Secretary of Commerce Alexander Wallis who he saw roll his eyes, and he chuckled to himself. He knew Wallis had little patience for socialist systems.

"What about trade?" Jackson asked. "Such as tariffs?"

OOC: my nation is not communist it is socialist which is a transitional phase before the stateless communism is developed, the modifications I have made to my state in relation to traditional socialism are so that it can last the long haul in competition with capitalist states.

IC: "My nation doesn't have tariffs believing in free trade, however we do have strict laws about exploitation and we refuse to trade with companies that do not recognize real unions"

"Good to hear," Jackson said. "The Mercantilist States is the same way."

"We would be interested in establishing a distribution hub here," Adams said again. "If your state-employee arrangement doesn't work with foreign companies, then we can import our own labor force to run the hub. The same would go for any potential tobacco and sea farms."

That's a bold offer, Defensor thought to himself. The cost alone of importing and paying Mercantilians to run the hub and farms would probably negate any profits that could be had. Especially from a nation that doesn't even allow tobacco, his staple product. Had Adams run some numbers before he came...

"The Empire of Kalvskar leaves most of the labour rights to the freedom of contract between employer and employee", Ferika said in a soft voice, "But our firms tend to create satellite companies in foreign states in order to follow their laws, so we could establish branches in Llanydern following your type of contract".

As she spoke, the ambassador noticed something unusual in the young policewoman-like dressed girl beside Evoleerf : she had an eyepatch! The default Kalvskarian policy in international relations was to avoid... politically incorrect issues, like organ trade and consumption. However, that woman looked like many Kalvskarians who had sold one of their eyes for a large amount of runes, despite the fact that she had not found anything in the Internet or the government databases about an organ market in Llanydern. She took a mental note to investigate further on that; she could have found a potential customer (or provider) for the organ market.

"However", she continued her speech, "we do not require labour importation. Our branches will recruit people and outsource without nationality discrimination... unless forbidden, of course. Do you have any restrictions on workers or outsourcing from other states of Taijitu? Does the 50% collective ownership apply to outsourcing?".

Although it was contrary to the interests of the Kalvskarian government to loose working population, it was allowed, and in fact it was an income source. And outsourcing could be very interesting.

Is this guy for real, Wallis thought to himself referring to Evoleerf. He was struggling to control himself. He looked over at Adams who was busy scribbling away on his notepad.

"Ok...I have a proposal," Adams said as he finished writing and looked up. "We in the Mercantilist States have never heard of such a system, and wouldn't know where to begin. However, your government seems to adept at running it, thus...

"We will allow your government to appoint a representative to our Board of Directors and your nation will be given control over 50% of our interests within your nation. Consequently, you will be entitled to a share of our total annual profits equal to whatever percentage that makes up of our total assets. You will also have voting power on our Board of Directors.

"Said representative will be responsible, or responsible for appointing, someone to manage the assets of the Mercantilist Brewing Company in Llanydern, and will be based out of Aberystwyth. We will hire only domestic labor, and said representative can ensure that the 50% ownership, through shares or otherwise, is distributed equally to all workers who are hired. Additionally, we will rely on said representative to ensure the supply of Tanaga Weed, of which we will set the price based on worldwide supply and demand.

"However, we also reserve the right to sever this arrangement if it proves to be unprofitable."

Wallis, Defensor, and Jackson all looked at Adams speechless. Wallis, for one, had never heard of such an arrangement ever being attempted.

"As far as tobacco," Adams continued. "We can wait and see how this arrangement works out, and your government can decide from there whether or not to grant us an exception."

Our industries are also looking to receive help from Llanydern. We wish to acquire simple propeller aircraft manufacturing data and machinery. We would like to create a student exchange program where our graduates can study in your universities to gain more knowledge of your superior technologies.

We would also like to introduce a draft for a military cooperation treaty that would strengthen both our border."

