Top 10 Writers

Give us a list of your Top 10 writers, sure can be modified, this is will be great for those who don't know who to read...no need to rank them from 1 to 10, just make a list of your 10 writers, the only thing i ask, don't write down people you haven't read of, "I heard about it" or "I've seen the movie" or "They told me about in School" doesn't count.
If you are interested to note down a person you haven't yet read you can make the suggestion off the list.
I note the emphasis of 'writers', not theoretic exposition, i mean really writing as art. So i would exclude Freud, but sure if you think he's a fantastic writer, why not. Try to vary on the literature gender, maybe?

Umberto Eco
Fernando Pessoa (Pessoa)
Miguel de Cervantes (Cervantes)
Miguel Torga (Torga)
Cesário Verde
Jorge Amado
Edgar Allan Poe
JRR Tolkien
Eça de Queirós (Eça)
Manuel Maria de Barbosa l´Hedois Du Bocage (Bocage)

There's a couple American writers i would like to read, but i can't remember the names, i bet Khab knows. Would also like to read Mia Couto among others. Out of the list (had to delete) was Herman Hesse, who i only read in Portuguese and they weren't particularly good, only the story was. Writing is what's important here.

Let's see
Joe Haldeman, Robert A Heinlein, James Clavell, Arthur C Clarke, I'll add more as I think of them.
