Title: The Oasis
Post by: Solnath on June 14, 2007, 10:39:35 PM
As the sun rose from the East, heat followed light in their eternal chase. Soon, the chill of the night was but a memory and Kash'ra Sah Fah'seir, an old leotaur stumbled out of his hut that he had built next to a relatively large stone barrier that blocked wind from blowing the sand to the oasis. Standing eight feet tall, the leotaur flexed and stretched in front of his habitation. His golden fur was mostly clean and his mane was thick, but scars riddled his body.

Kneeling with his four legs to drink from the small lake, he suddenly stopped and sniffed the air. Looking around him, he bared his teeth in a smile before rising up and walking into the water. Visitors were coming, so he might as well be clean to greet them. He wondered absently who it would be this time. Yet another recruiter who would not believe he had been retired.

Flavius Hanotepelus and Furio Hertarian stopped their horses side-by-side. They were wearing light, steel chainmail armor coated in silver, with a cloth, forest green hauberk covering their chest and upper legs. Their horses, tired of dehydration, were to be exchanged for camels at the nearest camp. But here was some water, for them all.

"Look at that, Flavius. Pff. A cat-man." Furio loosened his gorget and dismounted his horse. Flavius did the same.

"Oh, and he made a litter-box for himself too. ...Flavius?"

"Quiet, Furio. You know as well as I do we're not at home in Shanium anymore. Who knows, maybe these cat-men have a 'litter-box' twice the size of the Empire."

"Alright Flavius, whatever you say."

The horses quickly bent down to drink from the oasis, and the men filled up their water jugs.

Rune Dyken rode up to the oasis, thirty and needing water. He wore light leather Armour on his chest, and he had a mixture of hardened Leather and some bits of plate Armour for him legs. He had only a few pecies of mail for his arms, and a small shirt made out of Fur. He looked at the others, eyeing them as he let his horse drink. He kept his Quiver and Bow on his back, as s he always has done. But this time, he also had his Xiphos and his Gladius ready, in case of things got a littile out of hand. He filled up his canteen and he decied to make camp here tonight. He began pulling out his tent cloth and began to make camp thinking When will the guys leave?

Looking at the three visitors patiently in the pond for quite a long time, Kash'ra finally spoke out in a booming voice, "Welcome travellers," strangely enough the leotaur seemed to be speaking the mother tongue of each of the men who heard him. "I am Kash'ra Sah Fah'seir, what brings you to this humble oasis of peace?" As he said the last word, a glowing symbol appeared on each of the palm trees. Smiling to himself, Kash'ra looked at each of the men in turn, waiting for one of them to speak.

"I live here, this is my home. You are humans, is that true? Not many of you find their way here, this close to the Shifting Sands," the leotaur scratched his mane and turned to the third man. "You are not with these two? Judging by your clothes, you are not. Interesting variety."

"No, im not with them, i come here from the Foothills, in the highlands. The names Rune Dyken. I have severd in the Barbarian Legion as a scout. I am from the Lakzou tribe. If you know who they are."

Rune turns and walks over to his makeshift camp, pulling out some meat, cooking it."

"Care to join me?"

Otto stumbled through the sand. He cursed the sun, its heat making him hot and tired. Standing about 5’11” and dressed in a fine regal blue robe, he staggered up a large sand dune, rising to see an oasis below. Reaching deep into his dusty satchel, he consulted a tattered piece of leather that marginally resembled a map. Nodding in satisfaction, he resumed to navigate his way down the dune.

The sun climbed ever higher into the sky, slowly and relentlessly following the pattern set out in ages long past.  The universe was ordered and precise, however chaotic it appeared at times to the tiny beings experiencing such small slices of time.

This, at least, was what crossed through the mind of one of the tiny beings as the camel it rode plodded over the top of a dune to bring a much-sought oasis into sight.  Clad in the loose-fitting robes and head-coverings favored by those living in the desert, one would almost assume he was native to the area... that is, until he came close enough to be seen clearly through the heat-produced haze lying perpetually above the sands of mid-day.  His fair skin and the lock of red hair that had escaped his headband betrayed his ancestry, though not as much as his child-like height and slanted green eyes.

