Land Rush
« on: August 15, 2007, 05:34:07 AM »
353 km northwest of DSA, Early Autumn

cool wind from northeast, calm waters...

Captain Miga was writing in the ship log, when the voice of her subordinates caught her attention. The door to her cabin slowly opens, and her lieutenant walks in.

"Mam..." the Lieutenant salutes her. "The rest of the convoy has caught up, we're ready to land."

Captain Mira shuts the log book. "Tell Commander Shia to get his shore party ready to leave."
The Lieutenant nods, and backs back into the hall. His footsteps fade away as he exits out to deck.

Captain Mira herself proceeds to the bridge to take command. Her crew salutes her as she walks in. Through the windows, she can see a scenic profile of the land, a shore of white sand and palm trees. The water of the ocean was a clear opal blue, which shimmer in the strong light of the sun. It was an untouched paradise...

"Mam, the Shore Party A and B from the White Tail are in the water right now. Commander Shia asks if you wish to join them..."

"Tell him that I humbly decline his offer. I'll be staying onboard the Soulful for the remainder of this mission."

"Yes Mam..."
------------------------------------------------------

Shia and his Marines helped the surveyors' with unloading their equipment off the motor launch. Cameras, ropes, optical instruments, GPS...all the equipment needed to map out the coast. Shore party A and B had already set up operations further down the beach.

"Heaven this is a beautiful place...ever seen anything like this Commander?" said Bian, a Marine Drillmaster.

"Once...in Chi'an. I was with my girlfriend...." the Commander replies.

While the surveyors were off doing measurements and data collecting, Shia and his squad took a more freelance surveying of their own. With their MD-2 rifles sling on their backs, they creep into the jungle.

"We're gonna have a lot of cutting to do...so much trees..ow!"

"Watch out for those branches Private. And yes, there's gonna be a lot of chopping to be done."

"We can always napalm the place..."

The squad stumbles upon a clearing, where clutters of strange crimson red flowers were growing. They stop to admire the scene, laying down and taking a sniff of the exotic beauties. Shia picks up some and puts it into his satchel. Drillmaster Bie catches him doing this and loudly comments. "Commander, if you want to bring them back, you better pot them." Several privates gave out a light chuckle.

Shia ignores the suggestion and stands up. "Breaks over, back to the beach."

For the next two weeks, the surveyors mapped up the coast, taking soil samples and measurements of elevation and depth. The data was inputted into a mapping program at the end of each day. At the end of it, 521 km of shoreline was mapped.

The head of the surveying teams, Docter Hita Chen, reviews the data before it is sent off.

"Mr. Cho, you can send the data back to headquarters now. Tell them we have a pretty good spot for settling, on quadrant Z12-15. We'll need them to send in Phase 2 if we want construction to start."

Quadrant Z12-15 was a small inlet that feature a relatively flat shore with minimal forage. It was perfect location for the Loyalist's first settlement.

After the mapping data was received, urban planners in the Department of Population Control began plotting out the blueprints for the new settlement. It will be name Songhai, or "new sea".

In the harbour of Na Sui, government ships were being loaded with supplies and engineers. Due to conflict in the Americas, the convoy will be undefended as it journeys to its destination. Hopefully, this will avoid any problems with the DSA and SD.

The convoy set sails with three tankers, thirty transport ships, seventeen large cargo ships, twenty multi-purpose vessels, a crane ship, and a LN landing craft carrying 5000 LA personnel that will make up the Loyalist Territorial Army.

After a few close brushes with American warships, the convoy arrived at LZ12-15 five weeks later. Engineers came on shore and began construction on a makeshift pontoon pier to unload the larger vessels. It took around one week to complete and securely anchor the pier to the sea floor. The cargo and transport ships began unloading the supplies onto shore while engineers started on a second pier.

On shore, a temporary camp was set up and bulldozers began clearing and leveling the area define by the blueprints. Surveyors mark off the roads and zones of the future settlement. Supplies and men continue to be ferry in from home, and construction of the city Admin began.

By mid-winter, a total workforce of 30 000 was present at LZ12-15, working around the clock to complete Songhai. An additional 20 000 LA personnel are ship to the area to further reinforce the Loyalist position in case of "foreign opposition".

Back in the capital, the Loyalist government drafted out the political details of their territorial claim.

Quote
As of Today,

The free lands outlined is hereby claim as a territorial jurisdiction by the People's Republic of Loyalist. This claim is further reinforce by our active development and military presence in the said areas. We humbly ask that nations of the international community recognize and respect our territorial claim, as a extension of our sovereignty.

In Songhai, the construction has reach a fever pitch. Deep ditches run across the marked streets, where water and sewage pipes will be laid. In the center of the city, the first of many government buildings are erected. Across the build sites, cranes lift up and place the tall steel poles that will support the power lines essential in bringing the city alive.

The pontoon piers has been replace by three steel frame ones. A large ship attempts to dock on Pier 3, it's bulky mass being nudge into place by several tugboats.

"What's that ship?" A engineer asks as he picks up a coil of steel cable.

"That's the SS-32, straight out from Yaolin. It's a desalination plant vessel that turns saltwater to fresh. We're gonna need it once we start pouring in the concrete. Come on, we got a power pole to tie down."

The two walked out from Supply Yard 32 and heads to the east part of their sector, when they heard gun shots...

"What the shit!"

"Shit! Mie, get down!"

320 yards away from the two engineers, a firefight had broken out between a unknown group and a LA patrol near the edge of the jungle.

