Title: Dark underground prisons & Flying reptiles with breath weapons
Post by: Solnath on May 05, 2007, 08:52:33 PM
An issue that stirred up on IRC, would anyone else than Amy and possibly Oz like to play D&D online?

Most likely 3.5E and all positions are still open for democratic purposes. Please pick the appropriate answers, "Cookies?" goes with every other answer. Combining "No" with a "Yes" will most likely confuzzle people, so please refrain from doing so.

Ask questions and all shall be revealed except bank PINs or whether or not it's butter.

The only MMOs that I will consider playing are WAR and AoC. DDO is for D&D nerds.

DDO?

This is about playing D&D over the internet, via forum and IM.

That's almost as nerdy as RPing as if acting.

And that's almost English. :-P

Anyways, takasia, you only voted Cookies?, so do you want to play or not?

I would love to, I have played some on P&P but not enough to know the rules for character creation.
Unfortunately this might be problematic due to not everyone having access to every IM service  and some only get one to work, I am one and I know PUR is another, on top of that, we can't get the same one to work...

EDIT: If it does work out I'll want an original mêlé character

yea i could totaly go for a good rogue character. i love doing rogues who have cool tools and weapons, such as an umbrella shield/spear/tool case. mmhmmmmm.
Title: Re: Dark underground prisons & Flying reptiles with breath weapons

Well, if someone is unfamiliar with the rules, checking out System Reference Documents (http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/System_Reference_Document) wouldn't hurt. Of course, one shouldn't actually complete the character, because we're not yet certain on what level we're starting on and, depending on who's being the DM, what the setting is.

*looks up* Okay, so that's at least five we have. It'd be great if people could post their character ideas so a clearer image can be formed of the party structure. If you're unsure on how to make a character, either use the SRD link in this post or ask here.

PUR, what are the stats of an umbrella shield/spear/tool case and does it resemble what Setsuka has in Soul Calibur III?

And as a general comment preferably no extreme power-building, Pun-Puns and the like tend disrupt game balance.

Yours truly,
Whee!!!!

EDIT: Damn, forgot psionics completely. Ehh... they're listed as spellcasters. Pick that if you want to play a psionic class.

<.<
>.>
>.<

EDIT 2: The IM problem can be solved in many ways. First, there are a lot of IM programs out there. I mean a lot. Some of them are bound to work in one way or another. Second, there's always IRC, which I believe is accessable to everyone.

D&D is damn powergaming...but that mainly depends on the players. I would try it at least.
Hope there are good rules for demon conjurers/summoners/whyever they´re named....
Title: Re: Dark underground prisons & Flying reptiles with breath weapons
Post by: tak on May 06, 2007, 02:37:37 PM
I have not played that before, but would love to try
Is it difficult to start with?
Title: Re: Dark underground prisons & Flying reptiles with breath weapons
Post by: Solnath on May 06, 2007, 03:10:40 PM
Well, it can be really confusing if you just jump in, so I highly recommend you read the rules (http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/SRD:System_Reference_Document) to give you some insight on how things work. All in all, it is quite friendly toward new players, but experience affects the swiftness of the gameplay.

And yes, I know there's quite a lot to read there. :-P
Title: Re: Dark underground prisons & Flying reptiles with breath weapons
Post by: tak on May 06, 2007, 03:33:48 PM
uh... that's a lot to read....  :o
perhaps I'll skip this one for now, and just get the fun by watching...  :-\
Title: Re: Dark underground prisons & Flying reptiles with breath weapons
Post by: Solnath on May 06, 2007, 03:47:42 PM
Alright then, watching usually helps learn how things work and if there's something obscure, there's nothing wrong in asking.

Also, a question to the players, does anyone object to starting at level 2?
Title: Re: Dark underground prisons & Flying reptiles with breath weapons
Post by: Larry on May 06, 2007, 04:53:35 PM
Hmmm, perhaps I should just watch for now as well. I have little experience in these matters, due mainly to a lack of D&D nerds fans in my vicinity.

