Another somewhat big update, could be reverted back to the old given whatever responses I get back for this one.
Oz, why is eluvatar/rykkovaa so weird looking now?Glad you asked, the original looked all nice and normal and connected right? Wrong. All maps are a 2d projection of a 3d sphere*, and there's no such thing as a perfect map. Certain maps have very good uses, such as mercator, which allows for very easy navigation (it wasn't conceived to be racist, no matter what some Galls-peters fan boy tells you). Taijitu so far has been and still is in equirectangular map projection, which means it makes very nice rectangles. Is this a good map projection? Far from it. at the very edges of the poles, the last pixel stretches about 0-5 kilometers across 7,200 pixels. And so that gives you an idea of how distorted that might look on a sphere for eluvatar/rykkovaa. Actually I can show you
here. How silly looking. Now when you project the object onto the sphere it looks more like
this, wow so much better, it looks like real land now.
Why is the antarctic land so much bigger nowBecause it used to look like an animal butt in 3d, no joke
Also part of the update I added the source files of the map (in photoshop format), and I included taijitu in mercator/robinson projections. You can play with the projections of taijitu's map by using
g-projector, a program developed by the ubernerds at NASA, it's pretty straightforward to use.
If there's enough hate, I'll revert it back and we can all be ignorant of 3d, fucking 3d, ruining our 2d representations of it.
* - I know it's an ellipsoid thing, shut up nerd
