Post by: St Oz on August 18, 2014, 06:48:12 PM
The map is at, www.map.taijitu.org
Rough draft of climate map that I'll eventually (maybe never) perfect, but it's still useful  (http://map.taijitu.org/taijituclimaterough.png)

Guidelines and whatever on asking for a spot

Inactive nations without established histories, culture, or stories in Taijitu Worldbuilding are liable to be removed from the map. Alternative Worldbuilding is also considered.

If it could be possible, I'd like my nation to be right around that curve to the east of Eluvatar. I don't really care about the shape.

Please and thank you.

That area where the Empire of Novmir borders Soverign Dixie to the west, the Northwest area of Novmir, and a little bit to the south of Soverign Dixie to create an interesting scenario.

Nation: The Imperium of Kalonia
Capital: Ninsk (West, on the Ocean)

I am still thinking about my country's history, but I would like my small country to be near the equator so I would have an easier time launching rockets into space. A coastal area would be good so I could be involved with naval activities. However, I don't want all of my country to be coastline. I want plenty of forest. Maybe it can be modelled after Belgium. It has both a coastline and the Ardennes forest. Or maybe it can be a forest island. What do you think?

Considering the climate is based on the earth, the kind of jungle you'd get at the equator would be a rainforest like the congo or amazon

I have a very active player and will be on multiple times every day.  I have a large nation and was hoping that I can have a nice large plot of land. I will also never expand if giving the land I am asking for.

The open land in the picture seems like a lot but I am sure it will become reasonable when I show how active I am. Hope this works out I can't wait to get back into some great role plays !

Requesting to be either:

Bordering St Oz and Letonna;  don't care how wide really as long as I'm coast to coast.

OR

Bordering Eluvatar; don't care how wide really as long as I'm coast to coast.

Thanks in advance, looking forward to getting back into this.  :drunks:

Was going to wait until my first storyline went up before I did this but, since Act 1 Scene 1 of that will be up this evening (it's written just needs some tweaking after work), I figured I might as well post.

Considering if you give Bustos their first choice underneath Oz/Letonna; I would like to share a border with Eluvatar with my nation about at least the same size as Eluvatar, with access to both coasts (possibly following close around the grid line). I'd also like to request those 4 islands just south of Eluvatar in Cefnor.

Let me know if there are any issues, and thanks! :)

Can't be coast to coast on either option as according to the rules temperate zones are enforced a bit more heavily than non-temperate zones. Also pick a definitive spot.

Your spot is a bit too big for the temperate zone too, do you want me to have you just border up into Eluvatar or would you rather have the islands?

Granted Oz's response wasn't informative to you or anybody else that would come along and read it, you should try to look for information yourself instead of asking it in a thread about the Map. The Planning Room (link) (http://forum.taijitu.org/planning-room) is a section to plan RPs, maybe you should make a topic there asking the Standard Operating Procedure, or you could try reading the World Building Guide to Taijitu RP in our wiki (link) (http://wiki.taijitu.org/wiki/Taijitu_worldbuilding).

Thanks!

Hello, I'm relatively new here and trying to get involved in the Worldbuilding RP. I'm already coming to the table with some writing and RP'ing experience, as well as a clear history for the nation that I'm claiming. If at all possible I would like to claim the shoreline directly to the east of Al'Khem as Abasha's land. If at all possible I would like my country to be in this shape: http://www.nationstates.net/nation=abasha/detail=factbook/id=183007

I personally don't care much about the shape or if it borders other countries, that's up to you and whatever is convenient.

Could you put La Llaruna Libre on the eastern coast Phoenixia, roughly southeast of Delfos, around the area where the desert and green lands meet, looking at the climate map? I'm not picky about size or shape, but the batch of hills would preferably be in the north and the desert to the south.

I would really appreciate it.

Hi, regarding the new geography chapter in my wiki (link) (http://wiki.taijitu.org/wiki/New_Delfos#GEOGRAPHY) I request a modification (next time you gotta add nations or modify), it's nice and all, you were saying my islands were too big, well I wanted Honto (my main island in Delphic bay) back but I'm trying to have smaller islands in the Archipelago, adding a 4th islands west. If you want, "Corvo", my 4th westernmost island, may be a bit smaller since it's to be similar to Corvo (link) (https://www.google.pt/maps/search/Corvo+A%C3%A7ores/@38.4858188,-26.4938159,901737m/data=!3m1!1e3?hl=pt-PT).

remade the north eastern continent to make it more tectonic-related to the rest of Taijitu.

Will match the climate map with it soon enough, but it's safe to say the northern part is mostly arid, and the south is mostly forest with an extensive mountain range at the center.

Island chain, http://prntscr.com/6ird7l, explained here. It has a similar geologic story to Indonesia.

The islands are also a tectonic funhouse of earthquakes and volcanoes because we need more of that. So tsunami warning to people near by it. Hope you all enjoy it.

Another somewhat big update, could be reverted back to the old given whatever responses I get back for this one.