The Ceo Smiled "Nerdic has so far had a very fair trade with your nation, we have imported many thousand tons of food into and out of your nation by our partnership. We find that our agreements with your nations have so far been of the best possible, we hire your locals and rent out your docks and then sell our foods to your markets and our concern keeps turning its vast mechanics. I wish to once again state that if you ever wish something from us the agent in your nation will do all we can to make you happy."

He turned a smile on his face to the Reps from the M. States "Our Dealings with you have been of great profit, and remember you have full access to our vast transport system."

with this he turns to the local leaders "A transport system that includes a proposed partnership with my Corporation and your government to build a rail cutting across your fine nation."

If I knew weapons were allowed here, I would have brought a pair of tough bodyguards, she thought, aware of her lack of defence, I don't even know if my mobile phone works here, she wondered, taking her terminal from a pocket in her light blue tunic and checking the screen for signal.

Need you in Vusun. AW

Jackson whispered something to Secretary Wallis and then quietly excused himself from the conference.

"Mr. Black, I've been wanting to talk to you. Mind if I grab one of those?"

Adams took a cigarette and lit it up, coughing on the first puff. They don't call it Black Death for nothing.. He looked into an empty conference room.

"And how bout those socialists, damn they're a handful. Let's talk in here."

Adams headed into the room, followed by Black.

"nothing wrong with socialism, mixed economies can be quite effective..... just the way these people are handling it.... i won't be surprised if Llanydern is a failed state within ten years. however..."

he paused to take a drag and lean against a wall. i realy admire the quick reaction, must be as fed up with this joke of a conference as i am.

"we are to be discussing buisness... i as CEO of Black Death world class cigarettes am quite interested in working something out with getting our product into the Mercantalist distribution hubs. our cigarettes are currently quite popular in the East and in places like Bustos. however you have a far broader market that seems to span the globe. how could we utilize this to both our best advantage."

OOC: we hijacked this thread; bring Larigou into our meeting. I wanted to have Adams ask Larigou if the Mercantilist Brewing Co. have access to your rail network (and other logistical things) for use by the MBC.

IC:

"I had the same thoughts," Adams said. "We recently just worked out an arrangement with Staropaamen brewery in Takasia to do the same thing."

Black listened intently.

"Cigarettes are a new venture for us. I personally hate them, no offense, but I admit there's a market for them." Adams put the cigarette out, and pulled out some Alland Perique cigars and offered one to Black who took one.

"Thanks," Black said.

"These are our newest cigars, Alland Perique tobacco, grown in Takasia."

Black lit up the cigar and offered a light to Adams.

"The arrangement we came to with Staropaamen was that we acquired a controlling interest in their company," Adams continued. "And in return they got significant holdings in the Mercantilist Brewing Company and the right to appoint a representative to our Board of Directors. We can arrange something similar for your company. We are most interested in expanding the operations of your tobacco farms and would like to add cigars and tobacco of Uichi Ryan origin to our product lineup. We'll create a new line for your cigarette products. I believe this could be a profitable venture for both of us."

Larigou walked out of the conference hall, it wasn't going anywhere, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a small pipe like object, lighting it took a short smoke and leaned his head back "This is moving slower then the ozians, they at least got started"

He noticed the two people chatting down the way, they did not look like normal national leaders, it seemed they were of the business world. He had business to do, a new product line releases needed to be sent to his partners and he needed to work on expansion, no matter how successful you are, you need to get more. It was the law of capitalism, always get more for yourself. He smiled taking another short puff

Adams liked this guy already.

"Heh, I think we may have to change the name. I don't know how well Black Death is going to go over," Adams said with a smile. "Accompany us back to Decartes and we can get it down on paper. With the way things are going next door, I'm guessing we'll be taking off shortly."

"Sounds good."

They heard a knock at the open door and looked to see Antonio Largiou who was meandering the halls.

"Am I interrupting?" he asked.

"Antonio Larigou! Of course not, we were just finishing up some business." Adams said as he approached him and shook his hand. "I'm Henry Adams. This is Richard Black, of Black Death cigarettes, soon to be a subsidiary of the Mercantilist Brewing Co."

