Post by: Union on January 01, 2008, 09:08:56 AM
...Hello?

   Hey mom.

Meng!

Sorry I couldn't call sooner, but a order came through...I'm heading out to sea with the Mystica tomorrow.

Hilary called this morning. She said you left last night for Yaolin,...where are they sending you?

   I don't know...it came so suddenly...the Captain says it's just a routine exercise...

Heavens...then you'll be alright?

Y-yeah...nothing to worry about. You take care while I'm gone, okay? If you need anything, just call Hil-"

Meng...

   Yeah mom?

Be careful...

    .....I will ma...

July 21st, 2712

It's been two days since we set off for sea on orders of the Grand Admiral. Very little had been disclosed to us, only that this was a routine fleet exercise of some sort. But I'm beginning to suspect something, the whole affair just doesn't seem right...

We were only told our destination just as the Mystica left port. The Captain refused to say anything more, only that we were to steam for someplace call the Horn of Valhene, a point just northeast of a "defunct" Dysanii. The news was a surprise to all of us, what sort of business did the Fleet have in Dysanii? Whatever it was, the brass at Naval Command had deployed a lot of ships to this operation...a lot.

Just over our starboard deck, we could count several Type 54A frigates steaming alongside of us. Several hundred yards behind us, two venerable 52Bs missile destroyers followed behind, the Rivet Fire and Reverend. Along with the Mystica, we were to form the scout flotilla for the main fleet sailing a hundred klicks behind us. I was told, by a fellow CH, that this was the largest assembly of warships ever in the history of our Fleet.

More astonishing news came at lunch today, when we received word that the L.N.S Anyia, proud flagship of the Loyanese Navy, will be joining us in our voyage. It was then that we knew that something was up. To steam so far away from home for a "routine" exercise, one that involve so many ships and our only carrier,...even a grease monkey CH like me knows something daunting is in store for us. I just hope I'll live through it, whatever it is.

I got a call from Ma just before dinner. Turns out today was the last day at the hospital for my sister and her newborn daughter. Of course, mom was grinding me for not being able to pick them up from the hospital along with her. Then she went on to ranting about me continuing the stupid tradition of navy service in the family. Oh well, I'll be sure to visit them the first day I get back. Hilary emailed me a stunning picture of them, Vian and my new niece. I had the picture printed out by Ensign Ayin (who then made a joke about the amenity of my family genes, then ask me if I had a single brother or handsome cousin).

I clipped the picture to my bunk desk, right beside a picture of Hilary and Ma. They will keep me company once we enter the cold waters of the South Continent.

August 10th, 2713

We've enter the the proximate waters of the South Continent. By now, the weather has gotten too cold for any of us to stand outside comfortably. The majority of the crew has shelter themselves inside, away from the chill and harsh winds.

For the first time in my life, I seen outcrops of glistering white marble floating on top of of the ocean, the mythical icebergs of school films and navy video manuals. It feels so strange looking at them from the window of the gallery, these mountains of solid white ice and snow. They serve as a reminder to us huddling in the heat of the gallery, that we were far from the tropical warmth of home and palm beaches with family.

We been observing radio silence for the last five days. Email and telephone privileges were cut, and the daily calls from Ma and Hilary came to an end. Boredom and homesickness was beginning to set among myself and the rest of the crew. I pass the time with cards with my co-CHs during my shifts in the engine room. The rest of the time, I slept or hang around in the galley, talking with other bored crewhands trying to make sense of our situation. Little else had been reveal by the captain and officers who were determine to keep us in the dark.

By now, we were around 900 klicks from the tip of the Dysanii peninsula. Ensign Ayin had hints me that our flotilla will be slowing down to a stop by tomorrow morning. We'll be join shortly by the main fleet at noon. The news was a little bit of cheer, perhaps tomorrow we can find out the hell reason we're doing here. But if it turns out we're engaging in combat tomorrow...hell that be a bad surprise.

I wonder how the outside world is taking this strange event. A naval fleet this large...do I dare call it an armada?...it can't go unnoticed for long. No doubt the rest of the world is pondering on what the hell we're up to.