However, to intimidate players, it'd be great if you could answer these questions. (http://www.geocities.com/buddhabear_sj/gaming/tables.html#12q)

So whats the ETA on that cookie?
Title: Re: Dark underground prisons & Flying reptiles with breath weapons

ETA? No one said it would result in receiving a cookie, it was just an option to vote for.

Oh-kay, seeing as I'm most likely DMing, second level it is, happily meaning that level adjustment +1 races are allowed.

Thanks, PUR, at least someone is showing decent activity.  :-P

I'm willing to play :).

I don't have IRC on my backup computer though (my main is down for the count), might be a problem.  Which IRC do we use, and what would be the IP, server, etc?
Title: Re: Dark underground prisons & Flying reptiles with breath weapons
Post by: Solnath on May 07, 2007, 02:26:40 AM
Most likely espernet, which can be accessed through Taijitu IRC. (http://www.taijitu.org/pjirc/) It'd be great if you could produce a character concept in the near future.

On a more general scale, if you want to make a really extravagant character build, tell me what books you've used to get it. Also, if you want to write up the character sheet already, here's a check-list:

1) 72 attribute points, 1-to-1 buy (Oh yes... >:D)
2) Level 2, so +1 LA allowed
3) Preferably, no Chaotic Evils without a really good reason, they're not team-players
4) No Ardents or other insta-powerbuilds
5) Some, but not all monstrous PC races or classes
6) Basically, if it's in the Dungeon Master's Guide (NPC classes, mhmm), Player's Handbooks I and II, Complete Warrior, Complete Adventurer, Complete Divine, Complete Arcane, Book of Exalted Deeds or Expanded Psionics Handbook, it's most likely ok. If it's not, it's possible it's fine and dandy.

Hopefully, I forgot nothing of the list. If someone wants to challenge any of the above, feel free to. They're just the initial starting points.

Also, do the spell-casters wish to use the mana point system from Unearthed Arcana?

Questions welcome.

Judging by your answers, she seems to be a Chaotic Good Bard, am I correct?

Also, to add to the list, in case people want to buy items already (<.<, >.>), 999 gp are at your disposal. Just to tease you with those 1000 gp magic items.

That's one against, out of one verified spell-caster. I also thought of why you might be joining up with the others. *evil laughter*

And yet another addition to the list: characters must take care of their basic needs (eating, drinking and toilet activities), either generically or non-generically. Malnourishment and dehydration rules apply.

More will follow, especially after the others post their characters as well.

DM: "Once, when you were ten, you heard a rumour of a-"
PUR: "OH YEAH, WE'RE SO GOING THERE!"
Everyone else: "..."

Well, the basic idea is that you were travelling from the city of Zamand north to seek the great musician Iso Saphanés who moved there ten years to live a solitary life dedicated to composing his Ninth Symphony. While you were on your way, your wagon's left rear wheel collapsed because of some unknown reason, dreadfully convenient seeing as this forces you to seek repairs from a nearby town of Vobo where, by sheer coincidence that seems awfully akin to a plot device, you meet the rest of the gang, some of whom you might already know. Might as in if I knew what their characters are like... :-P

Sound good?

I have only had time to read 1.5 pages from the beginning and 1.5 pages from the end.  :o

I guess as a character I'd play human necropolitan archivist!

Okay, then it'd be great if you could answer these questions (http://www.geocities.com/buddhabear_sj/gaming/tables.html#12q) and tell me why exactly is a necropolitan archivist in a little village in the rural countryside. :-P

i once saw a psychotic french chef try to jump a fence before being carted off to the loony bin in a plain white van when i was in a youth hostel in france

we think he also tried to kill himself, but we're not sure

hows tht for a character?

I don't think anyone who can be defined "psychotic" is really suitable as a character in a game that requires teamwork to any extent... That kind of people tend to have very "original" ideas of their own as to how things work.

This dice roller (http://invisiblecastle.com/rolldice.py) will be used so that everyone can roll most of their checks on their own.

I must ask a question before I commit to anything: when is it likely we would "meet" on RC?  Scheduling conflicts may ensue.