He was a lowland elf from the dense forests far to the north-east.  His serene countenance barely concealed the mischievous streak that was so odd for his kind.  Long ago he had learned to let wisdom show through quite thoroughly before revealing his jovial nature, lest his fellows think him daft.

Strange, he thought, I would not have expected to see so many travelers about these desolate parts.  I quite fancied I would find myself alone in this oasis, apart from its usual inhabitants.  All the oases in this desert have some sort of creature settled in them, seeing as they're the only places offering water and shelter from the sun and wind.

Looking down on the others gathered about or approaching the pool, he sighed mentally and continued downward.

Ah, well.  Fate has brought more bizarre turns that this, I suppose.

Rune stood up and noticed that several other people were going to join this Little gathering

Who are they? Friends? Enemy's?

Rune began to pull out his bow and set his sights for the small figure on the camel

"HEY! WHO ARE YOU SHORTY?!"

"I don't think you want to do that, Dyken. Be civil." said Flavius, one hand on the hilt of his sword.

Rune grumbled as he put his bow away

"Well, then you talk to the shorty, and see what he wants!"

Finally reaching the bottom of the dune, Otto briskly walked passed the others gathered, quickly dusting off his robe in annoyance.

This damned sand gets everywhere.

He ignored the water in the oasis; summoning the cool fluid was easy enough, and he really did not want to have to talk to one of the assorted beings. Except one. He stopped at the edge of the oasis and closed his eyes briefly in concentration. He then resumed to lightly walk on the waters surface, in the direction of the one he had come to know as Kash'ra Sah Fah'seir.

Bemused by the conversation between the uppity man and the more sensible one who had brought him to civility, Rethian urged his camel to the water's edge and dismounted as gracefully as one raised in the forest could from the back of a lumbering beast like the one he rode.  It wasn't saying much, of course, but he managed not to embarrass himself and to retain his composure.

He looked out over the pool to the leotaur in its center.  "Sir, be you the guardian of this oasis?"

The air was dry and sand started to brush against his face at high speeds. He felt like he was choking as he started to drop. His stupid Dragon dropped him again but this time he was sure he was going to die. He covered his face as the intensity of falling was starting to hurt him. Finally he landed on the sand  with a hard hit. The sand around him seemed to cushion his fall.

"Ow..." he said as he slowly got up. He held his back and cracked it back to place. He breathed in deep but coughed on the sand and spat it out, he really needed water. To his luck but rotten luck. He turned around and saw an oasis of some kind with people around it. He scratched his head and said to himself, "I think I hit my head a little too hard."

He looked over there again and started to pinch himself to see if he was dreaming, "This survival stuff is easy.."

He began to walk towards the Oasis in his desert nomad clothing. He wrapped the cloth across his face as sand started to blow around him. The sun cooking his feet but he didn't care, that water looked so good. When he finally got there he ignored the man, the camel, and the leotaur. Dunking his face into the water and taking it in. The water felt so good...

Hmmm, must be a native

"You ok man? You got sand all on ya...and your feet dont look so good"

Rune stepped back a bit, a little shocked that this man would just draw a sword in a instant, but seeing that he basically threatened, Rune drew his sword, ready to attack the man at any moment

"Dishonor you, what the heck!"
Title: Re: The Oasis
Post by: Gulliver on June 20, 2007, 10:36:17 PM
The sun, in what was becoming an unhealthy and troublesome habit, beat down mercilessly on yet another traveler plodding through the desert. One might mistake this particular one for a werewolf, and indeed many a one had indeed done just that. The mistake was perfectly understandable; what else was one to conclude when faced with a big, hairy humanoid fellow standing only a few inches short of seven feet in height, sporting a tail, muzzle, pointy ears, pointy teeth and such? But to the learned, several telling signs told the truth of things. The traveler displayed plantigrade locomotion rather than the digitigrade sort, marking him as a Vaan, a people who, fed up with the severity and frequency of the problems that the previously described confusion with bloodthirsty lycanthropes had caused, chose to seclude themselves and minimize contact with others. This had in fact only made the occurrence of confusions more frequent, as people knew less of them than ever before as a result, but since they weren't around to be confused with other less savory beings the Vaan considered it an acceptable side effect.

