Title: Candy Causes Suspension
Post by: Mahasoor on March 12, 2008, 11:45:54 PM
Student suspended for buying Skittles at school
NEW HAVEN, Connecticut (AP) -- Contraband candy has led to big trouble for an eighth-grade honors student in Connecticut.

Michael Sheridan was stripped of his title as class vice president, barred from attending an honors student dinner and suspended for a day after buying a bag of Skittles from a classmate.

School spokeswoman Catherine Sullivan-DeCarlo says the New Haven school system banned candy sales in 2003 as part of a districtwide school wellness policy.

Michael's suspension has been reduced from three days to one, but he has not been reinstated as class vice president.

He says he didn't realize his candy purchase was against the rules -- although he did notice the student selling the Skittles on February 26 was being secretive.

k!  So my initial response is YOU'RE KIDDING ME and woooooooow.  Things have definitely changed since I was in elementary/junior and high school.  I know you can't have aspirin on your person anymore either.  What else can you think of that's changed since you were in school that just makes your mind boggle?  Thoughts?

I think this is crazy.  SKITTLES.  NOT CRACK.

School administration being completely unreasonable?  That's not a new thing, sadly.  They follow the law to the letter and don't give a damn about the future of the students.

I knew some high school near me where a couple of the sports teams terrorized the rest of the student body, day in day out, and the administration didn't do a thing about it.  I understand the difficulties of dealing with bullying, but it was clear that all the principal cared about was having a winning season.  If I had had a kid at that school, I would have threatened that bastard principal with legal action.  Of course, that's sort of the opposite case.  I'm definitely happy to be done all that, in any case.

Oh, I realize it's not at all a new thing which I find really unfortunate.  I wasn't subjected to the public school system for what it's worth.  What surprised the hell out of me was that it was over skittles this time.  I'm used to seeing it over something like hair (ohio suspends kindergarten student for mohawk recently) or an eight-year-old having a steak knife to cut her lunch, but really, skittles?

OMG THAT KID IS TASTING THE RAINBOW BAN HIM.  Just crazy.

Hey, don't knock the school for being strict; they are protecting our nation's children from the clear and ever-present danger of cavities.  God forbid they should neglect that to chase after solutions to "problems" like violence, gangs, and drug use.  Yeesh, have you people no priorities?

Ignorance of school rules is no excuse.  I think they should take him to court because this is a commerce issue.  If punk kids can just go to cosco and peddle quality goods, at low low prices, how will small businesses stay in business doing the same.  Good for the school.

On a second note they should of done a sting for the skittles.  :D

Indeed!  At last, a man with some sense!  Bring in candy-sniffing dogs once a week during a mandatory lock-down and search all the cars, lockers, and classrooms!

always hate people who say they werent subjugated to public education, makes me lose respect for them.

I went to public school, and was subjugated to Private education (went to both).

Schools try to support and if they had more support would be better, support your local public school :D

As for the skittles that is awesome, hahaha, makes me smile, its stupid but still makes me smile. This comes from parents getting mad that there kids are getting fat so they blame everyone but themselves for it and the school has to respond by things like this, really stupid choices to placate the parents who dont want to admit they maybe just let there kids have to much junk food at home. :D

I don't think that's quite fair.  I've also been to both public and private schools, and each school had its own stupid, sometimes bizarre, set of rules.  One private school I went to actually prohibited the use of locks on lockers (wonder why they're called "lockers", then?) because it wanted to uphold its reputation of being thievery-free.  Yet at least once a week, someone had something stolen from their locker.  Great job keeping up your school's reputation, Principal Idiot.

was the not fair to the loss of respect or the subjugated to private school part. IF it was for the first I think it is completely fair, They are being elitist and Thus I loss respect for them

I think it's pretty unfair to say you lose respect for people based on something they had no choice in.  It's not like I had an option in where I spent my youth, school-wise.  My folks had the money and the inclination to make sure I received the best education they felt they could provide me.  It's not being elitist on my part, it's the parents doing what they think is best for the private school student.

