A police cruiser drove with traffic toward the east of Isla Imperiale. The officer, Lieutenant Gabriel Eertriv, had a "420" (drug bust) call from neighbors who saw smoke coming from windows and smelled distinctive Bustian marijuana. Eertriv picked up his two-way radio.
"Eep goon une 420 er quatier Riche Mohi." (We've got a 420 in [the] quarter [of] Rich Island)
He arrived to the scene in about 15 minutes. Gabriel exited his car and walked to the front door of the Georgian mansion. He rapped on the door several times, with no answer. Lieutenant Eertriv turned the knob and quietly entered. He could see smoke coming from a room upstairs. Unholstering his pistol, Gabriel climbed the stairs and turned into the room.
What he saw would be a horrible thing to have in your mind as you die.
There was a man smoking a joint, but that was routine. Next to him on the bed was the body of a dead woman, and the suspect was obviously showing quite deep affection for it. Gabriel was so surprised that the man in the bed had time to reach for his own pistol on the nightstand, shooting the officer three times in the chest.
The man shot the officer in the head between the eyes before running downstairs. He creaked the door open, looked for people in the street, and snuck out.