Also, most werewolves didn't wear glasses. The traveler of course, as has been implied, did, and at this particular moment stopped to remove them from his muzzle and clean them. He had just seen something which led him to believe that they were not functioning properly, and in such situations such a cleaning resolved the problem most effectively. After a final dry he placed the two pieces of glass set within their delicate metal frame back on his muzzle where it had rested for innumerable hours, weeks and  years, and there in plain sight, clear as ever, was that something which reason told him which he should not be seeing. An oasis, with an improbable amount of people gathered about it. He considered that perhaps it was an illusion. Whatever it was, it called to be investigated in the most first hand and personal manner possible, and so throwing all caution to the wind he padded forward, straight into the midst of an apparent scuffle of lethal proportions. He took the natural course of action: waved his hand in a slow, exaggerated arc and in a drawn out breath said "Heeellooo?" in his deep voice.

Quietly observing the surprising amount of visitors that had appeared at the oasis, Kash'ra nodded calmly to each of them as they approached and lifted his hand in greeting to the waving Vaan before noticing his old friend, Otto walking towards him.

"Long time no see, archmage," his deep voice boomed, ensuring that everyone heard him. "A busy morn is upon us. May shade follow your footsteps." He took two steps forward which seemed to lift him on the surface of the water. A non-magical illusion though, as he was actually standing on the large, clear crystal that kept the water clean and abundant.

"To all others who have wondered here on this beautiful dawn, feel welcome and at ease. This place is the Oasis of Peace, where none must fear violence or danger by the blessing of the sorceress Ayalia." As he spoke, he lifted his muscled arms, precisely timed to correspond with another flash of the symbols. This time, however, it sent out a calming wave to everyone present, along with an age old image of beasts and men and many of the other dominant creatures of the world talking and dining with each other, laughing and exchanging stories on the shores of the small lake.

Rune put his sword away, watching this strange show

What the 'ell is this?

Title: Re: The Oasis
Post by: Gulliver on June 21, 2007, 06:12:39 AM
This strange runic light show, sensation of calm and the images associated with it and that fact that the leotaur had raised his hand in greeting and spoken failed to immediately grasp the Vaan's conscious though processes. Instead these events were hastily stored away in some deep vault within his mind while he continued the more pressing and fascinating matter at hand, the investigation of the pair with swords. He raised an eyebrow in surprise and fascination as one of them put their sword away, apparently withdrawing from the fight. Still, he had in no way reacted to the visual and auditory stimulus provided, and so the Vaan took the next investigative step: tactile stimulus. With the index finger of his right hand, he gave the one who had put his sword away a firm prod.

For reasons beyond reason, his mind then decided this was  prudent time to unlock those temporarily stored events of the past minute or so. The Vaan's ears twitched in surprise, and without waiting to observe the effects of his prodding he wheeled about to face that one who had spoken. Having never seen a leotaur personally, this was yet another surprise for him. Something else which he found even more surprising prompted him to exclaim to the leotaur " Xaanaceha uuru Vaanqkanä?", which was clearly translated for everyone present as "You can speak Vaanqka?"

"Yes," the leotaur spoke to the Vaan. "And no. I speak my own language and you hear it as Vaanqka. Welcome. It has been a long time since I have encountered one of your kind."

He disarmed himself, and he's annoying. I should just kill him... but he's not worth getting blood on my sword.

