Title: Games with the best re-play value
Post by: Allama on September 26, 2007, 11:58:55 AM
You know the games I'm talking about; the ones you played and beat for the first time years ago but still manage to entertain the hell out of you when going through them again.

Here are a couple of mine:

Super Metroid

Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Illusion of Gaia

STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl
Half-Life 2
Morrowind
Oblivion

Deus Ex: Invisible War
Tetris
Bubble Bobble
Mario
Civ

are a few good replay games that come to mind

Civ
Age of Empires
Old platformers like Mario and Sonic
A Link to the Past
Goldeneye 64.  It's been around for ten years, and it's still a favorite to play with friends.  I wonder if Halo's going to be around after ten years?

Disgaea 1 and 2 have pretty high replay value for strategy RPGs.  They're more non-linear and feature a lot of possibilities for gameplay, while many similar titles are more "play through it once" sorts of games.  They also don't have deadly serious storylines, which is a nice change from the typical "WE HAVE TO SAVE THE WORLD BLAH BLAH BLAH" deal you usually see.

Super Mario RPG, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, and Smash TV.

One game is worthy of this title to me:

Super Mario World.  And while Super Mario Bros 3 may be considered "better" no game has come closer to perfection then SMW.

Its also the game I have completed the most times.

somehow i can't replay (as i can't reread). In Morrowind case, since my 2nd character i started cheating, didn't want to 'train' all the way again, and never done any quest, just exploiting modifications. Same goes to Oblivion, last time i didn't go for main quest, didn't want to ruin the wilderness with stupid gates and beasts.

Grand Theft Auto 3 <- Is my winner of replays.

i think vice city is the best so far it just never gets old
Title: Re: Games with the best re-play value

I like San Andreas over Vice City, just because the map is so much bigger and more varied. Plus the 2 player spots are great fun  :D Me and my friend used to spend hours playing 2 player mode, my friend would usually drive the bike and I'd sit on the back and be the gunner, made police chases a lot more interesting since I could shoot out their tires, gas tanks and drivers pretty well. You could also auto target cars and helicopters which made things interesting. Or the other thing that was fun was having duels between us :D 2 player mode quickly replaced single player turns as the preferred play style.

As for cheating in Morrowind, that is probably one of the most fun games to cheat in. Especially if you used the editing tools to make insanely enchanted items. I loved giving myself 250 jump, 10000 archery and tonnes of Mana and just going around wiping out ton after town like some sort of unstoppable ninja.

Fallout was another game that was great for replay, and also a lot of fun to cheat in once you beat it.

Baldur's Gate 2 was most excellent for third- or fourth-run cheating.  I adored giving myself thousands upon thousands of experience points and then use legit equipment to wipe the hell out of my enemies.  ;D

I still have Super Mario RPG.  I haven't played it in years.  My fave has to be Super Mario Kart 'cause hubby and I used to play it against each other.  Much fun competition!
I am the champ!
I'll have to hook the game system up, again...   ;D

Oh, oh, I forgot Yoshi's Story!  That game was so unbearably cute I couldn't help but play it over and over, especially given that there are about a million level combinations you can use to complete the game.

and F-Zero, that was a sweet game. Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore and Street Fighter II should also be on this list along with Mario Paint :D

SNES had so many good titles.

I looked and I still have Super Mario World!  I thought it was Yoshi's Island when I glanced at the game...

I will *really* have to set up the system, again!

I also love the Sim City games.

If you like simcity you should check this game out: Spore (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8dvMDFOFnA)

It's by the maker of simcity and the sims although it goes far beyond just cities and people =]

Looks a lot like Sim Earth. I love playing that game over and over, too!

I've got Spore bookmarked, thanks!

Hm, there are many good games which I liked to play gain, but only after some time. If I play trough a game, I always want to discover all what is possible to find - so, I rarely encounter somethig new :( . Especially old SNES games like Final Fantasy VI, the Dragon Quest series and Bahamut Lagoon are amazing enough to replay them.

On PSX, I really enjoyed Grandia I; Front Mission 3 is also nice, but I haven't played it trough yet ;) .

