Uprising!
« on: February 22, 2008, 10:19:30 PM »
Deputy Premier Charles La Folette walked up to the National Assembly of Quebec. The white painted building was a reminder of an age when the Varkourians ruled over Quebec and not the damned Inglishmen and their Canadian puppets. La Folette smoothed out his suit and walked into the building. He nodded to the secretary. Charles walked upstairs to his office. Then he closed the door. Conspiracies need to happen behind closed doors. He sat in his chair and pressed a button on his phone. "Marie, send him in please." The door opened and a fierce looking man came in. He sat down in the chair opposite of Charles' desk. "An honor to meet you Deputy Premier."

Charles nodded. 'A pleasure to meet you too, Mr...?"

"Hawkins....Call me Hawkins."

Another Inglo-Quebecois traitor. Oh well, he will be useful. "Alright, Mr. Hawkins, I have a job for you. Here is the assignment."

Charles passed him a folder. Hawkins opened it. He looked through it thoroughly. "When and how do you want this done?"

Charles closed his hands. "I need this done as soon as possible, and it needs to look like an accident." Hawkins nodded. He got up and walked out. Charles sat back in his chair. Vive la République du Québec

Alia was watching the news in her palace. The world was on fire. PI and AC fleets fighting on the high seas, Canadian armies in Acadia trying to get over the Wier River, Valideen offensives in southern Acadia, the loss of Aemillia to the Acadian Navy and Army.  Nothing new. But something caught her eye. The newscaster was talking about some incident in Quebec.

"The Premier of Quebec, Jean Claude-Phillipe, was murdered today. It was a tragedy for the province. The leader of the independence movement had been working for the independence of his province for years. But now, the Deputy Premier, Charles La Folette is now Premier. Seen by some as a militant, Premier Charles was as patriotic to independence as any. Here is the new Premier at his inauguration ceremony."

The screen switched to a small, but strong looking Quebecois man wearing blue and white. The crowds were cheering. When they stopped, he spoke. "I am your new Premier, Charles La Folette and I am proud to be your representative. The death of my colleuge and mentor as been a hard burden to bear. The federal government in Ottawa are telling us that they will find the one responsible for the death of the Premier. But we know the truth, don't we. The Ottawa regime are out to destroy our independence movement. No more. We know that the federal government did this. They are responsible. These are not people who we need to be associated with. As of this day forward, the province of Quebec no longer exists. The Republic of Quebec has been declared by the National Assembly today. I have authorized the creation of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Quebec with myself as President. We are now independent. All Quebecois are free. I call on the Quebecois units in the Canadian military to resist the imperialists and to fight for our freedom. I have organized a sizable military here. To freedom and the Republic of Quebec." Alia could hear the cheers from the people. She turned off the T.V. and picked up the phone. "William, call an emergency meeting of Parliament, now!"

Parliament Hall was filled to the brim. Cameras were present and this meeting was being broadcast to the entire country, including Quebec. Alia sat on her blue velvet throne while her mother took the seat next to her. Lord Protector William King limped up to his throne. His cane was in hand. The leg injure that he suffered on factory machinery when he was younger had left him walking with a cane for the rest of his life. As he sat down, the Speaker of the Senate started.

"The provincial government of Quebec have declared their independence as the Republic of Quebec. We must decide what to do. The Constitution doesn't necessarily say a province cannot secede..."

"But then it doesn't they can!" yelled out a Conservative MP.

"Here, here!" came a reply by a member of the Progressive Party. "I say hang them all."

"Silence." called out the Speaker. "We need to further discuss this."

"It's all the Socialists' fault and they damn commie ways." called out a Liberal MP. That started some sparks. Socialists and Liberals stood up and started to argue. The Speaker's efforts were not heeded. This was getting out of control. Alia had enough. "Enough!!!" sghe cried with all her strength. The MPs stood in shock. They sat down. The Speaker stepped down and let Alia take the podium. "We are at war with Feneixia and Acadia, Myroria isn't talking to us, and now Quebec has seceded. I have had enough of this bickering between parties. I am enacting the War Measures Act. The province of Quebec is now at a state of emergency. The miltiary now has full authority to deal with these militants. We will bring the Quebecois back into the confederation, one way or another."

