I love this movie, although the book was a LOT better (as is usually the case)

I also like how every time you watch it you noticed new things be they hidden in the background or just other little things..

A few years back I used to watch this movie almost on a daily basis, I've had VHS copies of movies from the 80's last longer then my VHS copy of F&L

It was alright, but it was too much in a drug-laced stupor most of the time to make any sense at all.

Oh i remember this one, it was weird, very good but weird. David Lynch would do a better job without drugs. I think the merit in this movie is the actor, Johnny is great and he's superb in this kind of roles.

David Lynch? I believe this was directed by Terry Gilliam. Haven't seen the movie, but I love Gilliam's writing/directing work.

It was started by Alex Cox, he got fired and then they had Gilliam come in.  The book was all about Hunter S. Thompson's drug trip in Las Vegas.  So to take out any of the drug references or not to make Hunter stoned out of his head the whole time would pretty much make for a worthless movie.

No i just compared David Lynch would do a pretty similar or better movie without inducing drugs into the movie, not about the story itself, Johnny really does a great work so I would just say the movie is great because of him, otherwise i don't see much of an interest.

Ah, I thought you were arguing that Lynch should stop taking drugs so that he can make better movies, which my implication  would include this one. My apologies.

If anything he should take more powerful drugs in larger quantities to improve his films.

This post was about what people thought of the movie.  Before you say anything about the drug references and Lynch wouldn't use them, Frank from "Blue Velvet" was a carrying a bottle of nitrous oxide.  If Lynch had directed "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas", he would have kept the drug referneces in.  The movie is great not because of the acting but because it gets right in your face about drug use.  It gives the feeling that you are right there and really did a good job converting the book to a movie.