On PC, the only game I played and where I can say it is worth at least one replay, is Baldurs Gate II (never played part I, sadly). There are some other very excellent games like Half Life 1&2, or Deus Ex, but those don't offer much new you can discover in a "second run"...

With Deus Ex II there's 4 different endings you can get so that offers some replay. You can also do all the missions to their different outcomes. I like how doing that shows just how linear the game really is because no matter what you do you get to the same places to talk to the same people and the only point which makes a difference is what groups you kill in the final island. Still a fun game though so I keep replaying it, same reason I keep replaying max payne, bullet time is fun =]

Max Payne is also the only FPS I've beaten without being hit once, it took A LOT of saving and reloading to do it, but still I got it done.

Baldur's Gate II is excellent the second time around.

And Diablo would have replay value it it had much play value in the first place.

Anything by Rare before Nintendo sold them to the devil.

I was replaying Metal Gear Solid 1 and realized how sad I had become.  As I said to myself, "This game wasn't this hard when I was 8 (the first time I played it)".

Super Smash Bros 1 and 2 can be played almost forever, and I keep going back to Zone of the Enders 1 and 2 as well.

Spore would probably blow my fusebox (after crashing my PC).

I never did get in to Super Metroid much, but you nailed two of my choices. I think I'd have to throw in Chrono Trigger.

Third World War for the Sega Genesis

FUCK YES!

RPG wise, I normally don't replay, just like I normally don't re-read a book. The only exception to this has been FFX, which I played through 3 times.

Guitar Hero 3 makes my list for most recent game that I've played that I know I'll keep going back to.

List of older games....

Jaws (NES)
Godzilla: Monster of Monsters (NES)
Any SMB game, except for Mario64, which I never really got into.
Contra (NES)
Galaga (NES)
Pac Man (NES)

Street Fighter II (SNES)
Mortal Kombat Trilogy (PSX)
PTO I. II. IV (SNES, SNES, PS2)
Ghengis Khan II (Genesis)
Star Control II (PC)
SuperPower and SP2 (PC)
Civ (PC)

Title: Re: Games with the best re-play value

Kingdom Hearts does indeed suck. I generally find Disney hypocritical i.e., they "speak for children" yet most of their toys are made in foreign sweatshops, and I also hate how they once went out of their way to deny they had an officially sanctioned "Gay Day" because they don't want to upset the big bucks coming in from the fundamentalist Christians.

Sorry about that tangent, you're lucky I didn't go on about the endless things Disney has done because they can do whatever they damn well please.

But Tetris ftw.

Tetris was a lot harder to play (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZrs8ZCO8xM&feature=related) before the invention of video games.

Speaking as Bara's archbishop, I have to say that Kingdom Hearts is awesome. There is no sense in condemning the entire game just because you don't like Disney.

But, yeah, Tetris does suck.

GTA isn't half bad, but Halo is mediocre.

So is the Call of Duty franchise. Medal of Honor is far superior, in my opinion. And moving to modern warfare? WTF? In my opinion, modern warfare isn't good video game material in general because real modern warfare is more calculations and missiles than shooting-it-out.

modern warfare you have spec ops games, like CSS, and you have battlefield games like...Battlefield 2. Modern Warfare is fun at some point, depending in what kind of modern warfare the game is spotting.

However, freedom fighters is a good game.

blasting cops? Well cops are an annoying creature in GTA, but not exactly where the fun is. Allot of players make car collections in GTA, street racing and most and best of all, pedestrian squashing. Ah, i like to drive people with my taxi car around the city, just like 'walking in the park'.

You know, i rember when i played GTA once. it was funny what me and my friends did. Wehjacked all these cars, and formed a huge barcide, and when we got our wanted meter really high, we would run back to the barrcide, and just shoot everything that came by us. it was super fun!

Yeah I remember I got GTA: Vice City when I was 13 and then my mother watched a phoney news report talking about the "hot coffee mod" if any of you know about it.

She made me sell it back, what bullshit... Hot coffee mod was on only a few game systems and they claimed Rockstar had made it...

get it back, it's really worth the effort, specially when you go on Mods. Anyway, the bad thing are the limited universe, i think San Andreas is more explored, i would love to ride a motorcycle in Vice-City, still, nothing yet beats GTA3 in my ranking of most re-play value and re-plays.
