Title: Motion to Create Skype Forum, Begin Official Work on TeamSpeak Server
Post by: AwesomeSaucer on August 04, 2015, 11:57:16 PM
(And I'm sure NONE of you saw this coming! ;))

Ecclesia,

As many of you have been noticing, over my time as Citizen-Liaison, I have been (quite obnoxiously) promoting two distinct platforms for communication between us Taijituans: Skype and TeamSpeak.  We currently do in fact have a Skype chat room, but it feels empty, with minimal to no talk between anyone through the service.

I think now's the time to change this.  This proposal, if passed, will initiate two major changes to Taijitu: creating a section on our forum dedicated to scheduling Skypes, and creating an always-on TeamSpeak server for voice-chat.

This section on the forum dedicated to Skype would:
- Be located under the "General Category" tab
- Have a sticky link that redirects Taijituans to our Skype schedule (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1NroIa_eISc4BWUXEbO_kKVjaL8enI6lvvKbsdOgmQEA/edit?usp=sharing)
- Be the official place for Taijituans to schedule Skypes of any kind, at any time that suits them (times and specific details of Skypes must be included in any submission

The TeamSpeak server would:
- Be always-on
- Be a universal meeting place similar to IRC, but with voice

NEITHER SKYPE NOR TEAMSPEAK WOULD IN ANY WAY REPLACE ANY OF OUR CURRENT METHODS OF COMMUNICATION, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO IRC, OR THE FORUM

Yep, that's pretty much it!  Any suggestions or pre-voting amendments are 100% welcome and advised!  Thank you!  :D

I don't see why this proposal is needed. All of these can occur without ecclesia involvement.

A subforum for skype may not be needed either. You could just make a thread in general discussion

True.  Perhaps I may take this down if a few other people agree with you; I just wanted to get more involved with the Ecclesia and to get people's opinions more accurately (especially since that post by Funk to throw me out).

I'd prefer to have a separate thread for Skypes simply because then we could get more detailed, longer posts with more info.  A thread may get lost in time eventually, a subforum never would.

I generally concur with Dyr, sections of forumses are crap, many are created for things that barely anybody use, plus why would you want a forum section of something you'll use outside of the forums?

Being an "official" meeting place, I do think Ecclesia needs to say something, Ecclesia has been silent, but first you'll have to make it a meeting place in the first place, not many people are using Skype or at least it seems to be bellow expected levels. Why would you want to move to something else even more exclusive than Skype while keeping Skype bellow expected functionality? either make Skype work or move to something else less exclusive and giving up on skype. IRC works because it is already a meeting place, it's not supposed to be exclusive, except for the douchebag_tavern.

If the thread+skype do gain traction, you can always ask for thread to be pinned

That's kinda the point of making this legislation.  To GET people to use Skype more.  The reason no one uses it is because there's no reason to; there's nothing scheduled yet.  And there's where this thread/subforum comes in.

Though, you make a good point on restricting the TS server.  I'll open it up, so that it can truly be a meeting place.

I may do that, but we'll see what happens.  :)

However, my gut still says subforum because it would simply be better at getting more people's eyes towards Skype.  New users wouldn't have to dig through menus to schedule something, they would just click on "Skype," "New Topic," and write their idea.

I was saying TS is actually more exclusive than Skype in terms of users, ask BBB to make a poll on "what programs do you actually have installed right now?" include Skype and other mediums like TS, IRC and whatnot, you'll see only the hardcore PC gamers will have TS and we're not that many relating to the whole citizens universe. I have TS installed but I don't use it, and I doubt I'll use it. I don't want 3, 4 or 5 different "meeting places" for Taijitu unless we can take something or value from there, like events...collective gaming...storytelling...

I think more ways to communicate would be beneficial to Taijitu.  Things like collective gaming, storytelling, and events are exactly what voice communicators would bring to us.  Downloading TeamSpeak and Skype is easy; it shouldn't be too much of a worry to new Taijituans.

The reason no one uses skype is because no one wants to. It's not that nothing is scheduled. Most people wouldn't participate in calls even with nothing scheduled.

I can't speak for everyone, but while I personally do not object to there being a Skype group, I wouldn't use it. I don't know if that position is common or an outlier.

^ I feel the same way.

^ Also agreed. When the forums, IRC, and NS all exist already, I'm not likely to ever use Skype (especially when most people will already be online in one of the existing meeting places). Voice chat might be redundant for those at home, and unusable for those at work or school who can't be making noise.

That's not to say I oppose it if others actually want it. Out of curiosity, has anyone been asking for a Skype channel apart from our Citizen-Liaison?

No but we've tried group chats or group calls for a while, in really I still have 2 big taijitu chats, they were good enough for Oz to have my contact and creep call me.

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) just calling to check on you boy.

I might stop in teamspeak once in awhile, but I'd probably never do scheduled Skype groups. I only ever did Skype if we had a superpowers 2 night. I'm curious who else utilizes the Skype group as well

I'm with Dyr on this - there isn't any need for the Ecclesia's approval unless the forum is intended to be made 'official' in some specific legal sense (which it should not be).

My suggestion is to just make a thread in general discussion, organize and advertise it. All those things are well within the scope of the Liaison's power (or of any citizen, for that matter).

1) Many of us have been talking semi-regularly on skype for months. In fact I believe during my last term I actually created a thread solely for the exchanging of skype and steam info. To build a community focus rather than a GP based focus. It had mixed results, but the region is still here.

2) As stated by many others, we do not need another region sponsoring initiatives which can be easily handled internally.

I do not see the need for this legislation.

Oz's Twitch Garden Party event was very participated and wasn't on Skype.