He gracefully put the sword back in his leather scabbard, returning to drinking the water next to the camel. He ignored the other who was annoying him and when he stopped drinking he wiped his mouth and put the cloth over his mouth and raised the hood on his brown cloak.

Now to find that damn dragon

Rethian, never one to disregard such terribly interesting events, addressed the leotaur once more.

"Your language is a magical one, then, yes?  I've heard tell of tongues that speak to each as his own, but never have I had the opportunity to hear one.  Or perhaps, could it be that there is some spell cast over this oasis that translates, and not a magical property of the words themselves?

Oh my, it would seem that in my eagerness to know more about this phenomenon I forget my manners.  I am called Rethian."
Title: Re: The Oasis
Post by: Gulliver on June 23, 2007, 02:03:38 AM
"Ah," said the Vaan with an expression of fascination on his features. "Now that, that is brilliant. And indeed, it will have been some time since you or any have seen one of my sort. We, unfortunately, have adopted the habit of avoiding others. I have to say, it is rather terribly boring, which would be the explanation from my presence here," he continued, the speech taking on a slightly long winded and rambling quality. "Though, I find it incredible that you have ever had the chance to meet a Vaan at all. Either you have been around for quite some time, or you are exceptionally lucky. I am-"

"Why the 'ell did you prod me mate?!"

The Vaan blinked, cutting his speech short. He turned to look at the one who had interrupted, and failed to immediately recall him until after a few moments of silence had passed.

"Oh!" he finally exclaimed. "You responded! Now, that is also something. Either you are a very elaborate mirage or such illusion or you are very much real." The Vaan leaned in uncomfortably close and took  a deep breath through the nose. "You certainly smell real enough...but, oh yes but, the new friend  here that I now know as Rethian is correct. My apologies for failing to introduce myself properly earlier. I am Ran Har Gai, but you may simply call me Ran. Error of pronunciation is easily forgiven, do not worry," the Vaan now known as Ran concluded with a friendly smile and a slight wag in his tail.

Kash'ra gave a short chuckle at the Vaan before addressing Rethian. "It is both. My language is a magical one but this place enables everyone to understand each other as well to avoid misunderstandings. And yes," he turned his focus on Ran again with a grin that reminded those who saw it that the leotaur was a hunter. "Ran Har Gai of the Vaan, I have been around for quite a while."
Title: Re: The Oasis

Ran nodded as he considered what he had just heard, as fascinated as ever. He was also as curious as ever. In the spirit of inquisitive exploration that had led him to venture out into the world he decided to investigate further. Fumbling through his belongings he muttered "this is something which just cannot wait..." and produced a journal and pen. He flipped through the pages until he was satisfied, then spoke.

"If I may ask, what is that you... well, I am not sure that I know your name either for that matter, so I will ask that as well as this, this being  what sort of being you are. Perhaps you are aware of the Vaan, rare as that may be, but I am certainly not aware of your kind."

Rethian, eager to learn the name and nature of this intriguing being, controlled his desire to speak up again and settled himself by edging slightly closer to the Vaan by a scant few steps, peering sideways at the book Ran held as if he could read it from where he stood (which, of course, he could not).
Title: Re: The Oasis
Post by: Gulliver on June 26, 2007, 01:09:24 AM
"Oh," said Ran with the tone of an afterthought to the leotaur. "Would..." He paused, his ears twitched as they detected the approach of another from his flank. The very edge of his vision supplemented this finding with its own input. He cut short what he had been saying completely, turned, and looked down at the elf. The same slightly silly smile was still plastered on his face and the same wag was still in his tail.

"Hello there, have I heard your name yet? If I have I have forgotten it and am terribly sorry."
Title: Re: The Oasis
Post by: Allama on June 26, 2007, 01:32:23 PM
Encouraged by the Vaan's friendly attitude, Rethian stepped over to him and stopped at arm's length.  Unable to resist the urge to behave ludicrously after being polite and formal for so long, he bowed preposterously low, nearly upsetting his head-covering.  As it was, the cloth designed to shield the neck from the sun's rays flopped right over the headband into his face.