"TOWER 5 TOWER 5! This is Patrol 32! We're being engage!" A private frantically screams into his radio. He and his squad were pinned down behind a bundle of wooden crates. Shots flew at them from the jungle forage.

"Shit! They're in the bushes. Tili! can you get a shot?!?"

"Can't see shit Sarge!...Hong, hand me your flash grenade!"

"Here!"

Tili caught the grenade in his hand, pulled the pin, and lops it in the jungle. "Everyone down!" he screams.

A bright flash streaks out, and the shots suddenly died. They were replace my agitated voices.

"MOVE OUT!"

The squad jumps out from their cover and runs towards the trees with rifles ready. A private gets hit by a bullet and falls backwards. The squad opens fire onto their invisible targets, spraying the forage with burst fire.

Soon, they saw the faces of their assailants. A close range melee frenzy erupts with the Loyalists pulling out their machetes and the enemy with bayonets. "You want to mess with me!" Tili screams out as he takes a slash at his opponent.

More Loyalist soldiers arrive to reinforce Patrol 32, and the mystery attackers begin to file out and retreat into the woodwork. At the end of it, three Loyalist soldiers were killed and two critically injured.

"Lieutenant! We got a live one here!" said a private from Patrol 31. His rifle points at a curled bulk on the ground.

Lieutenant Negin of Tower 5 walks toward the spot. Laying on the ground was a man in camouflage gear. A M-16 and camouflage helmet laid dropped beside him. The man himself was white skinned, his chest moving up and down as he struggles to breath. Negin moves closer to expect the man, and catching sight of two chest wounds. "Private, get a medic up here!" The Lieutenant proceeds to take off the man's clothes to expect the wound, when his eyes caught something on the man's sleeves...

Stitched on the right sleeve were military markings and a badge flaunting an eagle behind a shield. Text, distorted by dirt, was stitched below the eagle. The Lieutenant leans down to take a closer look.

"Ahh, hell...."

Back in Anyia, the Loyalist government was scrambling to make sense of the events in Songhai.

Loyalist International Territories Project Meeting:

"There were a total of fifteen attacks, spaced within a two day time frame..."

"Heaven, this is a mess. Do we have any conclusive evidence on who they are and their motives?"

"Other then the DSA military uniform, we got no leads on who these people are. I ask the Foreign Ministry to forward a message to the DSA, but I doubt they'll have time to give us a immediate respond, with the cease-fire and all."

The project managers eyes at each other, everyone was stumped on what to do. It was a really delicate situation.

General Yen of the LTA opens his mouth to speak. "Look Paul, my boys aren't train to fight this kind of warfare. It gonna be hard deterring these insurgents, especially with a jungle surrounding us. We're gonna need to play offensive here."

"Yen's right. We sent in a couple of people in to make contact, none of them has return yet. These guys don't seem to be playing nice here. If we don't protract a viable military response, the completion of Songhai maybe jeopardize."

"Heaven, we're in a tough spot...." responds an agitated Paul Shen, head manager of the LIT project.

"Paul?"

"I hate to do this, but have Draft A44 ready to pass to Parliament by tomorrow afternoon."

One of project managers stood up in shock. "A44? You're not really going ahead with it? It's madness!"

"We need firm action if we want this colony up, the State is counting on us to make a home in Songhai. We can't  play nice forever."
----------------------------------------------------

Five day later, Draft A44 is pass by Parliament on a 5-2 favour. The LIT project team is authorized to take unrestricted military action in securing the LIT. Equipment and combat personnel were loaded onto ships heading for Songhai:

-10 000 additional LA personnel
-two self-propel artillery batteries
-10 Hind gunships
-large quantities of WP munition
-Maser Area Denial systems
-various small arms and gear
-two Special Op LAW teams
-50 IMP-1s
-fifty-thousand ballistic vests

In Songhai, the Loyalists set up makeshift defenses (fences and barbwire) around the build site. LA patrols were put on high alert and engineers were more attentive to their surroundings as they work. As a result, work slows down to a reduce pace.

January 23rd

Songhai

"I like to welcome all of you to this tour orientation, I am Commander Cho of the LIT Field Staff. I will be briefing you today on the details of your mission here, namely on what you will be facing here.

If you can all turn to this slide show...there we go, start right here, Sarge.

These are various snapshots of enemy insurgents that has been harassing our position. Currently, we suspect they are DSA refugees and/or MIA Democratic military. Their motives are unknown, but we do know that they don't want us here...and this is where the military comes in.

You boys are one of the few in the LA that actually went through jungle warfare training back home. It is for this reason...that you been assign to this "all-important" mission. Now, the jungles here are pretty much the same as the ones home, but this time, we are on the offensive. Yeah, talk about fucked up...

We'll go into details on tactics later on, for now we'll get you familiar with the terrain...."

A sturdy cinder block fence surrounds the inner perimeters of Songhai, fitted along the length with barbwire, motion lights, and fortified towers. The border of Songhai was turn into a impenetrable minefield, an effective obstacle and alarm that will hamper any future attacks.

Along with laying mines, the Loyalist military also took efforts to clear some of the jungle around them. Hinds  dropped white-phosphorus bombs onto several sections, burning up trees and forage that can be used as cover by the insurgents. The gunships also ran reconnaissance over the lush jungle, looking for the camps and settlements of the insurgents.

The gong and bells have sound! Let the guns advance and our future move forward.