Black shook Larigou's hand a little standoffish and with a bit of suspicion.

"Cigar?" Adams said as he offered one to Larigou who took it.

"Join us, please." Adams said he took a seat at a conference table and Black and Larigou joined him.

"I had actually wanted to discuss with you a potential partnership between Mercantilist Brewing Co. and Nerdic. Currently, we use a number of local and international shipping companies to service our needs, but our ever expanding business is beginning to make me realize the need for a more organized central transportation system. That, and the punitive tax rates some of these socialist countries charge us is really cutting into our bottom line."

"Go on." Largiou said, slightly more interested.

"I have been very impressed by what Nerdic has been able to accomplish, especially with the construction of the massive rail line on the continents and negotiation of access to important waterways. I would like to propose an exchange in preferred stock between our nations, to link our fates and profit from each other's ventures. Something minimal, to start, like a 5% exchange. We can also exchange representatives to one another's Boards."

Black listened intently, he now having a significant interest in the deal he saw unfolding before him.

Largui took one draw of the cigar then put it down unceremoniously don't see peoples attractiveness to this crap, ill stay with my opium "I am as of right now the largest holder of international rail lines, control more privet naval craft and transport the largest section of the worlds food."

He pulled out his pipe and took a short puff "I personally hold over half the interest in my company, and we as of yet have not even released any preferred stock. We are looking for expansion, that is the name of capitalism. We also are highly focused on efficiency and maximization of profits. As for our board, right now by the bi-lines they are just the top stock holders in the company who do not hold executive positions. As for a merger as you are saying even of the slightest level is currently not in our works, but if you would like to hold greater talks about such things in a more formal environment that could be possible. While I cant invite you back to my estate, you are unfortunately not Irnotian and getting into my native land for you will be more then a little challenging. We can how ever have a meeting on a ocean going yacht my company owns.

As for possible partnerships in shipment that is a completely fine arrangement, we are more then happy to lease our resources and handle your shipments, we have contracts already with some socialist nations and have good working arrangements with their government. We can extend these services to you in the way of purchasing your products at a bulk price to be determined, or for percentage. We normally deal with percentage marketing. In fact relatively soon we will be releasing new press releases to our partners. Nerdic would more then willing to become your sole contract partner in the shipping Fields, we can guarantee safety and security of your products."

He closed his eyes for a second the opium giving him a bit of effect, a smile on his lips.

OOC: yeah, I meant to mention that but forgot to. Nerdic is just one of the "international shipping" companies we use. We were looking for Nerdic to take over as exclusive transport and sever the ties with all our other transporters, including Mercantilian ones, hence the exchange in stock so we have mutual interest; which is something like what you're suggesting here if I follow right. But really, I just like the thought of intertwining our businesses and having a Nerdic rep on the Board. Our Board votes on the President, but Mercantilians will always dominate it, and so for all RP intents and purposes its more ceremonial because I'll always have control of the chairman, and thus operations. I wasn't expecting you to surrender any RP control (hence the modest 5% offer) of your company either  :P. Perhaps at the outbreak of the War I'll call a Board meeting or something, but enough digression...

"I'll see you on the yacht," Adams said as he rose and shook hands with Larigou. He headed back to his meeting to check on the headache his colleagues were still in.

I hope we get out of here soon, he thought to himself.

"We were actually on our way out," Wallis said.

"If you'd care to join us. We'll brew a pot on the plane," Adams said.

Adams made eye contact with Larigou on his way out and gave him a nod.

Then the Merchant delegation left the conference.

Sorry for my absence of late there have been problems in my personal life recently which have prevented me doing much online (and also for a while the university network refused to let me get on the forum) which I've made reference to before in the RL section (I have a swelling of the lymph nodes that may or may not be cancer, this added to other things has not helped) I'll update this section when I have time as I'm in coursework, synopsis, exam time so it will probably be this weekend or early next week.