Assuming that can be worked out, I would love to join the campaign!  I just had my weekly D&D session with my "real life" friends last night, so I may just borrow aspects of my current character (since she's so much fun to play).

I'm sure I will.

Saaay... anyone planning on playing a Drow Chaotic Good Ranger that wields two scimitars?

Anyone who does so will soon face their very timely death.

I could come up with a character. So if anyone has an idea or thinks that the group seriously needs something special, just post suggestions here. Otherwise, I'll probably do a psion telepath aiming for the Anarchic Initiate prestige class. We'll see how it all turns out...

Okay, so as it stands, we have PUR, RK (not KR) and Jolkuna with somewhat ready characters. I haven't seen character sheets or anything, but they do have concepts fairly finished. We could start a game with these three, but I'm going to hold that for a while longer to see if anyone wants to travel with two chaotics and an archivist.

And come on, SD, you'd make a great wizzard. Betcha didn't see that one coming? Hahahaa!

Haha...haa...

EDIT: Hmm, AI, eh? I'll have to revise that, but nothing against that as far as I can see.

If you want something more exotic, take snake blood.

Yes, I second Jolkuna. Those feats sound very good for a Rgr/TK/HS. Also, the character would fit in extremely well with the current party. Maybe your ranger could also be lawful neutral, with emphasis on the lawful aspect. You know, kinda like "Judge Dredd -lawful" or the like.

Well, I am going to admit right out that I was too lazy to read anything between this and the first post, but none the less I am interested. Granted, I'm not sure if it will be what I am used to, me being used to games which are generally insane (but entertaining), involving killer pies and psychotic gnomish paladins.

The government of the country you're in can be described with a few words: feudal, xenophobic, relatively stable, xenophobic, dislikes other species, xenophobic. That's why RK's catgirl/boy (I forget which gender it was, maybe he didn't pick definitely) is going to get a lot of crap down his collar if you know what I'm saying.

I want a dwarf monk! (Kind of a caricature of brother tucker in Prince of thieves but still fighting, he would be a monk of Onatar and eventually get a pair of Psi-bands in the shape of brass knuckles O:-)

He would be slightly shorter than the average dwarf but almost twice as heavy... and lawful Neutral :drunks:

It would be hilarious to play a lawful good cleric of Pelor in this campaign... maybe I'll go with that!

No, nevermind that, changed my mind.  Female Chaotic Neutral rogue.  I'll answer some of the questions you posted a link to later, maybe list some stats after I make up a charcter sheet.

Thanks for the help! I'm very new in this, so building a character is quite a burden for me. So many things to consider... If you have any other suggestions, I'd be glad to hear them.

I have a question, too. In case I dump my idea of using a Psion, should I make a straight Fighter or a Samurai?

Quote
ToB is a bit broken as a standalone.
Wow! I understand that melee characters are damn overpowered so making them not rely on full attacks makes them even more broken, right? Wow, a 20th level Crusader can do 20d6 damage with one attack as a standard action. That certainly is somewhat the same as using a Greater metamagic rod of Quicken, Time stop, 3xGate and Prismatic sphere. In short, there's just no way a Tome of Battle character could ever stand up against a full spellcaster. Even Wu Jens kick their asses. The fact that Crusaders, Warblades and Swordsages are better than Fighters does not make them broken...

Got a new idea for a character, but I think Soly gets me hosed, if I try to fill the role of a tank with a Cleric. What do you say Soly? Neutral Good Cleric with Planning and Travel domains?

Oh fine, dearest Tshern-o-boggy, but only if you can think up why he's travelling with the CGs or how is he related to Vobo. Love your sarcasm as always, by the way.

And Latagon, 3.5E is the only one allowed, too much has changed since even 3.0 for it to work properly in conjunction.

Title: Re: Dark underground prisons & Flying reptiles with breath weapons
Post by: Gulliver on May 11, 2007, 02:10:29 AM
Hm, well more considering on my part and I'm getting somewhere. I suppose he would be a wizard, who attended some school of the sort for 4 years starting at age 16 and subsequently, rather than proceeding on to greater and better things as he hoped ended up stuck in some mundane and mind numbing if stable paper pusher job for the government which he has worked at for the last 3 years. Perhaps he has now been assigned by his xenophobic employers to keep an eye in a minder sort of role to keep an eye on those odd new and clearly wicked folk, especially that cat person. And thus the horror begins...

