bigbaldben for Voice of the People Editor
« on: May 13, 2015, 06:32:19 PM »
Today, I announce my candidacy and officially accept the nomination for the office of Voice of the People Editor.  There are several reasons why I believe I am the best choice for this position.

First, I have extensive experience creating news publications.  Like that one thing I did one time, and that other thing, you know, at that other place, neither of which I can find at the moment.

Second, I am active and productive.  Since I’ve joined, I’ve learned a lot about the region by reading the forums, spamming Myroria with questions and sticking my head into the IRC.  I’ve been especially active in Taijitu worldbuilding, and you can see samples of my work here and here, and dive down the Wiki-holes I’ve created, starting with my nation here. If you want an example of my level of productivity, just go to the recent changes page on the Wiki  and check the last month or so.

Third, I am responsible.  I don’t make decisions to take on responsibilities lightly, even with regard to my free time.  If elected, you will see the Voice published frequently and kept to a schedule.  I know from previous experience that a big key to building activity and/or readership is to keep things consistent, build anticipation, and meet the expectations you set for yourself.

Finally, I stand on my own merits.  I don’t namedrop or try to curry favor based on who I supposedly know.  Just ask Wast , Al’Khem or Eluvatar.

What can you expect from the Voice of the People if I am elected Editor?

·         General news recap of Taijitu/NS events/debates/legislation since the last issue
·         General news recap of Taijitu RP events since the last issue
·         Fantastic grammar good and impeccable edititing
·         Interviews with Taijitu citizens *
·         Editorials full of gossip, slander and ridiculous accusations
·         Articles exploring the history of Taijitu, both “RP” and “RL.”

*Interviews subject to willingness of citizens to be interviewed.  May interview kittens if no citizens are willing or available.

With all due respect, what can you expect from the Voice of the People if ChurchofSatan is elected Editor?

·         Complete and total destruction of Taijitu
·         Illegal gambling activities (probably)
·         Forty years of darkness, earthquakes, volcanoes
·         The dead rising from the grave
·         Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together, mass hysteria

Now, I am not perfect, but I am also not prone to exaggeration.  Though Gulliver and I, on our own, recently liberated Lazarus , I don’t believe NS regional warring  or whatever is my cup of tea.  Just as Taijitu worldbuilding or our Minecraft server doesn’t interest some of you.  That does not mean, however, that as Editor, I will not give every aspect of Taijitu a fair share of space and coverage.  And I will welcome any discussion from those that feel I am biased in some aspect.  This is, after all, the “Voice of the People,” not the “Voice of The Most Handsome Man in America.”

While I’m being honest, I apparently suck at IRC.  I have heard many interesting things happen there, and I log on when I can, but I have a knack for missing the action.  It may have something to do with the fact that I am usually awake during the daytime hours and asleep at night.  I admit that is crazy. You might consider me a reverse-vampire or something weird like that.  I suspect Taijitu IRC peaks while I am sleeping.  To make up for this, I will recruit others to keep me aware of IRC happenings, like the NSA.  If the rule on sharing chat logs is repealed, as discussed here, I may request those logs from certain people who are not spies at all to review for newsworthy events.

----------------

There you have it. All kidding aside, if elected, I will do my best to create a publication Taijitu can be proud of.  Best of luck to ChurchOfSatan, who I am sure, given his experience, would also be an excellent choice!

Sir, YOU have a pure Taijitu spirit!  I loved this speech!

I won't guarantee my vote to you, simply because ChurchofSatan has not posted his speech, but this speech...MAN.  :D :D :D

Oh. My God.

If this is an example of the writing style you'll employ as Voice of the People Editor, you're a really fucking strong contender. Well put, Ben Sir!

As suggested HERE, I've posted my mock up of VotP below.  Just a quick sample of what to expect if you elect me as your Editor.

Full size version attached or you can see it at this link

Half size can be viewed here for convenience - I will work on getting a decent file size if elected.

Just wondering, you'd make the newspaper multiple pages, correct?

I can. I think it will depend on the amount of content I'd have to work with.  But I'm always open to suggestions.

You're no amateur, I'll give you that. I do like your writing style, but as I said already, putting the whole thing up as a picture just isn't practical. Maybe if it were divided into numerous smaller pictures, but having the stories as text just works better. I like the customization this format allows though. Good work ben.

Ok, what else can I do to campaign?

Oversell experience. Check.
Attack opponent.  Check.
Give details of what you will do if elected, but only if opponent does as well.  Check.
Copy opponent tactics, like using the strikethroughCheck.
If something doesn't poll well, like making your mockup a graphic, backtrack!  Check.
Don't peak too early in your campaign.  D'oh!!!

One of the British regions used to make their updates I the form of an image and it was beautiful. The same goes for this one too. I have suggested to BBB in IRC, and he agreed, that the font should be changed to be more readable.

After thinking about it today, and to be quite honest, I would likely make two copies: a text version (with some pics) for easy sharing on forums, message boards, etc. and a graphic version because I enjoy making them.

That way people in Timbuktu that get internet from Pablo and his technicolor burro will be able to read it.  After all, they are the ones who need it the most.