He gracefully whipped the cloth back into its proper place while straightening, a serious look to his face and posture.  He appeared as though nothing untoward had happened; not the blink of an eye would have shown someone who walked by at just that moment that the elf before them was so much as capable of silliness.  "I, dear sir, am Rethian.  I do believe you mentioned your preferred name was Ran, yes?"
Title: Re: The Oasis
Post by: Gulliver on June 26, 2007, 04:35:55 PM
"Then good day to you Rethian," replied Ran, doing his very best to resist laughing in case the bizarre ritual that had just been performed was some deeply held and respected custom which he was ignorant of. He returned the bow with one of his own, but far less deep lest he upset his glasses and find himself lacking vision. "And yes, my name is Ran," he concluded, speaking the "R" in the name with a guttural quality which hinted at a growl.

"Good day to you as well, Ran.  I'm afraid my voice just won't do justice to your name, but I hope my humble attempts to pronounce it correctly will suffice."  Rethian had rolled the 'r' a bit more than he'd hoped to, but it sounded a little guttural... for an elf's voice, that is to say.

Rune took of his bow and arrow and set it near his litile camp area, a good distance from everybody elese. He then took off his armour, leaving him with his clothes.

Ran grinned at Rethian, bemused by the elf's attempt. "That wasn't actually that bad, though it is not rolled. Still, to be absolutely fair, I am quite sure that I am butchering your name completely. A mutual destruction of the appellations. I suppose that it is the fairest possible resolution to the conflict.
Title: Re: The Oasis

"I believe you are correct.  Conflict or no, that is to say, though you made a fair effort at mine and bested me at my best.  Indeed, you fared better with fair than most do on the first attempt."
Title: Re: The Oasis
Post by: Gulliver on July 10, 2007, 01:17:23 AM
Ran nodded once or twice to this statement thoughtfully, before suddenly bursting back with life and energy. "I am Ran, you are Rethian and we both know this now quite well, so I would say that introductions are quite complete. Now, onto the business with which I was dealing with previously. Which was..." he raised the pen he was holding in one hand to his mouth and chewed on the end while his eyes drifted upward, his memory working to recapture the last few minutes of his activity. "I was going to do something now, I just cannot..." his eyes fell and he stopped in mid-speech and pulled the pen away from his gnawing teeth, held it before himself and examined it.

"I shouldn't be chewing on this," he concluded. Turning to Rethian he noted "This isn't just any ordinary pen, it's quite something. Scatter-brained me loses his thoughts and next thing I know I am destroying the thing with my teeth...wait a moment..." he paused, rolling his eyes around in their sockets, and then finally exclaimed "Right! I was going to write something with this pen, that is the only logical reason why I could have it out and about. Now, Rethian," he said, his hand now dragging across the pages of the journal from top to bottom in a series of fluid motions, "just what is it that brings you here, if I am not being too intrusive. Also, may I illustrate your person?"
Title: Re: The Oasis
Post by: Allama on July 10, 2007, 03:04:08 PM
"You certainly may illustrate me, if it pleases you, though I would caution you to consider the fact that you may, indeed, have brought out the pen expressly for the purpose of chewing, despite your current misgivings about such an endeavor.  An object like the one you hold would be quite handy for chewing and you may have temporarily reconsidered it's prime usage.  One must keep one's teeth both clean and sharp, don't you agree?"  Without waiting for a response from the perplexed and perplexing Vaan, Rethian continued.  "I have come here on a thus-far solitary sort of a search, you might say.  Decades ago I found a bit of lore and became rather fascinated by it; years of study gone, you see, so I mustn't let it go now, I'm sure you understand... where was I?  Oh yes, it, 'it' being my studies, of course, brought me here, to this desert, to seek the answer to the questions of my current purpose in life, that being my search for the place described in the lore I stumbled upon, that being the bit I mentioned earlier."