Oz, why is eluvatar/rykkovaa so weird looking now?
Glad you asked, the original looked all nice and normal and connected right? Wrong. All maps are a 2d projection of a 3d sphere*, and there's no such thing as a perfect map. Certain maps have very good uses, such as mercator, which allows for very easy navigation (it wasn't conceived to be racist, no matter what some Galls-peters fan boy tells you). Taijitu so far has been and still is in equirectangular map projection, which means it makes very nice rectangles. Is this a good map projection? Far from it. at the very edges of the poles, the last pixel stretches about 0-5 kilometers across 7,200 pixels. And so that gives you an idea of how distorted that might look on a sphere for eluvatar/rykkovaa. Actually I can show you here (http://i.imgur.com/gSCPPEQ.png). How silly looking. Now when you project the object onto the sphere it looks more like this (http://i.imgur.com/JPJOWr4.png), wow so much better, it looks like real land now.

Why is the antarctic land so much bigger now
Because it used to look like an animal butt in 3d, no joke

Also part of the update I added the source files of the map (in photoshop format), and I included taijitu in mercator/robinson projections. You can play with the projections of taijitu's map by using g-projector (http://www.giss.nasa.gov/tools/gprojector/), a program developed by the ubernerds at NASA, it's pretty straightforward to use.

If there's enough hate, I'll revert it back and we can all be ignorant of 3d, fucking 3d, ruining our 2d representations of it.

On this one you can only compare with land on the same latitude. But it gives you the full picture

On this one you can compare to everything, but not so full picture towards the edges. But I don't think that's a problem since everyone seems to not be cut off.

Please keep in mind to retain the characteristics of: two major islands at the top and bottom, a long, thin island mass protecting its Western seaboard, two islands doing the same in the east, a scattering of medium to small islands in the middle, and a few islands by the topmost.

Thanks Oz

Possible Imperial Sobek Claim (http://puu.sh/i03fZ.png)

I am looking at this area for a possible location for my nation here. I know its a bit large so here is a general concept of what the nation is like.

Imperial Sobek is not as much a nation-state but a hegemony of regional warlords akin to the Mongol Empire where to be be named the Emperor/Khan you had to have the most support out of the local generals, clan chiefs and etc. It will have a large but stagnate economy with a moderate to low GDP per Capita and a rough population of ~25 to42 Million mostly focused around the southern coasts with the interior and North Coast largely uninhabited.

St.Oz - what is the distance represented by the squares on the map?  i.e. one square equals 100 miles or kms or whatevs...

St.Oz - what is the distance represented by the squares on the map?  i.e. one square equals 100 miles or kms or whatevs...

So. This is a complicated question to answer, and many other cartographers don't even bother learning about this and simply slap on that "one inch = 225 KM!" bullshit. This might work on very localized maps, but definitely not on fullworld map

A map is a 2d representation of a 3d object, there will never be a perfect map for some one pixel to X km sort of projection. It's just impossible. Unless you want some weird fugly map that bubbles out and such, but those are hardly helpful and distort things as well. You can see here how equidistant maps are incredibly unhelpful (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/ec/Azimuthal_equidistant_projection_SW.jpg/1024px-Azimuthal_equidistant_projection_SW.jpg)

The example I show there, is the visualization of a mercator projection. A line at angle θ travels through the sphere, which is the earth, and then reaches out and touches the paper. I may have positioned the paper out too far now that I think of it, it should be touching the circle, nonetheless, this is what's happening with distortion with a mercator map. It also perfectly explains why you cannot have a mercator map from 0-90 degrees or 0-89 degrees, and why you will often see mercator maps at 0-75 or 0-80.

Where am I getting at with this? The distance between the squares are degrees. Since it's equirectangular, all degrees are spread out the same as others. However the represenation of 15 degrees longitude at say 70 degrees latitude will be different than 15 degrees longitude at 0 degrees latitude.

Imagine your globe, all the lines meet at the top. The gap between them stretch out from where they meet to the maximum at the equator, then condense again at the other pole where they meet. Same concept for a basketball, the lines of a basketball max out at the halfway point, then minimize the gap at the poles.

Taijitu is equivalent to earth, well, not really.

This is where it gets really complicated. The earth isn't a perfect sphere, NASA has some complicated ellipsoid model of the earth, but since things are so complicated enough, I just use the simple spherical model of the earth.

The best way to knowing the distances, is seeing where this target piece of land is on the map, finding it's latitude position on the map, then comparing it with other earth countries or pieces of land on that same latitude. I also suggest downloading http://www.giss.nasa.gov/tools/gprojector/ gprojector, a program that lets you overlay the earth over images, such as say... taijitu. Save the taijitu image and load it up. It will help you see relative distances with it meshed up.

Hi there!

I was wondering if I could make a claim on the map as I am trying to formulate some information for the beginning of a factbook.  I was wondering if I could be placed on those two islands between Funkadelia and Osmarim. Our people are kind of an island people, roughly based on Polynesians with a bit of European thrown is for fun.  Should they not fit there, I'm pretty open to any tropical locale be it islands or continental.  The concept is able to be changed if needed.  If I am jumping the gun here, please let me know.  I don't want to step on toes or upset the order in which things are done here.

I would like to make a claim on the map if that is okay. Specifically a plot of land to the south west of the main landmass, specifically the section with the large island and some of the land on the opposing coast. (9 squares down, 15 from the left. Since in the factbook it says part of Feniquyar is an island I feel this block would be ideal. Thank you very much.

Hi, I'd like for my state to be placed on the map, preferably by the sea and by the equator. Thanks.

omg where's that hack-fraud Oz and why isn't he updating

Because I'm still in the process of moving, it might be a couple of weeks before I get to your map requests.

Sorry if this inconveniences anyone's worldbuilding, I promise it's not that much longer before I can regularly add people again.