OOC: Task Force Orion contains the following - 5 Cherry Class frigates  (Real Life Halifax Class), 2 Arleigh Burke class destroyers, 1 Intrepid Class Fleet Carrier (Invincible class Aircraft Carrier) and 2 Spencer Class Attack Submarines (Real Life LA Class Attack Subs)

IC: "Captain, message from Maritime Command,"

"Lets hear it," said the Captain as he walked over to the young sailor.

"It says, 'ATTN:: IVS Ark Angle... Intel states that a large flotilla of Loyanese warships are proceeding towards DYSFOR naval patrol sector...TASK FORCE ORION ordered to proceed to **CLASSIFIED lvl3; Computer Direct Input** to intercept Loyanese naval vessels... Action Stations are to be sound when TG-ORION enters Maximum combat range of TG-ORION ships.
ROE:: Self Defence engagements only. Boarding Parties to standby in case vessels enter DYSFOR patrol sector.
END TRANSMISSION::...'"

"Helm, do you have the coordinants?"

"Aye Captain," said a man standing in front of a computer screen and control panel, which to his left was a throttle stick and wheel.

"Transmit it to all ships in the Group. Coms, inform DYSFOR HQ of our Orders."

"Aye, captain" said both the Helm and the Coms.

"Captain, all ships report ready." said the ships Helmsman.

"Also sir, DYSFOR HQ reports they have received the information from Maritime Command." stated the Coms Operator.

"Set a course."

Seconds later the entire fleet started turning to port and head out to the blue water of the ocean.

A Loyan fleethas been spotted approaching the Valhene peninsula. Valideen Task Force Orion has departed to intercept. As of yet, their intentions are unclear, but I think it is clear what they are. I offered the Valideen to have our two frigates, the CFS Giorgios and Efstratios, join up with them but they preferred we stay behind. All DYSFOR personnel are on full alert.

With other Pax Imperium nations right next door, DYSFOR could be in trouble. Should the shit hit the fan, I assume they would keep up their side of the agreement?

"Lord Admiral Hudson, we have the report you wanted." said the commodore. He handed the Lord Admiral of the Fleets the document. They were satellite pictures of large numbers of warships. "These were taken ten minutes ago. The Valideen seem to be responding to the Loyanese fleet has a threat. What do you propose we do?"

Marko looked once more at the photographs. "The High Seas Fleet is not far from the Loyanese position. Tell the rest of the fleet to continue their course and continue with the exercises. The Inglish Columbia and her escorts will meet up with the Loyanese. If this is going to be a show of force, then we will make a show. The closest Loyanese ships are a small flotilla leading them. We are to intercept and make sure nothing wrong happens. What ships are our escorts."

The commodore looked through the list of ships with them. "We have three destroyers, the Iroquois, the Huron, and the Athabaskan. Then we have two Halifax frigates, the Ville de Quebec and the Pentiction. Then we have one Brandenburg frigate, the Samuel de Champlain, and two Vanguard submarines, the Vengance, and the Vigilant. Those are all of our escorts."

"Then order the captains of these ships to change their course and escort us to the Loyanese flotilla. Tell the helmsman to go to 32 knots, our fastest speed. At those speeds, we should reach the flotilla before the Valideen do. Commodore, put us a red alert. I don't want to fire at the Valideen, but I don't want to be caught with my pants down."

The commodore saluted. "Aye, sir." While he relayed the admiral's orders, Marko could feel as the massive missile cruiser Inglish Columbia moving to meet with their allies. What are the Loyanese up to? He knew that the Inglish Columbia was one of the most powerful ships in the world ever since it's refit from a battleship to a missile cruiser. But all he hoped was that he didn't need to put that to the test. He went outside onto the deck. Marko could see that the deck missile doors were open in case of an attack. Like the other sailors, he wore a heavy black peajacket to keep him warm from the cold. On his head was a bear-fur hat that was common among Canadian sailors and soldiers as a cold-weather headgear. His thick black gloves held the railing. This was indeed a strange day.

Feniexian Sector Control, Military Headquarters

"Incoming transmission from the MI Sector Division, Sir. Shall I switch them to main channel?"
Sector Administrator Hales nodded, and then turned his chair and himself toward the monitor installed on the wall of his office. "Channel opened. Receiving transmission." a female voice sound sample from the monitor's speakers announced. On the screen, a well known face appeared. Hales had been working together with his friend Watanabe on various MI operations until he got promoted. "Greetings, DisCom Watanabe. What is the reason for your call?"

