I started this topic, essentially, to mourn/whine about one show in particular:
Drive.
Fox, you sons of bitches, that was BY FAR the best show you've put on in years. Rave reviews. What do you do, then? Cancel it after 3 episodes. Less than 4 hours worth of showtime and you go and take it off the air like so much trash, and for what? Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader? All of your executives should be fired, and I mean that with all seriousness.
Go ahead and discuss any other shows that you think should have stayed on the air that, unfortunately, did not. Like Firefly.

Three other great shows that Fox canned way to early...Titus, Greg the Bunny, and Futurama. All three were brilliant, and Fox canned all three way to early.
The one show cancellation that really gets to me (an other Fox decision) was the X-Files. Best non-comedic show ever, IMO. Still, they had a good run.
I can't really blame Fox for cancelling it though, as they had already gotten all they could out of the Doggett (Robert Patrick) and Reyes (Annabeth Gish) characters. To continue the show they would have had to bring Mulder back full time, but David Duchovny didn't want to do it anymore, so there was really no choice. Still, I would to have at least liked to have seen the alien mythos resolved at the end of season 9 (the last season), but we got a cliffhanger instead! A cliffhanger for the series finale! WTF?
At least they're making up for it by putting together a new X-Files movie (with the original cast! w00t!) that should resolve the alien mythos. Can't wait to see Mulder kicking alien ass once again ;D

Deadwood

Was a great series - all 3 seasons of it... I read that they let all the actors out of their contracts and the set has been torn down, so probably no movie, like they talked about. :(

Like Firefly.
Here I thought I was the only one that liked that show. Loved Firefly also. It seem all the good one get canceled and they just leave junk or reality on anymore.

Invader Zim. How I miss that show so deeply.
-
"Firefly" and "Dead like me"
-
Futurama and Family Guy, hopefully they're coming back though.

Family Guy is back and Futurama is coming back.
I am not a huge fan of family guy, but Futurama rocks my socks.
-
Yeah, Futurama was awesome. Any cartoon that can make a funny joke about quantum physics has to be doing something right =]
As for Family Guy it's been canceled what, 3 time now? and they keep bringing it back and Family Guy keeps pushing the envelope and getting canceled...

Its been awhile from when Family Guy "pushed the envelope" sadly, I think it has more to due with ratings.

Firefly is so great.
you know a show got cancelled too early when they make a successful movie after the show has been cancelled for some itme and wins awards after it cancelled.
I also bought the Invader Zim box set just because I love that show that much
-
Rocko's Modern Life! That show was awesome as a kid
-
Is Futurama coming back? Last I heard, they were trying to make it a movie.

Maybe I missed something, but Drive? Really? Now, it didn't seem as bad as some of the other trash fox puts out on a daily basis, but it was no high art. And most of the reviews I read were middling, at best. But hey, maybe I did miss something. It was nice seeing Nathan Fillion in something else, though.
Alright, my rants: Veronica Mars and Alias. Firstly, Mars. Damn you, Dawn Ostroff (CW leading exec), damn you to the fiery pits in the ninth circle of hell! You cancel the best written show on television (sorry, Lost) for WHAT??? THE F*****G PUSSYCAT DOLLS????? *twitch twitch*.
When a teenage male boycotts a show with scantily clad women gyrating to pop music, the show it replaced had to have been DAMN GOOD. I abjectly refuse to watch a single minute of that show. But hey, they obviously replaced Mars because they had much better programming coming, right? Like...Gossip Girl...and ANOTHER season of One Tree Hill. Why, why WHY?
But at least Kristen Bell is on my new favorite show (which ascended from third to first due to Lost not coming until January and the cancellation of Mars), Heroes. But Mars had so much more left in it. Hell, we didn't even get closure; the finale was a bleepin' cliffhanger, because the cast and crew didn't know this would be the final season. Now that's just cruel.
And Alias. I'm not so mad at the show's cancellation (it was reaching the end of it's rope), I just think it deserved one more season to help wrap up the show's numerous loose ends.
And on the subject of cancelled Fox shows, anyone remember Wonderfalls? A charming show cut down too soon. But hey, its creator is back with Pushing Daisies (which looks great). He also created Dead Like Me...I though I was the only one that watched that show. The scene before the first commercial of the series is the funniest I've ever seen on television, bar none.
And yes, Alana, FOX (and the CW) are SOBs. That's why Reaper (the only decent non-reality show on the CW) is probably not going to last the year. I won't get too attached.
Great thread, BTW. Nicely done, Alana (again).

Might want to edit your post trey, its hard on the eyes.
Also, as I stated in its own thread, Freaks and Geeks pretty much owns.
-
Ah, Futurama...
-
What I think goes on with Family Guy is FOX doesn't want what happened with them with Futurama. As long as Seth McFarlane sticks to his guns, its in FOX's best interest to keep renewing the show.
-
Futurama and Invader Zim definitely make my list, though Family Guy should probably have stayed off the air when it was canceled. Don't get me wrong; I liked the show for the first couple seasons. It simply stopped being funny after a while as they kept trying to top themselves as far as pushing the envelope or being random went.
Great thread, BTW. Nicely done, Alana (again).
Why, thank you, darlin'. :)
-
Is Futurama coming back? Last I heard, they were trying to make it a movie.
As far as I understand it, they're going to release a straight-to-DVD movie in November, followed by another three movies, which will eventually be broken down and aired as separate episodes.

