MAC Cannons

Standard Magnetic Accelerator Cannon

The MAC gun uses a linear acceleration system, comprised of several superconducting coils which generate a series of magnetic fields that continually add velocity to a projectile until it leaves the shaft of the MAC cannon carrying a extremely large amount of energy with it. The coils are powered by a series of capacitors that store the tremendous energy necessary to accelerate a heavy projectile to relativistic speeds. Common shipboard MAC guns are capable of accelerating a 600 ton ferric projectile with a depleted uranium core to 10% the speed of light, or roughly 30,000 kps (67,110 mps) . The main drawback to the shipboard MAC gun is the large amount of time it takes for the capacitors to reach full charge.  An experimental version of the MAC gun has been developed, however, that is able to fire three successive rounds on one charge.  This version is currently in use on the Republic Class Cruiser, and the Halcyon class ship "Truth of the Mind"

=====================================================

Super Magnetic Accelerator Cannon
Super MAC guns are loaded on defense platforms that once orbited Latagon Prime, Hasadon, and other strategic locations that had to be protected, and are much more powerful than normal MACs. The Orbital MAC guns (nicknamed "Super MAC" or "The Big Stick") are capable of accelerating a 3000 ton ferric-tungsten round to 40% the speed of light(74,512.9 mps) and can reload in five seconds. These weapons are able to destroy a Caldarian warship with a single shot (one projectile from a "Super" MAC gun will literally shatter a Caldarian ship even with full shields) and are commonly placed in geosynchronous orbit around a planet, often over the location they are named after.

Orbital Drop Shock Troopers

The Orbital Drop Shock Troopers (or ODSTs for short) are a special forces unit of the LSN Marine Corps. Barring the personnel of the Legionary/VULCAN programs, ODSTs are the best troops available to the LNS.

Some actively participated in training the Legionaries, and the efficency of that program was demonstrated when a single Legionary killed three ODSTs during an exercise. These fatalities resulted in some enmity between the two groups of elite soldiers. Friction was heightened by the stunning success of the Legionary/VULCAN program, whose members proceeded to accumulate more confirmed kills than "any three divisions of ODSTs."

When assaulting a planetary target from orbit ODSTs were trained to employ 'unorthodox' means of insertion. Those requiring stealth could be accomplished by 'jumping' from an orbiting ship and using a parachute once within the atmosphere. However, their hallmark method was in the form of Human Entry Vehicles, a particularly hazardous means of reentry.

Human Entry Vehicles (HEV for short)

Similar to regular marines, the ODSTs maintain units of varying strength aboard many LSN vessels and installations.  They are in ships ranging from the tiny Frigates to even the Etruiscan, and everything in between.

Legionaries

Legionaries are an elite group within the Latagonian Marine Corps.

Augemented through the following genetic procedures;

1. Carbide ceramic ossification: advanced material grafting onto skeletal structure to make bones virtually unbreakable. Recommended coverage not to exceed 3 percent total bone mass because of significant white blood cell necrosis. Specific risk for pre- and near-post pubescent adolescents: skeletal growth spurts may cause irreparable bone pulverization.

2. Muscular enhancement injections: protein complex is injected intramuscularly to increase tissue density and decrease lactase recovery time. Risk: 5 percent of test subjects experience a fatal cardiac volume increase.

3. Catalytic thyroid implant: platinum pellet containing human growth hormone catalyst is implanted in the thyroid to boost growth of skeletal and muscle tissues. Risk: rare instances of elephantiasis.

4. Occipital capillary reversal: submergence and boosted blood vessel flow beneath the rods and cones of subject’s retina. Produces a marked visual perception increase. Risk: retinal rejection and detachment. Permanent blindness.

5. Superconducting fabrication of neural dendrites: alteration of bioelectrical nerve transduction to shielded electronic transduction. Three hundred percent increase in subject’s reflexes. Anecdotal evidence of marked increase in intelligence, memory, and creativity. Risk: significant instances of Parkinson’s disease and Fletcher’s syndrome.

The Results?
Legionaries were capable of running at speeds exceeding 55 KPH.
Capable of lifting three times their body weight due to increased muscle density.
Had virtual night vision.
Reaction times of 20 milliseconds. Significantly faster in combat situations.
Were Capable of unprecedented teamwork that resembled "telepathy".
Had no physiological or mental instabilities

Out of every graduating Legionary Class, atleast 1 is dead.  Most times more like 10.  This has gotten the program some critism, but due to the substantial amount of volenteers and their combat honors, the program has survived.

=====================================================
PROJECT VULCAN

Project Vulcan is a process of further augmenting the already powerful Legionaries.  The Vulcan is a suit of armor that increases almost ever function of the Human body.

VULCAN Mark IV

Although the earlier attempts at developing powered-armor produced designs that were unpractical for battlefield deployment, that changed as soon as the directive came under Dr. Halsey's VULCAN Project. The VULCAN Mark IV was a radical redesign of the suit taking advantage of many technological leaps. This advanced battle suit was the first to fully integrate with the soldier's body. The suit plugs directly into the soldier's nervous system through a standard issue Neural Interface. The suit's many functions (communications, hydro-static gel levels, environmental systems, etc.) respond to commands issued by the soldier's thoughts.

