Worldbuilding Reorganization
« on: January 09, 2015, 03:05:52 AM »
I think as Taijitu becomes more active we need to do some reorganizing of the worldbuilding section. I don't think the Ecclesia needs to worry itself with this, especially since most members of the legislature don't write here on any sort of regular basis, so let's have an informal discussion here and come up with what to do, if anything.

This was my idea:

History section: This section would be devoted to RPs dedicated to explaining and elaborating on crucial pieces of nations' history, such as the "Origins of the Allied States" or "The Empire of Letonna".

Treaties and Conferences section: Self-explanatory. For threads like "Cefnor Conference" and "Novrith Conference".

International Incidents section: We don't have many of these now, but this area would be for diplomatic incidents, wars, and so on. I'd like to see this section have a pre-modern, for pre-1980, and modern, for post-1980, set of subforums.

Internal Incidents section: Like the International Incidents section, this would have pre-modern and modern sections. They would focus on internal turmoil within nations, i.e. the Delfos nuclear RP, or "The Noble Republic".

Character Stories section: This, like the previous two sections, would have pre-modern and modern sections. They would focus tightly on a set of characters set within the overarching world of Taijitu. For threads like "Household", "Succession", or Oz's "Second Wind".

Any input from other writers? Sections we could do without? Sections we should add? General suggestions?

Would we still be dividing RP's by chronological period? Or would we just make sure to date them in the topic? I always thought topic dating was sufficient.

"Character Stories" and "History" might due with better names like "Historical Records" or something, though other than that sorta meh suggestion I'm blanking right now.

You make a good point about title dating.

"Historical Records" sounds good to me. "Character Stories" could be called "Individuals and People" or something similar.

I suppose we could make a "Miscellaneous" section, now that I think of it, as well.

Is there anything we realistically expect that'll end up in Miscellaneous?

Wondered if we were going to go back to that old set up.

Also what about a National Statistics section?

YES! YES! YES!
I like the Historical Records suggestion and also Miscellaneous as a category.

certainly behind this.

Perhaps also something like celebrations/worlds fair as a category?

Creating a section for Character stories and renaming the pre-modern to history is fine, but I dislike separating "international incidents" to "internal incidents". Any incident can become international and labeling it "internal" makes it less susceptible to integrating other RPers.

I don't like the "International Incidents" system, let's not dumb ourselves down for the sake of some feederites who can't be bothered to understand what we really do in the worldbuilding section.

Then simply Incidents?  Or did you guys have something else in mind?

And if they occur in pre modern times though?  Hence Gulliver's suggestion to remove sections by time era and put the timeline in the topic of the thread.

The current format is the best choice in my opinion, why does it need changed?

adding a history section might be good, also including instructions on how to make a wiki and a link to the wiki, but other than that, don't change anything else.

I like the idea of splitting along these lines as I would personally find it useful. Categories spawn ideas.

Instructions on how to make a wiki are a good idea, I was also going to work up a writing guide in the Worldbuilding wiki.

Treaties and Incidents I suppose could all fall under a single category, really. What would the distinction be between those and "Character Stories" however? Would be one mainly of style, with Character Stories essentially being short stories, and the former being more traditional RP's? Of course, it's a very hazy boundary.

The one that seems clear to me is the History section, which of course would presumably be posts or links to Wiki articles written in the style of a history book rather than a narrative. Though, factbooks could potentially be written in the same way in some cases so there's overlap.

Ultimately it seems to me there's going to be some arbitrary calls involved, but I worry about there being too many sections. One option would be subsections if necessary.