Anytime. By the way...am I the only person that couldn't stand Invader Zim?

I think it is over rated. I didn't hate it, I just don't get it.

It started off as a great show, but it just got weirder as time went on.

Invader Zim is one long LSD trip.
And the best show ever cancelled was Seinfeld, even though Jerry ended it himself.

Exactly. It would be great while you were high.

Well yeah, Seinfeld is also the greatest show ever made ;D
I wouldn't consider it cancelled though. As you said, Jerry ended it himself. NBC wanted to keep it going.

Personally I think Invader Zim got better as it went because it started to get more into outer space. I loved how the aliens in that show looked so crazy...

Also, I think it's worth noting that Star Trek: Enterprise got cancelled just as it was getting good.

Also, I think it's worth noting that Star Trek: Enterprise got cancelled just as it was getting good.
Going back to the beginning was all well and good in concept, but it was too restricted in what species it could use and in the path the storyline could evolve in. They would have been better off to go with a story line which involves the borg reaction after the end of voyager or one of the first time ships and it's role in the temporal cold war.

The Temporal Cold War is a good idea, as the idea could have easily sustained its own series.
My biggest gripe about Enterprise, however, was the lost opportunity to do something really unique in the Star Trek universe, as the concept was golden.
Let me explain....
In the ST timeline Enterprise takes place, for the most part, prior to the Earth/Romulan war. Now if we look back as the original show, Spock says the Earth/Romulan war was fought with very primitive spacecraft, powered by nuclear reactors, without large video screens to see what's in front of them, and where ship-to-ship communication was almost impossible. Essentially the ships described were like giant space-going submarines.
If they had used these guidelines when writing Enterprise it would have been so much better. The set should have looked less like the traditional Star Fleet ship, and more like the bridge of the Red October. They should have really driven home the point of how primitive the first Star Fleet vessels were.
Instead they used a set that looked more advanced then the set that was suppose to represent a hundred years worth of technological advancement. They had all the comforts of a conventional ST show; a large video screen, easy ship-to-ship communication, transporters, phasers, etc....
It was sometimes hard to believe that this was suppose to pre-date the Kirk days, especially when a description of Enterprise's own timeframe in the Kirk show described very primitive ships.
So, IMO, Enterprise was a lost opportunity to both respect previously established cannon AND do something no other ST show had done before.
-
Yeah, that would have been cool, but unfortunately the original ST conflicts with the First Contact movie upon which the series was based as that uses an anti-matter reactor for humanities first warp vessel. Although I know what you mean about the ST:E technology being more advanced, look at the tri-corders as a perfect example
(http://www.technovelgy.com/graphics/content05/tricorder-detail.jpg)
I can't find a good image of Enterprise's tri-corders but they're small hand held devices. I suppose part of it is creating technology that people would feel is future-tech today, which is hard to do while making the shows technology less advances then a show from 40ish years ago. Given the look of the Original ST I can only conclude that people in Kirk's time were either having a "style renascence" or doing way too much acid :P
The other cool possibility for Enterprise would have been if humanity wasn't evolved into the "federation" mindset, when I first heard it was to be set in a time before the prime directive I hoped it might be about humans being a little more evil and the repercussions thereof.
It's too bad Paramount has said it's not going to do anything more with the star trek series, I think it still has a lot of room to grow.
I really like the episode where Archer is trapped in the suliban prison camp and helps them escape, not because of the episode itself, but because it has Al from Quantum Leap in it.

Wild West Tech was the last good real show on the History Channel (The Universe rocked, but it was a mini-series). Now the History Channel is the Hitler-y and Nostradamus channel. See the newest documentary about "The Lost Book of Nostradamus"? God, shut the hell up already. The world's not gonna end in 2012, deal with it.

Yeah, global warming will finish it off long before then ;D

The Mayans would beg to differ ;D
I'm not saying there's any weight to Nostradamus' predictions, I just think its weird that in two different parts of the world two different doomsday predictions were made revolving around the same year.
-
Don't confuse the end of a civilization for the end of the world.
-
It's a widespread misconception that the Mayan calendar ends in 2012. Well, it does...but it means the end of this era and the beginning of another, not the end of the world. I guess the Mayans neglected to make a new calendar, what with the Spanish and Portuguese invading and pretty much raping them.
-
Well that would be awesome, specially the part of the Portuguese invading and raping Mayans, but well, i blame the Spanish Pope and Queen for screwing our colonization.
-
Well Delfos, its a couple of hundred years too late to cry about it now.

Rule Britannia, Britannia rules the waves!

I am sad that there were only three seasons of the original ST. I loved that show. Acting could have been better, but the plot and what I took from each episode were great.
I am also sad that Gilmore Girls was canceled.