Watanabe began to speak, a bit nervous. "Greetings. Our satellites spotted a large amount of Loyanese ships advancing towards the southern coasts of Dysanii; I'm sending you the data for the digital map. Shall we inform the Citadel?"

"Well, I don't think that fleet poses any threat to us currently; continue observing them however. I'm interested on what may be their business with DYSFOR. And yes, send a short note to the Citadel; maybe that will finally convince the Citadel Military HQ to tighten our naval defense a bit."

Edit: Ew, thanks @Osamafune.

=Mystica=
--Captain's Log--
11/08/2712
...
They must have been alerted by our presence by now. We are still observing radio silence and all active sensors had been switched off. Our passive radar have reveal the Validean fleet presence around two hundred clicks away, eight hot bogeys steaming towards our position, along with a huge scatter of SEMR and IAR around a particular bogey which we suspect to be their aircraft carrier. We can't be sure until we launch a OTH scan tonight, as par schedule. We continue to monitor electronic traffic in our area, which has reveal a scurry of transmission from both Canadian and DYSFOR frequencies. I can only imagine what the world think of us and our intention at present.

Communication has been sketchy with Naval Command, the main fleet, and even within our own flotilla. Our laser communications with the flotilla ships had been made difficult by the rough seas, and we resorted to flag and light signals to transmit information within the flotilla. Ensign Ayin assures me that we'll get smoother waters once we steam west into the Gulf of Arcadia, where we will be heading after Magei finishes with her EI and data gathering. We continue to head westwards at ten knots, slow enough to allow the Validean flotilla to catch up.

The crew had been restless in pressing for answers. While I continue to keep my mouth shut, I find it hard to continue this charades of secrecy with the crew I raise and trust. Many of them are away from family and friends, so I can understand their agitation and despair. But, while this operation may have little meaning to these young navy grunts, I know this venture so far from home will help them mature into the professional sailors that our Fleet needs in this day and age. They will just have bare it a little more longer, and I'm sure they'll come out of it more skilled and experienced.
...

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Captain Lens enters the Control Room. A bustle of activity was going on within this central hub of the ship, and those at the console had little time to salute to Lens' presence. A few EOs gave a quick salute as he passes, then returns to the job at hand. Ensign Ayin came to greet him.

"Afternoon Captain," she salutes. "Those Validean boats are within 80 clicks of us, they been steaming towards us for the last 3 and a half hours."

The captain nods and proceeds to his seat in the center of the room. Ensign Ayin hands a few slips of paper to him.
"The Reverend has finished her EI task, she'll be sending us the data disc so we can pass it to Defense Intelligence."
The captain flips to the second slip of the report. "How did our own EI go?"
Ensign Ayin pulls out her notebook and reads it out. "Radar frequencies of the Validean vessels have been inputted into our ship database. Several other SEMRs and IAR frequencies have been capture as well and inputted for processing. We're augmenting radar signature collected by OTH from Captain Veng's Sea Hind, they dropped us a disc an hour ago. Also, a few Validean planes are up around our perimeter."

The captain puts the report into a folder by his chair. "Thank you Ensign, you're doing a great job. The Mystica should be place under your command."

Ensign Ayin grins at the compliment. "Just doing my job Captain."

"Of course you are," the captain murmurs. "Now, let's get to the next step of our mission operation. Signal the flotilla, we'll be conducting the scheduled CAD and gather mission. Signal Veng to have his Sea Hind up in the air and monitor the Valideans."

"Aye Captain," the Ensign replied, then turns to the HCO. "Ben, have the Hakin boys signal flotilla, DASH-SIX-NINE."
The HCO nods then took up the intercomm phone to get the flag signals going to Ensign Ayin's specification.

The captain turns to a EO at his left. "Yula, I want you to prepare our EW suite for a AF91 jamming protocol. Max strength. Ensign Ayin!"
"Yes captain?"
"Make sure our transponders still transmitting non-combatant clicks, but have our RAMs and countermeasures on standby. Sound Class C alarms."
"Yes captain!"
"Captain, flotilla ships have signaled back, code DASH-SIX-NINE-HOT."
"Bring us up to thirty knots, bearing 187. Yula, prepare to run the jamming protocol in twenty-two minutes!"
........................................................................................