And I'm curious as to how the mana system works. Certainly, it would be nice to have some flexibility in choosing what spells I cast rather than having to be bound by whatever I have memorized.

Correct.  In my earlier RPs I really drew from them, as in my Future RPs I draw from Halo.  I like my signature, because I made it myself.  It's the only one I've ever made, so I was proud of it.

You don't need to send me a scan or anything just add everything that's required. The revised 3.5E character sheet (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/charactersheets) is pretty complete. The SRD (http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/SRD:System_Reference_Document) will help if you don't have books.

If you wish, you can just send me the character and I can help you with the calculations. Throw me a private message and I'll have a look at the sheet and do what I can, which should be enough.

Pragmia, shouldn't your Base attack bonus be one now when you have two levels of Wizard? Also, you should have one language more. Common+racial bonus language+3 for your Int-modifier.

Caral is a traveling druid, who wanders around the world hoping to change it. Though she is a bit awkward in social situations (as she has traveled for years and is rarely accompanied by anyone apart from her loyal pet dog), she enjoys having a small number of people around because the lack of stability in her life makes the few moments spent with other people even more valuable. During her life Caral has been on many adventures and that kind of a life suits her personality very well because adventures usually involve changing the world to the better and meeting other people.

Krypto is a large crossbred riding dog with bushy, almost white hair. Caral found Krypto from a forest near to a battlefield from which Krypto had apparently left. Krypto and Caral have now traveled together for some five years and Krypto has grown very loyal and reliable and has proven his capabilities in battles as well.

Hey, it's a damn healbot! Well, she can certainly hold her own in melee, spellcasting and all that, but it all depends on how I play her. Honestly, I'm not planning on doing anything special, I'll probably concentrate on battlefield control (Entangle), healing (Lesser vigor) and buffing (this is yet to come).

I voted, by the way. Picked Cookies for reasons that are very obvious to Soly and Jolkuna, and both melee and spellcasting. Druid is a two-in-one package, so I had to take 'em both.

I know, but Tshern is good enough a player to not disrupt party balance and his animal companion's name is Krypto.

Bs, since the Shapechange/Wildshape errata, the Druid has dropped in power significantly. It can still hold his own again most classes, though the greatest classes such as the Samurai and the 3.0 Ranger defeat pretty much any Druid build instantly.

Well, now I only have a couple of problems left, name and how to actually create the character... (And I am used to rolling the main stats with a set number of dice according to race, re-rolling ones with an unmodified cap at 20 in the cases 4d6 are used)
Title: Re: Dark underground prisons & Flying reptiles with breath weapons
Post by: Solnath on May 14, 2007, 07:42:44 AM
Well, you have 72 points at your disposal, distributable freely with the minimum being 8 and maximum 18 to any stat. Racial modifiers et al. are added on later.

For example:

Str: 16
Dex: 16
Con: 16
Int: 8
Wis: 8
Cha: 8

...is perfectly acceptable, as all the stats add up to 72.
Title: Re: Dark underground prisons & Flying reptiles with breath weapons

Str: 18
Dex: 18
Con: 18
Int: 8
Wis: 8
Cha: 8

...is perfectly acceptable, as all the stats add up to 72.
That makes 72?

I'm quite sure your AC is not 28. 10 is the base, then 2 from your dexterity modifier (15-10/2, rounded downwards gives 2) and studded leather armor gives three more. That's 15 right there.

So, your ability modifiers (the number in brackets after the actual modifier) are:
STR: 16 (3)
DEX: 15 (2)
CON: 10 (0)
INT: 11 (0)
WIS: 12 (1)
CHA: 08 (-1)

Oh.  I thought you added the entire dexterity.  I'll fix it.
Same goes for saves, attack bonus and such. I can rewrite your character from the stuff you've given above, send it to you and you can edit it in, if you wish. It could make it a lot clearer...

