Title: Bush vetoes spending bill
Post by: Delfos on November 15, 2007, 02:31:38 PM
While being the nation that wastes more money in useless stuff, Bush vetoes a congress bill, and surprisingly, would follow Uruguay's idea to teach Portuguese as second language.

http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/11/13/bush.budget/index.html

I personally would rather this passed, i don't seen any reason why to fail it, just because it's a spending, there's allot more useless spending that could be cut.

Personally, I'm not sure how teaching Portuguese is a particularly intelligent use federal money. If one really must put money towards teaching language then something like Mandarin or Arabic would be far more purposeful.

Given the posts I see from a lot of these American kids the money might be better spent teaching kids english in school.

Yes. For example, our children must learn that "English" is capitalized. :P

The idea was taken from Uruguay. Uruguay is a neighbor to Brasil, and Brasil is becoming the super-power of the Americas. That's why they wanted kids to learn Portuguese, so they could compete with them. Happens anywhere, we learn the languages of the market, for centuries the 2nd language in Portugal is English and the 3rd is French, but now you can learn Spanish for example. The Spanish already have Portuguese as 2nd or 3rd language because of the proximity and market factor. There's 3 language in America, excluding French in Canada, it's English, Spanish and Portuguese. Uruguay needs more Portuguese than English, so it's perfect. That's why they wanted Portuguese in USA, so Americans wouldn't be as ignorant and could compete directly with any company in Brasil.

If you want to adjust children to where the market needs it, teach them Mandarin or Arabic. The Middle East and China are two places where America's influence is growing the greatest.

Right...specially after the discovery of petrol banks in Brasil, keep going around the globe for your market, we love it.

Well its simply the fact that a majority of American corporations are producing goods in China, and the presence in Iran and the fact that a large amount of money is sent to Israel every year, and Iran is pushing Bush's buttons, and Pakistan could become a fuck-fest soon.

Yes. Portuguese is the right way to.  :P

But I'm not saying that he should have vetoed the bill, but Portuguese is not where we should be spending our money.

Teaching Portuguese would be an utterly stupid spending idea. Portuguese isn't spoken by nearly as many people as Chinese, Spanish, or even German. I would prefer to see spending cut, not wasted on teaching a language no one here speaks.

But, on a side note, the House OKed a bill demanding that troops be withdrawn completely from Iraq by December 2008. I see no reason why Bush wouldn't veto it, though. And overriding a veto is easier said than done. Politicians seem to have a habit of suddenly switching sides or deciding to abstain a few months after their first decision.

Portuguese must have twice as more users than German language.
The point is the market with Brasil, not the amount of people who speak it. I do understand where the companies are, but that's probably what the congress is trying to prove. You have a great partner in South America specially with huge petrol banks that isn't allied with Venezuela in the point of not liking USA, actually willing to be partner with USA like the last visit of Lula to USA or Bush to Brasil prooved, and you're probably wasting more on the other side of the world. Well, thanks for the oil anyway, we will sure try to run over US Oil.

Sad issue, when we thought there wasn't more oil banks in the world we discover such quantity. The only thing I like about it is the fact allot of Portuguese companies are exploring it. It's when we stop basing our economies on oil that we realise the universe out there.

i got an idea screw using foreign oil and take brazils lead and convert over to ethanol. its cheaper, less polluting ,would help the american farmer out  ,and in result the economy would improve because you could take trips and afford it and people would start to spend more and  from what i heard it is around $100-$300 to convert over ,and for the power junkies more get up. as far as diesels it would be even easier  just change some tubbing and add a filter and you are good to go. i see very few down sides on this

Portuguese? lol...

Brazil doesn't even do a lot of trade with US. Chinese on the other should learn some Portuguese, seeing how they are.

Besides, US is already set with enough oil to last awhile in a neighbor that doesn't need it's citizens to learn a new language. Stick with English. Those that need to learn it are the elites of America, who don't go to public schools in the first place.

Problem with ethanol is, to supply the American people with enough of it, you need a shit load of corn.

:trout: Brasil is the biggest producer in the world of Ethanol, if I'm not mistaken...maybe you didn't understand what i said.

Ethanol is perhaps one of the most foolish alternative fuels, at least so far as I'm concerned.

I concur with Pragmia.

Ethanol takes more fossil fuels to make than it replaces most of the time, but don't say that around Al Gore or in North Dakota; that be heresy.

 ^ :D

The thing with ethanol is, with a country as big as America, you can't possibly make enough ethanol to supply it's entire economy. More efficient to just eat the corn and walk.

Unless you have one of the biggest extensions of agriculture land. I don't like Ethanol, but it seemed pretty important last time Bush was in Brasil.

Currently hydrogen is the same way, isn't it?

For once, I think he made a correct desicion, I wouldn't pass a bill with a specific foreign language programme added either. I would have passed a bill that offered more funds to education, public health and social services in general. But not if others had pinned a bunch of waste-of-money bills to it.

you never said a thing about ethanol before that you rambled on about petrol which is just standard gas
next this plant called switchgrass produces 2.5 time as much per acre and 166.5% of sugar cane is showin promise and is extremely low work and will grow nearly anywhere the only reanson i think this is a decent option is it could remove or at lest minumize the need of foreign oil and make us a little more energy independent

Pffft... Nothing is less trustworthy than a set of numbers. They're almost as bad as facts.