While the rest of the flotilla stayed behind course, the Mystica unleashed a jamming pulse several miles away from the other ships. A Sea Hind was in the air to monitor the reaction of the Valideans, who doubt were picking up the full power pulse of the Mystica's jammer pods. The moment was a tense one for the Captain, who was unsure whether the Valideans will take the jam pulse as a threat of attack...either way, he would had unknowingly completed the goal of the operation...

A man in a black suit laid comfortably on his silk couch, enjoying the warmth of a wood fire burning in his white marble fireplace. In front of him, a 52 inch LCD TV rolls with images of the world outside, the slight panic created by the mysterious maneuvers of the Loyanese Fleet. A malevolent smirks scars his face as the news anchor announces the movement of the Canadian fleet towards the drama of the Horn of Valhene. He takes a sip of his imported scotch, mixing the warm satisfaction in his mind with the excellent taste of the $2000 per bottle drink.

Excellent, everything is going as planned...

Dispatch From Ambassador of Loyan

The PRL advises that the Canadians keep away from the situation developing in the Horn of Valhene. Do not endanger your ships.

The letter was sent from the Loyanese embassy in Ottawa, to the Foriegn Minister, who gave it to Marshal Worthington, who in turn sent it to Marko. Marko stared at it. They were less then 250 km away from the Loyanese positions. The Inglish Columbia and her escorts were now slowing down. Marko had to make up his mind. "Commodore Cartier, order the fleet to turn around and head back to the High Seas Fleet. But stay at red alert."

The commodore looked confused. "Sir?"

Marko continued. "The Valideen are still in the area and word has it that the Varkourian Navy is getting involved. The DYSFOR may percieve that the Canadians knew of this plan. So be at the ready. Also radio to Governor-Militant Currie in Port Royal and the General Staff in Ottawa, they may want to put the Canadian forces at a higher readiness in case something goes wrong."

Commodore Cartier saluted. "Aye sir. It will be done."

"Captain, Comms and Radio are being jammed. We can get Coms back but Radar is going to be a bitch."

"Work through it. Also send a transmission back to Maritime Command about whats going on." said the captain as he walked towards the windows at the front of the bridge. He looked down at the flight deck, which had a flight of VF-35 Lightnings. "Get the coordinants of that ship then launch a wing of Lightnings. I want to see what we can do about eliminating that threat."

"Aye, Sir."

"Sir," said the Coms Officer, "Maritime Command has put the fleet on standby, they are also positioning a satellite in geosynchronous orbit, to provide us with up to date images and fleet locations."

"Good,"

Soon the fighters were positioning themselves in order for take off, then they were off like a bullet in a matter of second the two fighters flew off the ramp at the front of the ship.

"S Hind signalling a DASH-SIX-FIFTY-COLD," the HCO shouted out.

The captain immediately turned to Yula. "Turn it off now! Phase array air radar on and countermeasures on high alert! All crew prepare to abandon ship!"

Ensign Ayin quickly switched on the air radar. Dash 650 Cold...what was that again? Then she remembers, and immediately knew what was going on. She checked the passive radar monitor...just that moment several bogeys popped up on screen and the alarm sounds.

"Several incoming bogeys!" the ensign cries out. "sixty-clicks and closing at Mach 1+, bearing 300!"

"HCO, dispatch to bridge! Tell the Lieutenant to steer hard on mark! Now!" the captain shouted out. "Ensign, target only munitions headed for us, do not engage the planes!"

"Sir!" she protested. "Targeting the planes will give us a higher chance..."

"You stand down on that comment! We're on strict orders not to engage!"

""But Sir!"

"Captain! Air search is picking up nothing! Possible stealth bogeys!"

"Monitor with passive and optical! Put RAM on manual, target only munitions! All crew prepare to abandon ship!"

The two aircraft carriers of the High Seas Fleet turned to the direction of the Loyanese fleet. Word had come that the Valideen had sent in fighters. Admiral Charles Davidson was in command of the High Seas Fleet from the largest of the two carriers, the Artorion-class supercarrier George Artorion I. He looked over at the Viraat-class carrier Remembrance. They were preparing their fighters. The Admiral turned on the intercom. "This is Admiral Davidson. I want a full-strength wing up and sent to the corridinates of the Loyanese fleet. We are not to engage unless fired upon, but I want you to be aware." He hung up the intercom. The room went red as full battle stations was called. "How did a normal exercise turn into a rescue mission?"