Also given that you have a second level character, you would already have specialized in one of the Ranger combat styles, so you have to pick either archery (recommended) or two-weapon fighting route...

Each class has it's own criteria for calculating skill points.  You get a certain number per level of a class, plus your intelligence bonus.  You may add these points to any skill your class is capable of using, though cross-class skills require 2 points per rank.  Class-specific information can be found in the Player's Handbook (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=products/dndcore/175240000).

Okay, I have found my character sheet but I noticed a slight problem, I have to back-track the char from lvl. 9 to lvl.2 when it comes to HP and skills, redo the inventory and redo the stats (they were rolled with 5d6 choosing the best three dice from each roll, compiling three series of stat rolls choosing the best series) Thus giving way above average values wich has to be remade to fit.
Anyway, he is a Dwarven monk named Nurrim Noradar with the lvl1 feat "Hidden talent" as a non-class feat. He specializes on heavy blows.
At lvl 8 in the latest adventure, he punched a "large" (adolecent, no damage reductions) brass dragon in the gut for over 45hp in a single blow (full round action)
Title: Re: Dark underground prisons & Flying reptiles with breath weapons
Post by: Solnath on May 23, 2007, 11:01:38 AM
Sounds good, where's that feat from, though?
Title: Re: Dark underground prisons & Flying reptiles with breath weapons
Post by: The Empire on May 23, 2007, 02:07:03 PM
Complete psionics I think, the feat gives 2 psionic power points and allows one to develop the character with other psionic abilities without actually going a psi-class and to become psionically focused for as long as one's character retains psionic power points.
In this monk's case it also gives the ability "touch of health" which means he can heal 2HP/spent psionc power point.
Not very powerful but very colourful for a gregorian-style monk.

Naw, I know it isn't wild talent, though it might be the same book. because in the book we took it from there were two different feats with similiar effects, one "wild talent" and one "hidden talent" anyway, I would recognize the cover if I saw a pic.
Also, we fudged up a psionic "band of mighty fist" that would cost about 6k(gp) or 8k(gp) for +1 if I remember correctly, but those won't be an issue until I can afford them....

We're starting as soon as I know who seriously want to play. I have character sheets from Tshern, Pragmia, PUR and Latagon, but I haven't heard from the others. I'm inclined to do so that we start playing with this party and the others can form another one.

Unfortunately, I will be unable to participate.  I realized a little while back that I would have to leave during the session when I get work to do, and this would not help matters progress at all.

Well, my character is not quite completely complete. I still have to decide what items Paavo will be carrying on his person, though so far I've got an odd assortment of magnifying glasses and pens and inks and pocketwatches. As to starting, school is at an end for me now, and if there's anytime to start arranging and planning sessions and such now would be the time.
Title: Re: Dark underground prisons & Flying reptiles with breath weapons

Since we really can't afford any magic items, you probably won't need too much equipment. Maybe another spellbook just in case, there is only so much room in one of those.

Well, the problem is that I'll be at work while we game (if that time even ended up working out for everyone) and I can't hold off on work that comes in until I finish a session.  I can play silly forum games because they don't require my presence to continue, but I'm pretty sure this is beyond me at the moment.  If I get the job I'm applying for and end up with free internet at home, I'll review my decision.  Sorry!

Basic Role-Playing Questions
Here are the very basic "12 Questions" to help you flesh out your character into something more than "my guy".

What is your character's complete physical description? What is his/her race, age, height, weight, build? Hair color, length and type? Eye and skin tone? Unusual marks or scars? Bearing and usual demeanor? Typical garb (include multiple scenarios, if appropriate)?
She is human early 20's not particularly tall 5'6ish, buxum so a little on the heavy side (gotta love curves) brown hair down to back, blue eyes and relatively pale (but tans rather then burns its due to her not getting out much). no unusual marks or scars (sometimes missing eyebrows) usual demeanor calm and collected slightly furtive.  Usual garb is sensible clothing (sometimes trousers sometimes skirts) well made and hard wearing but not that pretty.