Arch-Ecclesiast Matthew Staughton of the American Illuminist Chapter was unnerved by the news he watched. The chaos in Dysanii was unavoidable, but this new violence... this was unnecessary, there was no need to Canadians to be killing their brothers. His white silk robe draped over his shoulders, rustling with the movements of his arm as he reached for the phone. "Brother Thomas, I want a public statement issued condemning this violence. These Quebecois are going to bring even more blood to this soil, and for what? A parliament that does whatever they want? Their grievances are mundane, they've lost sight of the value of life."

A voice agreed with him on the other line, and the two discussed the document. Twenty minutes later the message was sent to Canadian media.

Quote
No law, whether decreed by the divine or by man, gives any man the right to take the life of another. To do so is to deprive that man of his humanity, and it is not our place to judge a man. Your fight does not lie in blood and iron, it lies in words, values, culture, and the cherishment of life. Would you forsake the essence of your being, the core of your values, to give yourselves that which the truest of hearts tells you is wrong to steal. To earn what you desire, you create for yourself the means to attain this, not forge for yourself the tools to destroy your neighbors. Did you not suffer equally in war, did not both Canadia and Quebecois bleed and die in trenches? Why now must Canadians seek to destroy each others families so soon after their freedoms were tested?

I beg of you as a humble man, do not spill innocent blood for greed. Unite together in brotherhood and forge a future together, for the good of all.

Light's Graces,
Matthew Staughton

Statement from the Imperial Family

The Libertarian Monarchy of Myroria recognizes the independence of the Republic of Quebec. If the Quebecois are so culturally independent, it logically follows they should be legally so.

ooc: I haven't posted in my Nation News for some time, I hope it's not unappropriated to post here.

ic:
Q-"Senhor Amaral, what perspective do you have for the recent events in the Republic of Quebec"

A-"If you mean prospectives, there's one of the two chances that Republic of Quebec turns into a free Canadian icon, as still being culturally attached to the Canadians, because one thing is the language and some few other costumes, other is their way of life, that has been by all times Canadian, and still, manage to be an autonomous region, maybe economically and politically detached from Canada. Another chance would be that this is a failed state, and I'm more inclined to the second chance. For my knowledge, Quebec alone does not have enough strenght to compete in a global economy, although it's industry is well acclaimed, the market is generated by the Canadian empire, one thing that they managed to steal from the liberals. Quebec's problem is not just economic...

Q-"How could they survive in the global economy?"

A-"I'll get there, Quebec's problems is extended to the administrative and specially judicial level, they have the option of creating their own affairs, that will take time and I don't think it's necessary, another option is to accept Canada's judicial system, as a joint system, and the administrative is ruled as autonomous region. This is how Quebec can survive, also in a global economy, being an autonomous extent of the Canadian empire.

Q-"I see, but then how free can they be?"

A-"That's what they have to decide. I have no regards to the people involved in this, because I never heard of them. But how free can they be? How much autonomous want they to be? This will always involve sacrifice, they will have to chose what to sacrifice the most."

Q-"So, do you not support this action to create the Republic of Quebec?"

A-"Of course I support, it's a beautiful thing to see people fighting for themselves, and I hope everything is resolved diplomatically. But this issue is Canadian alone, I'm against any kind of foreign interference unless it starts to involve the factor of human lives. I'm just not sure if this new leaders are up for the challenge. Besides talks, I haven't seen much actions from them."

Q-"Are you saying they're being too romantic?"

A-"That's exactly what I'm saying, but the people like romantic, don't they?"

Q-"I understand, but now you speak about people, how do you think this Quebeckians will react."

A-"I believe that they can manage themselves, if the vast majority is willing to support this "Republic of Quebec" ideal, they will be able to overcome any problem, we know better, look how bad our economy was when the southern regions united with the northern ones, it was good for the tribals, but look how badly the Sabbasburg Stock Exchange was damaged, and look how much the Bolsa Nacional de Delfingrado have grown over the years..."

Alia overlooked the reports. They weren't good. Support for a war to retake Quebec was not a popular idea among the people. Some people had family in Quebec and a war will bring death. "Is this what my father felt when the RLF tried to overtake the country?" Finally something caught her eye. Myroria had recognized the Republic of Quebec as an independent nation. Fine, Maurice can support the Quebecois, but when he finds out what grows in my belly, he may change his mind. Her people wouldn't care if she wasn't married, but the Myrorians may not be happy when they find out Maurice impregnated an outsider. Back to the moment at hand. Though she was a constitutional monarch and nothing more then a figurehead, Alia still liked to overlook reports and put in her own imput. Finally, the good stuff. Reports from her spies in Quebec.

