Shortening nomination/election periods
« on: April 26, 2015, 12:34:39 PM »
So our typical nomination period for an officer election is ten days. This is a very long time, and the vast majority of people declare in the first three days. Elections themselves are a little less long at five days, but I've heard some comments that those are too long as well.

What does the Ecclesia think of this? I would support shortening nomination periods to five days, but I also think five days is a fine length for an election. Anyone else have feelings on this?

I support it.  Maybe we can work out an amendment to the Ecclesia Procedure Act?

Not sure if this is off the point or related, but why is a position currently vacant?  Isnt Khem the current cit-lai?  Does noms and voting vacate a position for the duration?  If that is the case, then we should most definitely shorten the time frames of noms and voting.

Perhaps 3 and 3?

It's unclear legally whether or not Khem is still the Liaison while elections are ongoing. In the future, the incumbent Liaison will definitely continue to hold office while elections are happening, but since the new law made it an elected position, the situation is a bit different.

I agree that we need to shorten the election period, and I agree that five and five would be fine.

7 and 7, it'd make sure it goes over a weekend.

I agree!

My freedays are sun. & mon. Frequently I will not be able to check in on work-days. 7-7 is my preferred as well.

I agree with 7 and 7 on Sat. and Sun.

I'll start drafting an amendment to the Ecclesia Procedure Act ASAP.  :)

I like 5 days for nominations; there usually isn't much to do during this period. For elections, I would prefer 7 days to include a weekend but 5 is fine too.

I'll just point out that 7 + 7 = 14 = one day less than the current election period. The only thing changing is that we would be shortening the nomination period and lengthening the voting period, with the overall election period shortened by only one day.

If that's all the more we're going to shorten the election period, there is no point in shortening the election period by one day.  :P

Agreed with Cormac: 14 days is not significantly better than 15 days.

Could we do something like 5 days for nominations, 5 days for voting UNLESS such a voting period would not include a Saturday and/or Sunday? Then in the aforementioned special case we could extend the voting period, either by 1 day or 2, to meet the requirement to include at least one weekend day.

...but maybe that's too complicated. If so, I would greatly favor 5-and-5 over 7-and-7.

I like five-and-five best, but wouldn't be opposed to Allama's idea.

If we accept the premise that only the more active players will apply to nominations (and surely should be the ones), then shortening the nomination period to less days than a week (for those who can't come to the forum too often), sure I can support that, but the vote has to go for a week, otherwise you're excluding people that can't come every other day.

so I'll compromise for a 3 (noms) - 7 (vote), it's still 10 days.

I'd like to hear those that agreed with the issue of exclusion and were leaning to a 7-7 period, do you agree with this compromise?

I think to make a substantial difference we should do 5 and 5