Lord Admiral Hudson listened as a distress beacon came to the Inglish Cloumbia from the Loyanese fleet. He knew the missile cruiser wasn't far from the Loyanese. He turned to the helmman. "Take the ship straight to the Loyanese. Put us at the fastest speed you can get to do. They need help."

Commodore Cartier looked at the admiral. "What about the rest of the High Seas Fleet?"

Marko gave Cartier a report. "The rest of the High Seas Fleet is on it's way. But we are the closest to the Loyanese."

Cartier nodded. The intelligence officer at the radar turned his chair. "Admiral, Commodore, we have an entire wing of Avro Arrow IIs flying to the Loyanese."

Marko looked at the screen. "Good, now the Valideen are about to play a dangorous game of chess."

The Avro Arrow IIs moved towards the Loyanese fleet. Naval Wing Commander Daniel O'Niel watched as a silouette of a Loyanese vessel came into view. Lucky for him that the Avro IIs had stealth capabilites, so the Valideen won't pick them up for a while. The twenty Avro IIs were not as powerful as the the F-35s, but they had speed and manuverability that the F-35 could only dream of. So Wing Commander O'Niel knew that if a battle broke out, that would be his advantage, as well as numbers. He decided to radio the Loyanese ships.

"This is Naval Wing Commander Daniel O'Niel of the Canadian Navy, calling the Loyanese commander. We are here to help you. I have twenty jets under my command, and the Inglish Columbia with her escorts should be here any minute. The High Seas Fleet has deemed it neccesary to aid you. The rest of the fleet will be arriving soon after the Inglish Columbia.

OCC: The Avro Arrow IIs resemble large modren versions of the German Me-262 with stealth capabilities.

If the Loyan fleet is moving away, ignore them, we do not wish to start a conflict. Although we have tankers and fighters ready, and the secret emergency retaliation control is ready for action. The Delfian Command asks you to refrain from any aggression to this Mayonese fleet. Please ask your fighters to come to base. We can deal with their fleet at any time."

The Varkourian fleet had finally entered international waters north of the horn of Valhene and were heading towards the Validean fleet. Dassault Rafale pilots had been brought up to date with the situation and were told their services may be needed.

"Contact the Validean fleet, They may need help. Canadian ships have turned back around and are heading east fast."

Lord Admiral Hudson arrived at the area where the Loyanese fleet was. The Inglish Columbia moved to a better position near the Loyanese. He took out his binoculars. He could see a carrier, and two familiar battleships. "Those are the battleships we sold to the Loyanese. I didn't know they were here. Look's like the Loyanese have taken good care of the Inglish Columbia's sister ships." The commodore looked as well. Hudson took the radio. "Loyanese Commander, I am Lord Admiral of the Navy of the Greater Canadian Empire on board the heavy missile cruiser Inglish Columbia. We are here to escort you to safe Canadian waters and to the harbors of Vancouver, Prince Rupert and Anchorage." He hung up the radio and waited for a response.

Commodore Cartier could hear the scramble from a Selid ship near the zone where the four fleets were converging. Admiral Hudson gave him a nod. Commodore Cartier picked up the radio. "Merry Widow, this is the Canadian heavy missile cruiser Inglish Columbia. You are entering a dangerous zone. We advise you change your course for the Port of Halifax and you will recieve instructions from there. Respond." He waited for an answer. Hudson walked over. "This is the fourth merchant ship we have had to send to Halifax because they were entering this region. Well, this should be over soon."

"Ark Angel, this is flight. Zero offensive hostility, however ship is taking up a defensive posture, possibly perceiving flight as threat, over."

"Flight this is Actual, stay in sky, we have eagle eyes inbound for area RECCE over,"

"Flight, roger that Actual. Coming around for another pass on bogey vessel. Wait, something new, wait out."

Moments passed the four fighters flew low over the ship as it appeared the crew was abandoning the vessel.

"Actual this is Flight, Yellow are appearing to abandon the vessel, suggest we send in a Chop, over,"

"Actual, flight say again, over"

"Flight, I say again, Yellow is abandoning bogey vessel. I count four lift rafts in the sea, over."

"Actual, Roger that and wilco, over."

"Flight, roger out."

