Read any good books lately?
« on: January 22, 2007, 08:44:44 AM »
I figured it wouldn't hurt to start a book suggestion thread (how literary of me, I know, I know). But at least this way we can recommend good books to one another. :)

Earlier this month I finished Amy Tan's latest novel, Saving Fish from Drowning. I would give it a 9 out of 10, which is pretty much expected from an author like Amy Tan. It has a reasonably fascinating story line, and Amy Tan is absolutely excellent when it comes to sharing a whole new perspective. Saving Fish from Drowning is a really good page turner, and I enjoy the fact that Tan likes to introduce fancier vocabulary through context clues. It's about 475 pages, and it's about what happens to several different American tourists who get kidnapped in the jungles of Mynamar (aka, Burma). If you have the time, I would suggest you read it.

Any other suggestions out there? Give it a rating, why it got that rating, and whether you recommend it or not. And try to keep the summary of the book down to one line, to keep things interesting. ;)

I have recently began the high-fantasy epic, George R. R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire. I have finished the first 2 book, Game of Thrones and A Clash of Kings, both of which were highly entertaining and kept me reading for hours. I have just started on the third of seven installment, A Storm of Swords. All of these-so far- have been about an epic struggle for the Iron Throne of Westeros, along with a few other storylines. I highly reccomend the series to anyone who likes fantasy.

I have read the book Jonathan Livingston Seagull a couple times, its still one of my favorites. 10/10
It's pretty short actually, and can be very inspirational.

It is quite a nice series, that Song of Ice and Fire.

I also like Tolkien (obviously), and rather alot Bujold's Miles series.

I'm reading "The Earth Will Shake: The History of the Early Illuminati" by the recently deceased Robert Anton Wilson, which I am thoroughly enjoying. It's an interesting blend of fiction and non-fiction (despite the subtitle, it is a novel, not a history book).

I just finished reading a graphic novel on Louis Riel called Louis Riel that is quite entertaining... not your typical graphic novel.

I am in the process of reading A Spot of Bother by Mark Haddon, which is quite a good book, from what I've read so far!

Snowcrash is what I would recommend for a read. How can you hate a book where the main character's name is Hiro Protagonist and his friend is Da5id?

The Prince one of the best leadership books out there!

The Art of War is a good read if you can see through it to apply it to modern life.

Jennifer Government is still better than Snowcrash, and it always will be. Nineteen Eighty-four too.

I do not believe you are correct in your assesment of Jennifer Government vs Snow Crash. You have not read Snow Crash.
