Title: Chess Tourney

Hey, I was wondering how many people likes the idea of an inter-NS chess tourney or just one amongst ourselves? You know, to foster good relations, have a bit of fun, and all that good stuff...

I think it's a fabulous idea, personally!  If enough people here are interested, we could start feeling out some of our allies to see if they'd like to participate.  Potentially, we could have our Ambassadors post invitations in our Embassies in other regions letting them know it's an open tourney.  I'd love to put something like this together, perhaps in The Zocalo.

Oh, I definitely think so!  Hmm... do you think a small entrance fee -and- a prize?  Or is that too much?

Would this be done by posting moves (Q4 > K2) or would you use a 3rd party program like Yahoo Chess?

That sounds like exactly enough!  Mayhap we could waive or lower the entrance fee for "foreigners" to encourage inter-regional participation?

I was thinking with a 3rd party program. 3 come to mind, though I know there's gotta be more.

Yahoo Chess: Only need a free account to play, no downloads except java which most people should already have.
Arcadia's Syn-Chess: Arcadia is a game which you have to download (for free) which contains a variety of games called Toys, one of which being chess. It lets multiple tables be set up so multiple games can be played at once without a bunch of screens floating around.
Ijji's chess proggy: ijji.com has some sort of chess game, but I've never played it so idk how it works.


Problem with the Tai prize is that if an international tourney is done, not just within Taijitu, not everyone is going to be registered here.

If you're not active here, a Tai prize is useless. So the Tai prize is really only good for Taijitu members.

I think that's a fabulous idea.  Osafune, I'm not sure exactly how this is all going to play out, but we'll find some way that we can make it work, I'm sure.  Just be patient for a bit and we'll give you a yell when there's enough time to really sit down and plan things out.   :clap:

We played around with the logistics on this one for quite a while, but couldn't come up with anything that we thought would actually work.

Move-by-move games on the forum would be veeeeery time-consuming, potentially confusing, and rather boring (to be frank - without images of a board it's no fun at all to watch what's going on).  If we used a real-time chess game from another site and posted scores here, it would be difficult to coordinate players from different countries and with different lifestyles and corresponding schedules; there are a lot of active members who may talk frequently via the forum, but who are literally never online at the same time.

A couple other concerns were raised, but I don't remember them at the moment.  Input would be appreciated; this would still be a great event if we can find a way to do it well!

That makes sense but I personally didn't have too much trouble when I did this in another game. I had guys from just about everywhere play in it (US, UK, Netherlands, Egypt, and the Philippines), and had no serious problems.

Off-site with Yahoo games. I just waited until I found 2 competitors online on msn, aim, or yim, told them what game to join on Y! games, and they came.

There's something else I had been thinking about recently that had reminded me of this chess tourney. What I've been calling it is the "NS Olympics (brought to you by Taijitu)." It's a series of competitions like best short story, best graphic, etc, etc, etc. There would be judges that decided the winner.

This is just something I thought of from a combination of that Nanowrimo thing someone posted about somewhere on our forum and something we're doing in a Gamespot union. Uh... Anyway, this would be very much feasible, wouldn't you think? Hell, maybe I just got lucky before...

BUT as for the chess tourney, I think I may have an idea but I have no time to explain it right now (class begins in like 5 secs).

Ummm... Does anybody know how to use the table tags on here? That's basically my idea; to create an 8x8 table and insert pics of the pieces within the cells. When someone announces their move (on the forum), a mod or whoever made the topic moves the image to the cell they requested. Then the next person will post their move.

Sounds like a good idea, yet it seems high maintenance. Plus, and I'm not quite sure about this, but all the pictures would probably make loading the page rather slow, especially when the forum is on one of those spikes when it is just laggy. Ask one of the Limi or Elu (if you can find him). They definetaly know more about this stuff than I do.

If you get images that have smaller file sizes, it shouldn't be that much of a problem. Just look at how many images is on any typical page of our forum :P

The coloured cells are images in themselves, you'd have to make two separate ones for every piece, one for when on a black cell, the other for when on a white. This is where it starts to get complicated for whoever is modding this... :shrug:

It's actually rather easy to update the board when you've got that list like what's posted on the previous page. Plus, all of the code for the starting board is right there, you just have to copy and paste everything.

I think we could have a chess tourney this way  ;D

Shit... I'll fix the code on the previous page, but it takes for ever to actually set the board up so I'm going to leave it be for right now :P

This is only supposed to be a test game anyway to see how well this process would work.

I think a chess tourney is a great idea.  It's just some sort of program rather than just posting moves might be good, even if it is turn based.  That way we wouldn't be cluttering the board with excessive posts.