The captain of the Ark Angel placed the phone on the hook. "Prep a helicopter, looks like the Loyanese are getting ready to either scuttle their boat or are trying to keep our attention away from their advanced fleet. We need a chopper on the scene to investigate what the hell is going on."

Out on the flight deck a loan Cyclone naval helicopter began to be prepped for flight. Its crew disembarked from the interior of the large warship. It included the pilot, copilot, weapons operator, flight engineer, and rescue diver. Soon the familiar sounds of helicopter blades whipping through the air. The Chopper named VNH-139, piloted by Spin-Wheel. It headed off towards the horizon.

"Captain, they passed us! No munitions had been fired..."

The Captain let out a deep breath in relief, taking out a napkin from his pocket to wipe the sweat away. He regain his composure quickly then turned to a startled Ensign Ayin. "I think that's enough," he said. "Get everyone back on board. Signal the flotilla with DASH-SIX-EIGHTY...we're heading for Vancouver as planned."

August 14th, 2712

Last night was certainly one to remember. It all started when bridge suddenly putted some throttle to the turbines. I was working the night shift, boy was I surprised when the Class C alarms came on a few minutes later. All of us down in the engine room donned our life jackets and prayed. It was mind bending not knowing what was happening outside, we certainly thought that the Mystica had engaged in combat with an enemy.

We endured several minutes of stressful eerie against the whirring of the turbines and the sirens of the C alarm, waiting for something to happen...anything...an explosion, the hiss of our missile firing, maybe even a bang on the hull. We felt the ship turned hard to one side. Then came a sudden order from the Control Room for all Non-Ess personnel to abandon the ship. Too bad for me and my buds, we were part of the essential...

The walls of the engine room were built thick, several inches of armor plating that blocked anything softer than a direct missile impact from being heard by our ears. We did manage to catch the rumbling of something speeding across outside. We later found out it was the supersonic echo of two fighter aircraft flying over. It turn out that Validean flyboys were responsible the whole commotion. Hell, that was a scary moment. Most of the crew are still shock from the ordeal. We still had no idea what the Valideans were doing with that flyby, but the Captain assured us it was an misunderstanding. The old man is keeping something from us...I just know it.

Hopefully, everything we will tone down once we reach the Canadian port city of Vancouver. From what I heard, there's a rumour of a special event Headquarters had arranged there for us. And for some strange reason, I been called up to the Captain's office for some classified assignment. I just hope it doesn't evolve me getting into trouble...

Admiral Hudson could see the Loyanese fleet turn for Vancouver. He had gotten his acknowledgment. He turned to Commodore Cartier. "Tell the rest of the High Seas Fleet to help us escort the Loyanese to Vancouver, Prince Rupert and Anchorage." Commodore Cartier nodded. In a few minutes the High Seas Fleet was guiding the Loyanese out of the quarintine area and was guiding them to the safe west coast of Canada. Marko wiped the sweat from his brow. "That was close. I was afraid we would have to fight." Commodore Cartier nodded. "Aye, sir. The Valideen and Delfians were pushing hard. The Loyanese didn't look like they were going to back down."

Admiral Hudson nodded. "Speaking about the Loyanese." He picked up the radio. "This is Marko Hudson, Lord Admiral of the Navy of the Greater Canadian Empire, I wish to speak with your commanding officer. Acknowledge."

My friend, what is that you are doing with the Loyanese. You should know this, but in case you don't, they committed an act of aggression against the Valideen ships in the area by blocking their primary navigation and communication measures. Please respond.

The matter of the Loyanese fleet is open to you. We are escorting the Loyanese to the ports of Vancouver, Prince Rupert, and Anchorage. They will stay in port until the Canadian government gets the answers that it wants. The admiral of the Loyanese Fleet will be brought forward to discuss why he was there. When we are finished with the investigations, we will release any information you may want. The other reason we are escorting the Loyanese out of the zone, is because we as in the Canadian people do not want a war to start between two of our allies for unknown reasons. A war that would most likely have us drawn in. True, they committed an aggressive act against you, but you did not fire in return, so it seems you do not want war. If we continued to stay in the region, there would be a massive build-up of fleets and nothing would be found out. But at least our way, we can get answers and since we are a neutral party, it makes sense that we be the ones to find out why. We will relay any information to you when we get it.