Rethian paused his rambling "dialog" for a moment, walking over the the Vaan's side to study the progress of what he hoped was to be a fashionable likeness.

"Oh..." Ran blinked, slightly stupefied and dumbfounded. As often as he would himself would go on such long winded speeches making little to no sense when taken as a whole, to the dismay of those talking to him, he could not recall someone ever having done the same for him. The sudden reversal of events had caught him off guard and left him momentarily disorientated. Shortly though however he returned to the persistent good spirit and nature which seemed his naturally inclination, puzzlement replaced by the standard marginally silly grin of his. Seeing that Rethian had walked over, clearly attempting to see what was on the paper. Ran happily obliged, revealing columns of an odd,  vertical cursive script (http://bobiusbobman.googlepages.com/VaanScript.png) besides very basic elements of Rethian's form captures in several quick strokes of the pen. As Rethian looked, he spoke.

"There are other ways to keep one's teeth clean and sharp, though the real trouble is keeping one's coat clean and neat, though," he said as he looked Rethian up and down, "That is something that I doubt you have experience with. Especially here. I do not think I would be lying to say that I am carrying a sack's worth of sand trapped in it all." At this point Rune interjected himself into the conversation, before Ran had time to comment on the purpose of life. As he asked Ran's identity from Rethian, Ran decided to answer for himself.

"I am Ran Har Gai, pleased to meet another new person and face. Who might my new friend be then?" he said, with the same smile and wag of the tail with which he had greeted Rethian.

"The names Rune, i come from the Hilly plains region, of the Iron Raven tribe."

Rune looked at Ran Har Gai, noticed that he had a tail

Woah, but seems like a nice guy...

"So, where are you from?"

Rune slowy moved his hand away from his sword at his belt and at his side, hoping that Ran Har Gai didnt see that.

OOC: Heheh, he gots far more than a tail. Did you read his description?

IC: "Then good day and best wishes to you Rune of the Iron Raven Tribe. I am trying to remember if I've heard of that lot, or of the name at all. That would probably be some time, so for the sake of you convenience, that can occur later. Now, to answer your question, I," said Ran, adopting a tone of mock seriousness, "am not from here, but instead from there."

Rune, grinning at Ran Har Gai, responded with the same mock  seriousness that Ran Har Gai gave him

"Oh, so you must must be from the place that is beyond here, but closer then father from there?"

Ha, this guys better then what i thought

Rune then reached into his hand and pulled out a coin, which he gave to Ran Har Gai.

"Here, this might help  you rember the Iron Raven's"

"Well, to be completely direct and clear," replied Ran as he took the coin in his hand, or paw, whichever was the better word with which to describe it, "the certain there from which I come from is a village by the name of Ssodzōqȫȫÿo." He rattled of the final collection of impossible syllables as he examined the coin that he now held. "So... are you honestly attempting to bribe me in to recalling a memory which I may not even have to begin with?"

Rune laughed at the sound of that

"No, No, im not bribing you. If i was, there would be a sword at your neck."

Well, this guy is funny

Rethian looked askance at the man before them for a moment before replying, and proceeded to do so with as much politeness as he could muster.  "Well, that sounds pleasant.  Could you perhaps repeat the name of your town, Ran?  I absolutely must give it a try."  Eagerness lit up his green eyes at the thought of a new language and new ways to manipulate the sound of his voice.  Rethian had always loved languages.  In fact, he'd loved learning anything new, foreign, or strange from the day of his birth, always voracious in his pursuit of knowledge and discovery.

Ran lifted an eyebrow and looked down at Rune following his statement, slightly lost and also curious as to whether the man would have the reach to properly place any sort of sword to his neck. He concluded that yes, he would, even if it was slightly awkward. Still, the man was all the same odd and slightly troubling. Just in case, Ran decided to add a verbal footnote to his raised eyebrow.

"I may not be armed, but that doesn't mean I'm not dangerous. I've traveled the lands this long not on my wits alone but also with a well placed fist when need be," he concluded with an completely inappropriate cheery tone.

