The Library of Congress ordered your entire house preserved as a living museum of 1959.

Fair enough. :D

you forgot the option; None of the above.

Man, you guys hate smartphones that much, eh?

Not me. I have no problem with smartphones, though the behavior of some people while using smartphones is high on my list of peeves. ;)

I really do, they are an ultimate drain on genuine interaction. I get so angry every-time I am hanging out with a group of friends it is invariable that at least half of them will not be paying attention to anything but their phone. Additional sin: selfies. I understand they can be useful (I had one for awhile and ran a business through it) but for all the potential gain the reality of what they bring to my life is utter shit.

Btw Khem I found that walker you were looking for.

They're cool devices, supremely useful, but also a pit of self-absorption for those with ego issues and a giant time-drain for those of us with internet addiction problems.
Personally, I can't stop getting online if I have a smartphone. I find myself fucking with the phone constantly instead of appreciating wherever I am, whatever I'm doing, whoever I'm with. It makes me feel obligated to read every single social media post from my friends, to answer every message right away. It's god damn miserable.
Many other people use them too much to share every single detail of their day or to post a zillion pictures of themselves. Younger generations especially, my own included, have become obsessed with documenting their life over actually experiencing and appreciating it. The ability to get immediate feedback on your posts, your photos, has caused a lot of people to develop issues with self-esteem, or has at least exacerbating existing issues. They can't feel good about themselves unless other people, even strangers, validate them with upvotes and Likes and comments.
On top of all that, what Khem said is quite true: it's hard to keep people's attention when hanging out in person. They keep wondering what's happening on Facebook, how close are they to leveling up in a game, etc. etc. ... so they spend their time on the phone instead of interacting with you. I can't tell you how many dinners I've spent watching someone play with a phone across the table. A lot of folks don't even give a fuck any more if the person they're with doesn't have one and is essentially sitting with them alone and bored. I don't want to go to a party and have every conversation interrupted by someone going, "Oh, hang on a sec." then messing with some stupid phone for like 5 minutes.
Some people are so addicted they can't even stop texting while they drive. Statistics on fatal car accidents caused by phone distraction are disturbing.
tl;dr version: Smartphones are extremely useful if you have the self control to keep them in your fucking pocket when you're talking to a real person or watching a play or driving a car. I do not have that so I use a flip-phone like an old person.

/me is an old man...
You concisely and perfectly summarized my issues with smart phones. Though I have never even liked on your wall phones (I need body language) or talking on them in any fashion, so my opinion was biased before the advent of these devices.

/me is an old man...
Would it be rude of me if I asked how old, exactly? :o
-
28 years of age.
-
28 years of age.
Thanks. Yeah, you're not old from where I sit.
And I had no idea that would be so incredibly painful to read. :wine:
-
Haha good, I'm 29 and don't want to feel old. :P May we ask your age, Ben?
One other problem I forgot: kids being bullied online. When every child has a smartphone and a social media account, they get no relief from bullying when they leave school for the day. As a kid I remember being alone at home as the only respite I received from the otherwise constant daily torment of less unpopular peers. Even that was enough social conditioning to contribute to deeply and truly hating myself for many years.
Now that nasty shit follows kids around 24 hours a day, weekdays and weekends. I cannot imagine how horrible that must feel.

Not sure I can bring myself to post it without the support of lots and lots of alcohol. Would it be enough to say that Gerald Ford was not the first president I lived under?

Quite sufficient, good Sir. ^_^ I'm guessing you're about my eldest sister's age.

If her age is also the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything then yes! :-)
-
The younger of my sisters is 42, as it happens. Best age to be! ^____^