Doesn't matter anyway :)

See you did have a choice in what made me loss respect. IT was not going to Private school, it was your elitist view that you where not Subjugated to Public. If you had said "I went to private school" I have no opinion, if you said "I didn't go to public school" equally no problem, when you say "I was never subjugated to public school" your being elitist and I loss respect, and it is fair to do that cause you did have a choice in what you say.

First of all, I said subjected, not subjugated.  And considering the quality of education I received at private school compared to the kids I know here who went to the public school system, I'm perfectly content with being elitist.  I can live with a random kid online thinking I'm a snob because I had a stellar education growing up.  Personally I think you're the one being elitist because you look down on people for doing one system over another, academically speaking.

edit And by not being "subjected to public school," I wasn't slammed by whatever ridiculous rules they had in place.  Instead I had to deal with other, equally as idiotic rules that private schools have in place.  So in the interest of getting this back on topic...  We had a rule at my elementary school that we weren't allowed to color our hair with markers.

That rule started showing up in our sixth year.  I don't miss that school at all.

I never said I had less respect for you for going to a public school, I said I loss respect for you cause of your elitism for going to a public school and saying those who didnt go to private Where Subjected to the public school. Sorry I still have lost repect for ya and will know not to consider your input in further debates I read while im bored At work with much salt.

So I still feel it is a fair reason to loss respect for ya,

during my public school we had one boy who was suspended for bringing a bag to school cause of the 9-11 no bags cause they may hide bombs, his parents sued the school for sexism cause he was wearing a purse, girls where allowed purses and a boy wasn't, his parents sued, they won. :D it was funny

One school I went to used to have rules you had to use Thou and stuff, the oldish speak so that everyone was equal or something weird. :D that stopped in the 80's though. When I was there they just had normal boarding school rules for the most part. Just had added you had to do farm duty every now and then, and I got suspended once for I think missing silent worship to much or something, it was a while ago about 6 years i think since my time at that high-school. :D

 Wow.  Go right ahead.  If that's going to be your approach, I invite you to being close minded.  I wouldn't want you to see things from a different point of view or anything.

 :-P

Also LOL at having to use thou, that would be too much fun.

The thou thing was odd, they talk about it and some teachers saying they wish they could bring it back... Weird frigen Society of Friends. Now that is an odd rule if Ive ever seen one

Also if you goty suspended you stayed at a staff members house hahahha, if you where a male that was actually the only way to get a private shower *shudder* but eh

And why I dont see your input as much is cause I know it will come from an elitist (and not cause you went to private school) :D man today is frigen slow at work... and yet they are making me work 6 days in a row cause its so busy... hmmmm interesting

Yeah, k.

We had a religion teacher wind up in prison for having sex in with (lol at typo) students.  As a result, female students had skirts removed from our dress code because we were clearly using them to entice the male faculty.  We lost a dean and a gym teacher for "inappropriate contact with female students" as well.

wow your school was full of horny perv teachers hahah.

mine had more of an issue with the students..hooking up in the science room, auditorium, math room, study hall, classrooms, graveyard, woods, meeting house and sometimes in there dorm rooms usually not there

well my second high-school had a problom like yours, not sex just sexual herrasment from one new teacher. straight out of high-school would hit on the girls and put the ones with... ample talent in the front row. He also showed up drunk on st. Patrick's day :D he got fired after one semester

There were a few teachers in the bunch that were chasing after skirts, literally.  Then the drunks in the crowd (like my US History teacher, heh).  The rest of my teachers were pretty stellar, especially when compared to those other shining examples.

The point isn't that the skittles. The point was obviously the disregard for a rule. As such, it is right to be punished, no matter how silly the offense.

The candy sales rule was most likely meant to keep vending machines out of schools, which is a good idea, being beneficial to the students' health, but students selling candy to each other shouldn't be covered under such a rule.  Even if it is, the punishment is extreme.

One day suspended, sure, but the most that deserves is a slap on the wrist.
