Yeah, it never even crossed my mind that sweatpants outside the house is frowned upon until I started hearing comedians make fun of people who do (often themselves).  Then again, I've never had a decent sense of fashion.

Yea it is a big fashion nono, often with connotations of "white trash"ness of the wearer when delivered in an insult.

I went to get a haircut today and wore sweatpants. I don't mind one bit because the poor bastard that has the nerve to insult me to my face isn't going to like the result very much. Of course they can talk about me behind my back all they want. That just means that they're cowards. All the while I'll be nice and comfy in my sweatpants.

Strange question! Is this an issue?

I suppose I sometimes can be seen in public wearing them. I have sometimes been seen bikeing in them in Spring / Autumn. Perhaps I have even been to the supermarket getting ice-cream in them.

I saw some Patton Oswalt standup the other night and this was one of the jokes.  To be fair, he was mocking himself about it.  I think it's like Khem said, people insinuate that it's white-trash-y.  I was just interested if it was universal, regional or American, etc. etc.

Plus, you know, I couldn't think of anything better for the daily poll that day.

you know they say us dirty europeans wear sweat pants all the time. "british white trash" also wears sweat pants, common occurrence in Lil Britain show.

I don't own sweatpants but I also don't give a damn if other people wear them in public. People say they're comfy but elastic waistbands are not my favorite thing.

I mean I personally don't own any sweatpants, my years on the streets made me appreciate functional clothing and the fact that I might have to sleep outside at any given moment so all my clothing is reflective of such.