What is your character's complete psychological description? What are his/her ethics, religion, philosophy, and deity? What kind of personality and interests does he/she have? Is he/she intense, passionate, prone to violence, insane, crafty, etc?
She is ethical to a degree (i.e. she's not evil but then she's not good (neutral) she has a high regard for law but views it as being something that happens to other people. Thinks gods exist but are mearly incredibly powerful immortal beings she thinks of god hood as a logical career progression for powerful magic users.  She is calm with a slightly abrasive personality that is until she comes into contact with or starts casting magic when she gets a bit weird (think drunk on magic), is convinced that there is a way to combine wizardry and sorcery together to get something of disturbing power.

What are your characters hobbies? What does your character generally do in his/her leisure time? What does your character do to "unwind"?
Magic is both her trade and her hobby as such most of her time is spent on it however she also likes to read and has been known to drink excessivly.

Why does your character have the class, weapon proficiencies, skills, and languages that he/she does?
With her inherent gift for magic as well as her love of words and obsession with power she has learnt as many languages as possible as well as some skills to help her survive in the world.

What are your character's favorite things? Colors, smells, foods, drinks, sounds, animals, locations, etc.
well made goods especially those of silver and non precious metals, blue and green likes wines ciders and spirits the sound of wind in the trees good food, books, new languages new places.

What are your character's least favorite things?
Big green things with big teeth, things with magic resistance, people who destroy books, animals in general, men who think they are the gods gift.

Who are your character's current friends, lovers, allies and associates? What is the nature and intensity of these relationships?
Her mother and father a pair of mystic theurges (sorcerer/druid and wizard/cleric respectivly) who she writes home to every available oppotunity, her sister an alchemist obsessed that anything magic can do science can do better and thats about it at the moment.  While she might not show it if she comes to like people then she will do a lot to help them out.

Who and what are your character's enemies and foes? Are these based on personal experience, second-hand encounters, cultural biases, etc?
doesn't hugely dislike anyone really (well not enought for them to be called enemies)

Does your character have any pets, henchbeings or constant companions? Does your character want any?
She has no one really her last horse having to be eaten during a harse winter in the mountains, she wouldn't mind a few good friends to move about with.

What were your character's previous adventures and experiences? How have they shaped who your character is today?
She has wondered the world finding libraries tombs and temples looking for clues in her quest to understand magic and so understanding it to shape it to her will (mwahahahahahahahah)

What are your character's attitudes, habits and vices? Does he/she drink, smoke, do drugs, have sex, gamble, steal, etc? She likes everyone except halflings who she is convinced are the root of all evil in the world, she drinks to excess but doesn't really bother her and when she's had enough to loosen up she will sometimes hit on people though it is unclear whether she is mearly messing with them.

What are your character's fears, phobias and issues? Do you have unresolved childhood traumas?
No real problems apart from ramppent ego and a slight evil bad guy complex (if ever she starts cackling while stroking a new magic item and calling it precious then it is time that she take some of the little blue tablets in a jar in her backpack)

Where does your character call home? Why? Have there been previous "homes"? Is your character a wanderer? she is a wanderer by necessity rather then choice but she still thinks of her parents home in the mountains next to the lake as home

I did one on the D&D character sheet thread using the one before as a model (admittedly changed it so it fit with the book more...)

There's nothing wrong with Spell compendium itself, it's basically just a collection of spells published in the Complete series, Player's handbook and a handful of campaign specific books and parts of PHB2. Sure, there are a few new spells, but for most parts it simply gathers together a bunch of spells so that they are easy to find. On top of that, Cleric and Wizards get more new spells than Druids. Damn it!

yeah but some of the druid spells are quite tasty.

In fact with the groups I play with in Real life they are often too tasty hence the banning of natural casting as a feat (some of my friends are complete twinks about that)

Considering that Wizards can get most of them anyways and they have A LOT more utility spells, I wouldn't admire Druid's spell list that much. It is a very good base class though, one of the only ones actually worth taking all 20 levels.