"And," he said, now answering Rethian, secretly flattered that he had taken such an interest in him and his personal history. "The name of the town would be Ssozdōqȫȫÿo, wonderous little place." He spoke the name of the village slowly and deliberately, curious as to what Rethian would attempt with this new information.

Rune listened, fascinated by the village.

Woah, nothing like where i grew up...

"How do you say it? Ssodōqȫȫÿo?"

OOC: its missing a Z in Ssodzōqȫȫÿo.
Title: Re: The Oasis
Post by: Gulliver on July 13, 2007, 01:18:30 PM
OOC: Oops, that should be "Ssozdōqȫȫÿo". My mistake :P And if you haven't noticed, the second time Ran says it you can hold your cursor over it for an IPA transcription, though I'm not sure that will do much good :D

IC: Ran listened, and shook his head vehemently. That certainly was not how one said it.

"No no, it definitely is not spoken as "Sodȫhȫyo". It is, if you care to try again, Sso-dzō-qȫȫ-ÿo. Not sure if it is even possible for you to say that last bit, you probably don't have the tongue for it."

Rethian tried the town's name several times, never coming quite close enough to "Ssozdōqȫȫÿo" to satisfy himself but doing as good of a job as can be expected of one with a voice box such as his.

"Well, pronunciation aside I'd love to hear more about your village.  What is your society like?"

Rune began to chuckle to himself, but not in a disregarding way. Soon, the chuckle gave way to full blown laughter.

"I'm sorry, i just thought that was funny"

Ran blinked, and then removed his glasses and gave them despite a quick clean. The confusion clearly had nothing to do with sight, but it had become a habit of puzzlement. As he placed them back on his muzzle, he blinked some more and spoke.

"Just what did you find funny? True, I've found people outside of where I come from have an odd sense of humor at times...but I am not sure that this is one of them."

"No, its just the other one. He's obsessed with learning new things. Which i find a Little funny."

Rune slowly stopped laughing, and motioned for Ran to go on.

"Really?" said Ran. "I see nothing wrong with a thirst for new knowledge. That is why I am all the way here in the first place. But anyway, where to start? There is so very much to tell..." Ran rubbed his chin thoughtfully.

"It's a place far north of here if I have my bearings correct, in a wooded place. Certainly, there was forest just outside the village and the fields. The fields of course were for growing things so that we wouldn't starve. There was a brook in that woods, I remember that in my childhood I found it to be very entertaining. I would play there with a friend of mine, her name was Radi. I haven't seen her since I left, though I haven't seen anyone from there of course. We've taken to as a people to keeping to ourselves. We find that it avoids unfortunate confusion with werewolves, which was simply such a commonplace problem that they gave up on trying to deal with it completely. And from what I've seen it is alas too true. I can't recall how many times people have tried to do me in. Oh!" Ran's face lit up with realization. "Now I remember too, the village is in a valley. There was this one place that I also went with Radi high up into the hills, with a view of everything." Ran closed his eyes in nostalgia and said "At sunset it was quite the view to see."

'That sounds lovely, Ran.  Much like my own woodland city which, of course, is not a city like any most civilized races would recognize as such, being surrounded by and built among (and sometimes within) the trees... but I digress.  I do not mean to interfere with your desire to share a tale of home..."

"Well, its not around any more after it was burned down... but, while it was still standing, it was nestled in the hills around the border from the empire. We lived there, herding and selling things to travelers. Me and my wife lived there before..she..was..killed."

Rune looked off into the distance, a single tear rolling down his check.

Rune pulled out a small, hand drwan painting of his wife and his small child.

"Well, there they are."

"I am deeply sorry for you loss," said Ran, breaking from his standard mood of enthusiasm and joy. "But it is good to know that your child at least is safe. But as Rethian says, I have also been around a bit. I may have picked up something on these soldiers that could help you, or perhaps have written it down somewhere."