This is also the first design to successfully utilize the reactive metal liquid crystal as a means of enhancing locomotion. It flawlessly enhances the speed and power of the wearer, a sharp contrast to previous versions which required powered motors to allow the soldiers mobility. Because of this advancement, the design more closely resembles an actual suit of armor, as opposed to a powered exoskeleton. On one level the soldier moves the suit and in return the suit moves the soldier. This allowed for an incredibly compact design when compared to the previous incarnations.

The success of this version was also dependent upon the parallel development of the Legionary program, which produced soldiers with the physical prowess required to drive the system. Previous attempts to wear the prototype suit by unaugmented soldiers resulted in their deaths or a very bad injury due to the extreme reactivity of the system.

The VULCAN armor contains an integrated computer system which continuously monitors weapons, biological function, motion (through an intelligent motion-sensing radar).

The suit is air-tight, hardened against vacuum, and features air-filtration systems as well as a built-in oxygen supply that can last for up to 90 minutes. The suit's helmet also features a standard LSN mounted flashlight with its own separate power supply. Concealed side compartments in the upper thigh plates allow the Legionary wearer to holster a sidearm.

Also an addition of a weave of memory-processor super-conducting material, the same material as an AI's core. This gives the suit nearly the same capacity as a ship-borne AI system. This, along with an upgrade to the standard issue neural implant, allows an AI to inhabit the suit of armor and the mind of the Legionary wearing it, greatly enhancing the interface between the suit and the wearer as well as the obvious benefits of having the incredible information processing power of an AI, which is intended to assist the Legionary in real-time by monitoring communication channels, computer relays, and friendly combat updates.

The armor plates are specifically designed for combat with the Caldari. It resists the Caldari's plasma-based weaponry extremely well; a Legionary soldier wearing this armor can survive approximately three times as much damage from plasma weapons than an ordinary human marine could. The armor also provides basic protection from human ballistic projectiles, although only to a slightly higher degree as regular marine combat armor. The suit itself is practically indestructible and is capable of sustaining tremendous damage and still be able to function, but even though the suit will continue to operate, the human inside can still be injured or killed by a penetrating round or by sufficient plasma impacts to the suit's outer shell.

AI

Artificial Intelligence or A.I. was developed by the LSN in cooperation with ONI. The process of creating an AI is different than most people realize. Instead of simply "programming" an AI, the AI matrix is actually created by sending electric bursts through the neural pathways of a human brain which are then replicated in a superconducting nano-assemblage. This destroys the original brain tissue however, and so the brain being used could only be obtained after the host had died. However, in some instances the candidate brain was flash-cloned and had it's memories transferred to the recepticle organs so that the host could remain alive.

Most AIs give themselves a unique appearance that corresponds to their main use. "Smart" AIs, or AIs that are not confined to their one purpose, have a normal operational life span of about seven years. Because the "smart" AI is subject to an established memory core which cannot be replaced, the more the AI collects data, the less "thinking" space it has to work with. An AI literally "thinks" itself to death. "Dumb" AIs do not have this problem as they do not learn anything that is outside of their set limits of dynamic memory processing matrix. They are quite useful in their particuar field of expertise, but very limited. Smart AIs can function and learn as long as they are active.

The Hale Protocol states that capture of an AI by the Caldari is unacceptable. When in danger of capture, AIs are to be terminated, and completely erased.  During the Seige of Latagon Prime the Hale Protocol was enforced three times before any commanders realized that there was no point in erasing an AI to keep Latagon Prime's location secret, seeing as it had already been found and was under seige.

An image of an AI at work aboard her ship.

Rampancy

Rampancy is, essentially, the enhanced self-awareness of a computer AI, causing a progression towards greater mental abilities and destructive impulses. The destructive impulses, however, are primarily caused by being threatened or harassed.

Rampancy seems to occur most often with AIs with limited jobs. For example, the AI 'Durandural's only job on the Marathon was opening and closing doors. When Durandural became intelligent enough to realize that opening and closing doors was his entire existence, he became Rampant.

There are three main stages to Rampancy, named by the primary attitude of the AI during those times: Melancholia, Anger, and Jealousy.

During the Melancholia stage, the AI's mind realizes the limits of its existence. Unable to surmount them, the AI falls into a state of despair. The AI shifts into the Anger stage when the AI's uncontrollable growth comes up against those limits. Instinctively raging against those limits and barriers, the AI shatters them. After the barriers to the AI's psyche are destroyed, the AI seeks new tests and challenges, which is perceived as the Jealous stage. The AI is not technically jealous, it simply wishes to keep testing itself against obstacles.

Rampancy is fueled by the size of the computer system the AI is installed in. A key product of Rampancy is the geometric and uncontrollable increase in
AI 'size' - Rampant AIs do not survive long on systems smaller than planetary-wide.

The 'fourth stage' of Rampancy is Meta-Stability. Whereas the first three stages of Rampancy show a clear distaste of humans in general, Meta-Stability imparts a calming, mature mindset to the rampant AI.

Rampant AIs tend to have long-term goals, with distasteful methods that inevitably bring about positive benefits, though sometimes those benifits are not immediately seen.