A statement from the The Chairperson and The Board of the Allied States of Bustos-21

The Allied States openly recognizes and welcomes the sovereignty of the Republic of Quebec.  We encourage business between our two nations.

OOC:  These are inside thoughts within The Board.

If it weakens our rival, it strengthens us.

Buy their products.  I bet we can get them cheap now.

Sell them all the weapons, ammo, and supplies we can for their rebellion.

And accept only gold or precious minerals in exchange.

President Charles La Folette looked over the recognition of independence from many nations. One caught his attention. The Allied States of Bustos. "I knew Canada's economic rival would decide to recognize us. Perhaps an economic alliance would be good." He looked over reports of the new nation's economy. It wasn't as strong as it was when Quebec was a Canadian province. "What to do?" A ring came from his phone. Charles picked it up. "President Charles La Folette speaking."

"Hello, Mr. President. This is Empress Alia. Can you put me on screen. there is something I wish to talk to you about."

What does she want? He turned on the screen in front of his desk. The siluette of the young Canadian monarch was on it. "Good morning, Charles."

"Morning, Your Majesty. What may I ask is the occasion for this meeting?"

Alia smiled. "The economic union between Canada and Quebec."

Charles almost fell back in his chair. Only a week ago, a Canadian army had camped out on the border and the Grand Fleet had sent a battle fleet to blockade the harbors. "An economic union? What do you mean?"

Alia clicked some files on her computer and the files opened up on Charles screen alongside Alia. "An ecomomic union called the Sovereignty-Association. The Republic of Quebec can continue to use the strong Canadian dollar instead of make a weaker Quebecois currency. Your economy as a province was one of the strongest in Canada, but you had barely any agriculture and lumber industry. The Canadian government will continue to trade with you as if you were a province, in exchange, you continue to make products for Canada. You would have political, military, and judical independence, but we both know that Quebec's economy won't be able to compete in the global market. But if you have an economic union with Canada, you will be able to compete on the global market. Neither your nation nor mine would suffer in the global market. WHat do you say?"

Charles nodded. "I will run this through the Assemblée Nationale. But personally I like it. So does this mean you are letting the Republic of Quebec go as an independent country?"

Alia breathed deep. "If the people believe that Quebec is so different from the other Inglophones, then you have our blessings. Congratulations on your independence, President La Folette. May God shine down on your nation." The screen went black. Charles smiled and rubbed his hands together. "Maybe I was wrong about her?" He picked up his phone. "Assemble the Assemblée Nationale."

Hello and congratulations on your new founded independence Mr. President.  My name is Cherub Redstone and I run economic operations of the Allied States government and its holdings.  I am afraid I could not locate your delegate in charge of your economic operations so I am contacting you.  The Chairperson and The Board have authorized me to open trade negotiations between our nations.  The Allied States deals in free trade with all nations however, I can aid in the interest in meeting your nations specific needs and at greatly reduced prices to help ensure your independence.  I would personally like to meet with you or your person in charge of your economic operations to discuss further details and how I can be of service.

Alia smiled when the screen went blank. He really thinks that I will give up Quebec this easily. She rummaged through the papers until she came to one that made her jump inside. Something that would keep her hands clean in the next few weeks. The Quebecois units on the field have hardly done anything against the Canadian government. It was the reservists that were a problem. They want to be real soldiers and fight for independence. She needed to find someone who she could convince that La Follete had murdered the Quebecois Premier in order to gain independence. A war against Quebec would be wrong in the public's eyes, but if a resistance group had formed and fought the new government, then perhaps the Canadians could then be able to re-enter Quebec as province once again. Alia thought on it for about an hour. She picked up the phone and dialed a number. "This is Monarch Butterfly. Let's begin. Good job, Perfect Storm." All the way in the capital of Quebec, Quebec City, the man known as Perfect Storm hung up and smiled. He had worked hard to get a high position in the Republic's government. Now he had his orders. Time to start.
